And it seems that the Scottish government will be bringing back their act before next year or did I mishear that?

FindTheTruth · 24/09/2020 12:07

Time stamp 11:03:30 - Kat Smith - in the republic of Ireland they've got a de-medicalised self determined system since 2015 and it's working

What do people in Ireland say?

I know what women in Canada are saying ...

How do they know if it’s working, since male bodied people who are trans, will be registered as women in Canada and Ireland. There are no problems to see in society, if you insist on blindfolding the public.
Winesalot · 24/09/2020 12:15

I do hope the inquiry into the medical treatment for minors is well informed from all sides and includes some comprehensive studies that were once deemed phobic. For instance, surely they will have to even do a portion of follow through reporting to pick up the rate of detransition.

The GEO was asked who was seen prior to the GRA consultation and said they didn't have that information - they could only supply a list of everyone they met before, during and after. There are some women's groups that I recognise on there, but for all we know, they could have been seen AFTER the consultation went out.

FindTheTruth · 24/09/2020 12:20

yes. immediately thought of James Caspian, who has 9 days on CJ to fund his challenge in the European Court of Human Rights - he's challenging Bath Spa University’s refusal to allow him to research people who reverse gender reassignment, fundamentally on the basis that it might attract unpleasant comments on social media

happydappy2 · 24/09/2020 12:21

Why is no one asking the question-why are we giving male bodied people legal recognition as women????

Why not give them the status of trans women?

This situation just can't continue imho.

Winesalot · 24/09/2020 12:21

Yes. His included!

I'm just watching - she mentioned single sex space and biological sex in the same sentence - woo hoo!! and treatment appropriate to under 18's decision making capability - v. promising. I'll carry on watching :¬)

gardenbird48 · 24/09/2020 12:35

CB actually came out and said that his 'comprehensive paper' was quietly given to the government and has been ignored!!!

He is so patronising to Liz and so focused on this that he is trying to make this a number 1 priority - tabling an emergency question and it is not even clear what he is asking for!

CornedBeef451 · 24/09/2020 12:35

I haven't got very far as I keep getting too angry about the stupid questions!

HerewardTheWoke · 24/09/2020 12:42

Wow. This was an exercise in (mostly gay) men and some women complaining that the government hasn't ridden roughshod over women's human rights. It's genuinely shocking and worrying there is so little Parliamentary support for women's rights.

Alarmingly, judging by many of the interventions, this issue is not going away. Women are going to have to be eternally vigilant in defending our rights.

yourhairiswinterfire · 24/09/2020 12:53

Women and women's groups were open and said everything that needed to be said in public, for anyone to see.

The fact that these slime ball men tried giving our rights away to men in private meeting(s) tells us everything we need to know.

a) We can't trust them as far as we can throw them b) they know fine well the majority of the public doesn't support this.

Learn what NO means, you petulant, arrogant, entitled brats.

merrymouse · 24/09/2020 12:54

It's interesting that they never seem to mention Canada when they talk about countries where Self ID is successful. Why always Ireland (population 5 million) and Argentina? (A country with a less that enviable human rights record, so really impossible to say whether women's rights are affected).

Is it because there is quite a lot of evidence that women's rights have been compromised in Canada?

yourhairiswinterfire · 24/09/2020 12:57

I'm just watching - she mentioned single sex space and biological sex in the same sentence - woo hoo!!

I'm waiting for the meltdowns claiming that Liz Truss has been radicalized by us nasty terfs, what with her using disgusting transphobic dog whistles such as 'biological sex' and everything Grin

OvaHere · 24/09/2020 13:02

A year or two back I had a long conversation with an online friend from Argentina, a staunchly feminist woman. I was explaining the current situation with her and all the grassroots orgs that had emerged to fight it.

She had no idea about any of it and was adamant it wasn't a 'thing' in Argentina. We've lost contact now but I sometimes wonder whether it's become more apparent over time.

I think it's correct in that countries that don't have much equality in the first place it goes unnoticed because I don't think self ID in those countries is serving the same purpose (for the proponents) as here or Canada for example.

merrymouse · 24/09/2020 13:02

CB actually came out and said that his 'comprehensive paper' was quietly given to the government and has been ignored!!!

Except it wasn't a comprehsive paper.

The reason for the 2004 act was to protect privacy. Somewhere along the line people started to believe that there is a human right to have identity affirmed, but that is none of the government's business.

334bu · 24/09/2020 13:07

Very worrying statement by SNP woman regarding timeline for GRA Scotland Reform.

IloveJKRowling · 24/09/2020 13:08

these people have proven that they have zero respect for women, our boundaries, privacy, or experiences, and haven't even given the safety of children a second thought. That they keep ignoring what women have said is disturbing.

This. Good for Liz. She's really standing up for women and children, and I'm paying attention.

Whilst I think the Tories handling of coronavirus has been dire, I have no confidence that a party that doesn't know what biological sex is, nor (seemingly) that women and girls suffer harm and are discriminated against because of it, would do any better.

gardenbird48 · 24/09/2020 13:09

I've just finished viewing. Was that normal or was it the parliamentary equivalent of a 'pile-on' (sorry horrid term)

Big up to Felicity Buchan and Jackie Doyle-Price for recognising that trans rights do not exist in a vacuum - something that all other MPs speaking clearly didn't understand.

Specific clarification on the single sex protections from Jackie was very welcome and I remain utterly gob smacked at the hideous attitude of some of the speakers - particularly the one who accused her of leaks and whipping up hatred (and R-M who managed to spit out the conventional parliamentary pleasantries through gritted teeth and CB who was unutterably vile and condescending throughout).

I thought Liz did very well through the whole thing (shame she couldn't correct the suicide stats but I don't think she can in that forum?) - and I am still unclear from those questions exactly why the trans community feel so horribly let down and disappointed...

How can anyone embark on such a major life journey without any medical diagnosis - it clearly requires medical treatment so surely it has to be diagnosed? and if it doesn't require medical treatment, then what is it?

FindTheTruth · 24/09/2020 13:14

good summary @gardenbird48 and thanks for the names Star. Mr Speaker I could hear all the mens names but I couldn't hear all the women's names, even replaying several times. maybe it's just me.

@334bu

Very worrying statement by SNP woman regarding timeline for GRA Scotland Reform.
indeed - and she seemed to be hinting that it might allow people to go over the border to obtain a GRC? or did I hear that wrong? She also mentioned that she has received letters from distressed people all over the UK - why are people writing to her and not their actual MPs? I didn't think MPs were allowed to deal with issues that are not in their consitituency - she is not even in their country.

'the Gender Recognition Panel takes applications from across the UK and the Scottish Government will obviously listen carefully to what she has said and what it means for Scotland and she consider co operating with the Scottish Government?'
