I'd forgotten how brilliant (and depressing) the opening chapter is - an absolute evisceration of Norman Mailer as "great American novelist", laying out all his misogyny. It's a very upsetting read.

BTW I am still waiting for the Leeds-specific lockdown announcement details, @Quaagars - Tuesday's nearly over now and the council have still said nowt...

Lol, at the time of my comment you're referring to it was looking likely that Leeds was going into lockdown (had been said that West Yorkshire was going to get even tighter restrictions) so I just said that maybe that was due to more police presence and not wanting protests congregating.

Fellow oldie here, love a bit of skunk anansie! Fabulous band, fond memories of listening to them (and Chumbawumba "I get knocked down") while making trade union banners in preparation for a strike!

Brilliant report fishdoggy about wonderful women taking their right to protest seriously. West Yorkshire Police on the other hand are downright disgusting. Bloody jumped up bullies going well being their remit. Hope they can be made accountable.

What strikes me most is how bloody weird it is that all these police were waiting to mobilise, arrest and disperse a small handful of clearly polite, organised peaceful protesters. Does this ever happen with other groups? If I notified my local police that I was having a tiny political protest, would this happen?

I kind of think it would be interesting to test it out with other political causes. And other amounts of women. Can one woman stand in Leeds square and discuss women's rights? What is a woman allowed to talk about in Leeds? Is there a list of disallowed political groups or subjects which aren't political?
