The awful trend on Twitter

Hi, I don't post often, but I've seen the awful twitter trend today in regard to J K Rowling, I just feel so scared and defeated about women's rights, why are more people not up in arms and defending us? I also fear for her and women's safety, as some of these TRA's seem really unhinged.

@KettlePolly

It's Twitter - Twitter is the new Tumblr - it really doesn't count as reasonable discourse - it's just drunk teenagers.
They definitely act as such but there are plenty of adults, particularly in publishing and journalism, taking part in this. Sad
Torvean32 · 14/09/2020 22:58

I dont think JKR gives a crap about these twitter twats.
The publicity for her new book is great though.

nettie434 · 14/09/2020 23:04

@PopperUppleton

But but but Val McDermid wrote about this particular story line/plot device in 1995 and she's actually a lesbian, ie actually part of the community...
It's also a plot in novels by PD James & Ruth Rendell but I guess 'derivative' wouldn't generate the same amount of click bait for Pink News or Twitter outrage.
fatblackcatspaw · 14/09/2020 23:42

@IHateCoronavirus

There is too much hate against JKR at the moment. DP and I did “free” Harry Potter walking tour of Edinburgh recently and we were horrified to hear the guide criticising her for being “mad” and writing about her “unreasonable opinions!”. These people make a living out of what she had written, they announced to distance themselves from her they would be donating a percentage of their profits to a Scottish transgender charity! We were completely agog, but the other couples (possibly mid to late 20s) were all nodding along with him!
hummm thats bloody outrageous... if its who I think it is (Edinburgh is a VERY small place) they have made a very good living off the back of JKR
fatblackcatspaw · 14/09/2020 23:47

I've just ordered the book - I was going to wait to get it for winter reading but helping it push it up the best seller charts is obviously the feminist thing to do.

nepeta · 14/09/2020 23:49

I looked at the hashtag, and it's not quite as terrible as I expected (though terrible enough). There are sane voices, too. Maybe we should add to them?

Melroses · 14/09/2020 23:54

I think the reason it is not so terrible is that sane voices have already added to it. It was pretty well horrible earlier on today.

fatblackcatspaw · 14/09/2020 23:56

yeah loads of good people speaking out... but I get that its exhausting... I'm off to read my cormoran strike novel...

SinisterBumFacedCat · 14/09/2020 23:59

Twitter really is a cesspit. When did it become ok to wish death on someone because you disagree with their views?

DeRigueurMortis · 15/09/2020 00:05

And as if by magic the new Strike book has downloaded to my Kindle.

I should be in bed but I'm going to enjoy a couple of chapters first because I can't wait 😊.

Just be cautious about doing that; a while back there was a meme that was a death threat and Twitter was deleting all accounts that posted it, even the victims who had been sent the meme and were posting it to say its not ok.
HopeClearwater · 15/09/2020 00:42

Neville ‘I support sex workers and LGBT people’ Southall has now weighed in on it with a sex-based insult (‘wicked witch’) about JKR. Why do these woke types even bother to include the L in the LGBT abbreviation any more when they’re so plainly misogynistic?

(Neville Southall is an ex-Everton goalie who had affairs throughout his eighteen-year marriage to his first wife. It feels relevant.)

Escapeplanning · 15/09/2020 00:56

She certainly knows how to get them to show their selves 😂

Worrysaboutalot · 15/09/2020 05:45

I have bought the earlier Strike books and I will buy this new one too. I do so to support JKR, I don't even read whodunit books in general and haven't got around to reading any of these Strike books I have already bought to date.

But this thread is encouraging me to at least read the first novel (which makes sense to actually read the books I have already bought!)

I hadn't realised Robbie Coltrane had spoken out on this. I guess men are allowed to have opinions. Who knew? Apparently, he said:

“I don’t think what she said was offensive really. I don’t know why but there’s a whole Twitter generation of people who hang around waiting to be offended. They wouldn’t have won the war, would they?”

He acknowledged that he may come across as a “grumpy old man” but said that he had little time for people online who took offence. “Oh, get over yourself. Wise up, stand up straight and carry on,” Coltrane, 70, said.

imhereforthesanity · 15/09/2020 06:19

@Melroses that's good to hear, maybe I'll have another look today. Twitter really is the worst or the worst.

Ghouliet · 15/09/2020 06:29

I saw the I stand by JKRolling [sic] hashtag before the Rip one and what struck me was the posts with the spelling error were all TRAs crowing to each other and how supporters of JKRowling can’t spell. All inside their own echo chamber.

The RIP hashtag was particularly disgusting. It’s disgraceful how that level of misogyny and hate is allowed to stand on twitter.

ukgift2016 · 15/09/2020 06:30

I am ordering JK book just to piss off the anti women brigade.

I usually buy books second hand so this is big for me.

RuffleCrow · 15/09/2020 06:39

I doubt there are really thousands tweeting this. Thousands of anime sock puppets, maybe. She'll weather this shitstorm with her usual poise and grace and carry on letting the sick bastards show themselves for who they really are. They're basically modern day religious reactionaries issuing a fatwa.

Cross dressing is one of the most common paraphilias found in serial killers.

FannyCann · 15/09/2020 06:47

Is it bad that I amused myself last night by posting a gif of I ❤️ JK Rowling under a whole lot of the vicious tweets and those that responded I posted another gif of a woman rolling in a huge pile of dollar bills.

Childish I know but there it is.
Will order that book for my holiday coming up.
