The awful trend on Twitter

Hi, I don't post often, but I've seen the awful twitter trend today in regard to J K Rowling, I just feel so scared and defeated about women's rights, why are more people not up in arms and defending us? I also fear for her and women's safety, as some of these TRA's seem really unhinged.

Have none of these people seen or read Silence of the Lambs? Perhaps they should have a reading list.

The Guardian reviewer doesn't seem to have found anything offensive in the book.

Scotland section of the Times is talking about it:

Uh oh! The American branch will be tantruming again.

There’s nothing like unhinged, badly spelt, spittle flecked invective wishing death on much loved, famously philanthropic authors for really convincing people how right you are Grin

Crack on, you anime profiled warriors of truth and righteousness. I’m sure it’s just some vile right wing conspiracy that JKRs books keep on selling in their millions, and if you just find the right way to call her a witch and get her burned at the stake, you’ll convince the woman in the street to stop buying them...

That Vanity Fair article that tweet advertises is a truly nasty piece of writing.

It made me think how there is an equivalent of TERF on the other side, and it is having much more effect. It would be Female Exclusive Trans Activism or FETA, i.e., articles like this one
news.yahoo.com/ice-nurse-revealed-georgia-detention-215816246.html
where women are altogether erased. All the uterus-haver, menstruator, and so on pieces are part and parcel of the same very successful trend. The word 'woman' is now a banned word if there is any chance at all that it might refer to biological sex.

In my view that is what JK Rowling's tweets were about, but they are not taken that way.

FuriousAndFrustrated · 15/09/2020 08:04

I just went on to Amazon to look for the Kindle version of the new book, and was surprised that it wasn't on the first page, being freshly released today.

So I narrowed the search down to "Hotly Anticipated : Crime, Thriller & Mystery : Last 30 days" and still it didn't appear.

I bought the first 4 Strike books recently (holiday reading) and yet the new one doesn't show up in "Top picks for you," "Inspired by Your Browsing History," or "Based on your reading".

Seems very odd.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 15/09/2020 08:07

Trans women already use women's facilities, they have to in order to get GRA Ah yes! That little gem!

Man MUST use women's facilities BEFORE he can get a piece of paper that says he is indeed a woman.

Women - shut the fuck up!

Maybe we should compile a list of authors, starting with some Ancient Greeks, who have used the same storyline! Tweet that all over the Twttersphere!

minsmum · 15/09/2020 08:20

I have just looked in Amazon best sellers list number 4 for printed books, number 3 for kindle books number 2 for audible

We’re in for a busy autumn translating Shakespeare from English to Wokeish, rewriting all the plot lines where women dress up as men (obviously played in the original by men dressing up as women, dressing up as men) to be more reflective of their non binary identities. It’s career making stuff Grin

Sophocles you have a wonderful way with words 😂

SerenityNowwwww · 15/09/2020 08:36

Well Robbie Coltrane has dipped his toe in the water (but at least honest enough to say that he didn’t want to dive in because of all the ‘shit’ that would be stirred up if he did). Phew- I thought he would be full on.

I’m thinking silence of the lambs, val mcdiarmid, PD James.

All had a character that dressed as a woman and was also a killer. In the latter example (think was devices and desires) the murderer dressed as a woman specifically to trap the victim.

It’s hardly a new device in Crime fiction. Why go after jkr?

Awww thanks! 😊
SerenityNowwwww · 15/09/2020 08:39

There was a man recently who purposely disguised himself in a dress, heels and a long wig specifically to attack women.

He was caught and convicted. So we can’t refer to it?

ThePankhurstConnection · 15/09/2020 09:01

@Kantastic

Oh come on, seriously? TRAs got mad about a story where a man crossdresses to kill a woman, so they responded to it by... sending a woman death threats?

Some very stable geniuses we've got here clearly. Let's hope they don't reach critical mass.

This amused me amid the grim reading and misrepresentation about all this.

Personally I was thrilled to get my pre-ordered copy downloaded. Very much looking forward to actually reading it (rather than criticising something I haven't read at all.)

The twitter response is like a particularly stupid herd of misogynistic sheep "literally baaaaaaaaaaaad JKR". The posts on there have made grim reading this morning - which is why I stopped reading them, they don't deserve the attention. They are ill thought out, bog standard misogyny from people who have no idea what they are talking about because they haven't even read the book.

Still they seem very upset over a male character dressed as a woman make of that what you will Hmm

The same happened with the John Boyle book about the boy with a trans sibling. Apparently the book is about 800 pages and is only published today so at this stage the only people that can have read it are those with review copies or who worked on the book's publication.

Nick Cohen, who has read the book, says it isn't transphobic but is feminist. Tweet is a plot teaser, rather than a spoiler I think but beware if you prefer to avoid any hints:

Just bought the hardback (cheaper than Kindle, WTAF?)

And I've supported the Centre for Women's Justice in so doing.

Thanks for the reminder.

RoyalCorgi · 15/09/2020 09:38

I would hazard:

a) They're very very very stupid.
b) They hate women.
c) Both of the above.

Malahaha · 15/09/2020 09:40

Just checked the book's Amazon Kindle page: it's number 3 in the all-round Kindle charts, at THAT PRICE!
This is tremendous. She's already made millions from it even before publication day.
I know authors who made millions (or at least hundred thousands) with Kindle books priced at £1.99 ranked in the top 100.

And that's just Kindle. The hardback is ranked at number 4 in Amazon. Let alone selling like hot cakes in Waterstones, WH Smith etc.
Oh yes, I'm sure she is close to ruin! Wink

Nice to see the patronising he/himmer (thanks to the twitter poster for that term!) in the replies going "blah blah lived experiences" getting his arse handed to him.

It's not even new in the real world lets face it. I thought writers commonly used incidents from reality as inspiration.
