Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Extinction Rebellion says TWAW, no debate.

So disappointed to see this on FB and Twitter today, issued by Extinction Rebellion UK.
What science is it we're meant to be following?
Which truth are we telling again?
I really thought they'd do better than this.
Until this afternoon mods appeared to be deleting comments questioning the statement, but this evening some dissenting voices have been left to stand, at least for now.
Infuriating.

📢📣🌈 TRANS PRIDE 🌈📣📢

Extinction Rebellion offers our unconditional support and solidarity to all trans people in the face of unrelenting attacks from Trans-Exclusionary-Radical-Feminists, the media, elected politicians, and even from leading voices within the environmental movement.

We do not believe that the existence of trans people, or the clearly documented oppression and abuse they experience is a topic that should be up for debate.

Trans women are women.
Trans men are men.
Non-binary and all other gender expressions which do not conform to the gender that person is assigned at birth are valid, legitimate, and true.
This is not up for debate.

Ultimately, transphobic rhetoric legitimises both structural and personal violence against trans people.

We state loudly and clearly: Trans liberation is intrinsic and inseparable from the liberation of all of humanity. Trans comrades are at the front and centre of our struggles, and long may they remain so.

Take action on July 4th
Meghan Murphy has a very interesting interview with M K Fain, who was a radical animal rights activist. Gender ideology first came to her notice when she was told that she couldn't refer to female animals. By her account, animal-rights activists (in USA) became far more interested in transgenderism than with animals. She went on to create Spinster:
That's very interesting. Thanks for posting this, the treatment of animals seems to be getting worse. Another grim sign of the times.

@Dicotyledon

Those are the nuts who thought a good way to support nature is by digging up grass?
I had forgotten about that. What kind of environmentalist tips up grass? They truly are clowns.
ThinEndoftheWedge · 29/06/2020 08:37

Notice that TERFs are listed first in the “unrelenting attackers” chart. How many assaults and murders of trans people have been carried out by women again? Can someone remind me please?

Indeed - how many terfs have been shouting ‘suck my girldick’ - is it because terfs don’t have dicks?

I wonder why that is?

Sushiroller · 29/06/2020 08:37

Trans-Exclusionary-Radical-Feminists
Do they think writing it in full means it's not an offensive slur???
😂😂😂

I'd love to know what Emma Thompson thinks about this!

Sushiroller · 29/06/2020 08:40

Oh turns out she's fine with it.

Does anyone remember Swampy in the late eighties /nineties who was trying to stop the trees being taken down to make way for urbanisation?

Wasn't it a bypass he was protesting about? I remember there was a follow up story on him maybe ten years ago, but I can't remember what it said now.

BaronessBrighterThanYou · 29/06/2020 08:44

Who are the people "in charge" at ER?

You know, the ones that put out his statement?

I wasn't aware they were organised and had a leader or committee or whatever..

I’ve just googled and he is one of the Extinction Rebellion protestors would you believe. Well there you go. My life has completed its full circle and I can happily die now Grin

DD was unimpressed by their posturing and vandalism a few months ago, and wryly commented on being impeded in getting into the engineering department.... for a lecture on sustainable engineering.

CockCarousel · 29/06/2020 08:53

And on one day this self absorbed exhibitionism totally drowned out a demo by women from the Afro-Caribbean community demonstrating against knife crime. Many of whose children are under threat of arrest just for walking down the street

And in my area, XR have attempted to hijack the BLM protests on SM. It's all over their page as if they were the people who organised it. The one member of XR that I know actually has some very (casually) racist views.

Destroyedpeople · 29/06/2020 08:57

One of the two ER people that I have come across has been sectioned at least twice. Not that I would hold that against someone but it does make you wonder.....
He was always trying to spike people with acid or persuade them to do DMT with him. Whatever that is. I thought I was an old druggy but will give that one a miss. ..

Selfraising · 29/06/2020 08:59

I find this pretty depressing. Obviously, that they supposedly think TWAW (does anyone in the world actually believe this??), that they have said it, their wording (front and centre, no debate, baseless accusations of abuse from feminists, etc). Not surprising, as many have said. But still depressing.

I also find the responses on here pretty depressing though. XR have obviously got the tone wrong a few times and yes, there is a lot of valid criticism re being white, middle class, etc. But from what I've seen, XR are aware of this, and are trying to find ways to remedy it.

But we are destroying the planet. And no meaningful action is being taken to stop it. What are we supposed to do?? Women and girls are the ones who are being affected first and affected most strongly. Climate collapse is a very real and very urgent issue. XR played a huge role in bringing the issue of climate destruction to the mainstream.

Why did they have to make any kind of announcement about it? Seems insane when, a pp commented, they don't even outright promote veganism.

I'm really upset by it too, OP. Off to look into deep green resistance!

Floisme · 29/06/2020 09:06

Stating 'transwomen are women' and 'this is not up for debate' is not getting the tone wrong. It is totalitarian nonsense. It is also the opposite of science, which is pretty worrying - but also, I think, rather comical - when it comes from an environmental group.

Yes. It's the #no debate slogan which is clear a warning sign that straight ahead lies authoritarian bigotry.

Onestepup · 29/06/2020 09:14

Trans women are not women.
Trans men are not men.
Sex is observed at birth not assigned.
This is scientific fact.

I absolutely agree. When I said 'got the tone wrong' I was talking about the comments earlier in the thread where people have criticised XR for their previous actions (blocking roads, drowning out other protests, gluing themselves to trains). Not about them saying TWAW.
Selfraising · 29/06/2020 09:48

I've had a look at the FB post. Spotted this gem in the comments:

"In my experience The group that does the most physical harm to women are other women."

Hmm
Needmoresleep · 29/06/2020 09:48

The plastic litter left after their protests was appalling.

I worry that it is the same people/money latching onto causes that people genuinely care about: environment, race equality, gay rights etc and then pumping us with their priorities, including queer theory.

ErrolTheDragon · 29/06/2020 09:58

"In my experience The group that does the most physical harm to women are other women."

Was that by any chance said by someone with very few years yet (if any) of being a woman?

Selfraising · 29/06/2020 10:08

Ah. I just looked. It was said by a woman who says she is a "proud partner of a fabulous trans woman". That's sad.
stillathing · 29/06/2020 10:10

There is not mass public support for TWAW. Is it not really dangerous for organisations such as ER and BLM to start centring TWAW as a message? Doesn't it risk undermining the extremely important cause both of those organisations carry?

BaronessBrighterThanYou · 29/06/2020 10:15

I await with trepidation to see what the Countryside Alliance have to say on the matter..and the RSPCA..

WeetabixBananaHipsterFFS · 29/06/2020 10:32

Does anyone remember Swampy in the late eighties /nineties who was trying to stop the trees being taken down to make way for urbanisation?

It was the mid-90s.

He was nothing like today’s XR activists.

DickKerrLadies · 29/06/2020 10:36

Ah. I just looked. It was said by a woman who says she is a "proud partner of a fabulous trans woman". That's sad.

So by 'women' she means 'women and transwomen'? I'm surprised it's not considered transphobic to assume transwomen are causing physical harm to other women.

Or is it that when they say that women are doing bad things, they're not including TW in that definition of women?
