So disappointed to see this on FB and Twitter today, issued by Extinction Rebellion UK.
What science is it we're meant to be following?
Which truth are we telling again?
I really thought they'd do better than this.
Until this afternoon mods appeared to be deleting comments questioning the statement, but this evening some dissenting voices have been left to stand, at least for now.
Infuriating.

📢📣🌈 TRANS PRIDE 🌈📣📢

Extinction Rebellion offers our unconditional support and solidarity to all trans people in the face of unrelenting attacks from Trans-Exclusionary-Radical-Feminists, the media, elected politicians, and even from leading voices within the environmental movement.

We do not believe that the existence of trans people, or the clearly documented oppression and abuse they experience is a topic that should be up for debate.

Trans women are women.
Trans men are men.
Non-binary and all other gender expressions which do not conform to the gender that person is assigned at birth are valid, legitimate, and true.
This is not up for debate.

Ultimately, transphobic rhetoric legitimises both structural and personal violence against trans people.

We state loudly and clearly: Trans liberation is intrinsic and inseparable from the liberation of all of humanity. Trans comrades are at the front and centre of our struggles, and long may they remain so.

Take action on July 4th

Politicians and organisations give in because they don’t want trouble

It's interesting, isn't it? How much power the Robespierre faction wield. While claiming to have none.

Thinkingabout1t · 29/06/2020 07:18

Notice that TERFs are listed first in the “unrelenting attackers” chart. How many assaults and murders of trans people have been carried out by women again?

Very bad news that XR are publishing outright lies contained in other people’s propaganda. It detracts from the environmental message. But it’s encouraging that “leading voices within the environmental movement” have spoken out for women. I must find out who they are and support them.

wrongsideofhistorymyarse · 29/06/2020 07:30

@DeRigueurMortis

As a side note, can anyone educate me on the green credentials of the Big Pharma companies that sell puberty blockers and cross sex hormones to the NHS?
Come the revolution, sister, they'll be manufactured by self-sufficient vegan cooperatives led by our glorious trans siblings!
TirisfalPumpkin · 29/06/2020 07:39

XR seem to be rapidly becoming irrelevant. Happens a lot when a campaign group can’t stay single-issue because too many enormous egos involved.

12boo · 29/06/2020 07:40

Not surprised, they're just another group of "liberal" anarchists

Packingsoapandwater · 29/06/2020 07:56

My experience is that XR have made it even more difficult to achieve small scale environmental changes on a local level.

I'm a fairly committed environmentalist, and do a lot of work on a local level to support biodiversity, traffic reduction, soil quality, plastic use reduction and open air spaces, but groups like XR have damaged the "brand" of environmentalism so much, that I now refer to "improving wellbeing" as my overarching objective.

XR does nothing to actually improve things on the ground, nor does it facilitate public buy-in. People now think of environmentalists, and environmentalism, as practitioners of an obsessive agitation ideology where the disruption to other people's lives is of no concern.

I really despair sometimes. These groups just wreck practical grassroots movements for change. And we are the people who do the bloody work.

AppleJane · 29/06/2020 07:59

From XR FAQ:

What does XR think about 5g, veganism, nuclear power, smart meters and so on?

Many people within XR will have strong views on all of the above and we want to welcome a variety of views, rather than adopting positions on controversial topics.

Hypocrites. And how the hell can you protest on environmental issues and not advocate veganism when animal agriculture is a leading cause? They’re not worthy.

WarmthAndDepth · 29/06/2020 08:00

So just checked Twitter again. There appears to be two XR accounts representing XR nationally, and this was posted on the much smaller group. The main account carries no mention of it.
Right.

So Extinction Rebellion are science deniers?
I am neither surprised nor disappointed, but I admit I'm amused.
Wasn't one of their founders a farmer?

Kit19 · 29/06/2020 08:09

honestly id only be less surprised if the youth wing of the lib dems tweeted TW are not women :D . i never thought they'd think anything different

only climate science is real apparently, all the other science is made up by THE MAN to oppress people

OhHolyJesus · 29/06/2020 08:11

Insanity - but as ever there are GC thinkers in XR. Sadly they too are silenced by stuff like this.

LittleCabbage · 29/06/2020 08:11

This is not up for debate

Everything is up for debate. We do not live in a dictatorship!

SuperJan · 29/06/2020 08:11

Anyone going "Well, I was against climate change wiping out whole species, including possibly humanity.. but I think that stopping getting a Gender Recognition Certificate a bit easier is far more important" needs to examine their soul.

BaronessBrighterThanYou · 29/06/2020 08:12

Are they on the-glue-that-they-use-to-stick-themselves-to-stuff?

Freespeecher · 29/06/2020 08:16

XR and BLM seem to have interests in common (among their top brass at least).

BLM UK recently had a "Free Palestine" tweet:

twitter.com/ukblm/status/1277177624884850689?s=20

and one of XR's founders, Roger Hallam, had to step down last year after referring to the Holocaust as "just another fuckery in human history".

www.theguardian.com/environment/2019/nov/20/extinction-rebellion-founders-holocaust-remarks-spark-fury

I doubt the average BLM / XR protester knows or cares about either but I think it's enough to raise concerns about the ains of the top tier of both movements.

Lordamighty · 29/06/2020 08:19

Biology deniers.

Alltheprettyseahorses · 29/06/2020 08:20

@SuperJan

Anyone going "Well, I was against climate change wiping out whole species, including possibly humanity.. but I think that stopping getting a Gender Recognition Certificate a bit easier is far more important" needs to examine their soul.
If XR thinks males getting access to women's toilets is so important, they need to examine their ... No, it's ridiculous, I don't believe in souls. They need to examine their ethics. Women matter. We're not here to be trampled over to satisfy every male whim while being told we can't object because it's not nice if we do. XR needs better priorities because this is just another 'after the (MRA) revolution love' and it doesn't wash with me.
Wanderings · 29/06/2020 08:22

Will they wear masks for their next silly stunt, especially if they’re on public transport? When they glue themselves to stuff, will they be 2m apart?

IStandByJKR · 29/06/2020 08:22

They were active, gathering and defying lockdown spreading their germs in Cambridge during lockdown, which pissed me off.

I won't link to the daily fail website but there's a photo of the lawn they dug up there with a rainbow flag, and comments from a blue haired person so I guess the signs were there.

Climate change IS an emergency and we really, really, REALLY need urgent action on it, but XR gets very little sympathy from me. Even less so after this anti-woman statement.

justanotherneighinparadise · 29/06/2020 08:23

These are the people that rolled down the road of my local town with the police idly following them about trying to stop them getting run over 🙄

Ringsender2 · 29/06/2020 08:23

@Freespeecher the reference to Palestine might be because the Israeli government is planning to annexe part of the West Bank which currently has illegal settlements on it. It's a US-brokered but internationally condemned plan. Not central to BLM, though, you're correct.

Thinkingabout1t · 29/06/2020 08:26

Thanks for the link, StumbledIn.
A new political party was launched in London on Thursday by a group of activists from Extinction Rebellion, who marked the event by shoplifting a haul of supermarket goods to highlight the instability of global food distribution.

I’ve noticed how many middle-class people seem quite relaxed about their kids shoplifting, even about doing it themselves when younger. I was brought up (working class) to believe thieving was seriously wrong, like lying — not just a bit mischievous. But I suppose middle-class thieves are much less likely to be arrested or jailed.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 29/06/2020 08:27

These are the protestors who blocked roads and bridges and held up ambulances and people trying to get to hospitals for medical treatment or to visit critically ill relatives? People who stopped commuters getting to work and put jobs at risk? I have very little time for them. Campaign the hard way, with reasoned arguments, letters to MPs and so on. In the long run no change forced through without convincing people that it's the right thing to do will last. I hope so, anyway.

Hulo · 29/06/2020 08:28

No surprise. We know how weak their analysis on class and race is. Remember when they likened the protestors stopping the train at Canning Town to Rosa Parks and that didn't impress many in the Black community. It can only be expected that their analysis round sex is poor too

justanotherneighinparadise · 29/06/2020 08:31

Does anyone remember Swampy in the late eighties /nineties who was trying to stop the trees being taken down to make way for urbanisation? I’m guessing they’re the modern version of that. Wonder what happened to him? 🤔
