Never posted on this board before, but nervous, but I’m furious.
Just bought some towels from Superdrug and the first line on the back of the packet is ‘A person who menstruates..’ I’m a woman ffs!
I shop in Superdrug all the time for their cruelty free stuff but no more!

But bear in mind that someone who faces exclusion you could never comprehend

You think women don’t know what it is to be excluded? Have you just woken up from a lifelong coma? Jesus.

Deliriumoftheendless · 01/09/2020 18:36

Women, girls and trans-menstruators. Covers NBs as they’re under the trans umbrella and offends no one, now does it?

Winesalot · 01/09/2020 18:40

I am so lost as to why you are offended.

.... at least they did say 'menstruator' which includes some female animals as well. I guess that might make it even more inclusive though.

It is dehumanising to be described by a biological function when the term 'women' or 'female' can be used instead. Remember, we are being told that no transperson is denying their biology. So therefore, female should cover it or 'women, transmen and non-binary people'.

No need to dehumanise 51% of the population who have periods, have had periods, or the potential to have periods unless for a medical reason do not.

CallarMorvern · 01/09/2020 18:41

Ah bummer, I've just bought Luna, because I couldn't get Bodyform sensitive.

DRH90 · 01/09/2020 18:43

I am so saddened to see this much nastiness and exclusion in a forum for mums. Please bear in mind that your children may not now or in the future identify with the sex they were assigned to at birth, and that they deserve to feel that their existence isn't ridiculed.
Being trans is recognised scientifically, it is only rejected by the ignorant.

So many feminists have been campaigning for years to ensure women who do not menstruate are not made to feel any less of a woman for not doing so. Your ignorance to that and your decision to only bring now is an attempt to distract from the discussion at hand.

As for to person wanting to correct it to 'Women and people who menstruate'... you know women are people right? 'People' already includes you.

This is another one of those situations that really boils down the the age old 'Be Kind' mantra. The text on the back of that box just made someone feel like they aren't a freak, someone feel like they belong, someone feel like they have a place in a world that constantly rejects their existence because it doesn't conform to a system that was never natural or logical. If it doesn't affect you but can help someone else then why on earth would you take issue with it?

Winesalot · 01/09/2020 18:52

It has everything to do with language that the most people understand. Does a tween understand 'people who menstruate'? Does someone with a different main language than English? What about someone with learning difficulties or who has not learned to connect 'menstruate' with 'periods'?

It is a communication failure.

When 'people with cervix' was being discussed, there was a study where half of women did not know they had a cervix!

EyesOpening · 01/09/2020 18:53

Actually thank you for reviving this thread, it’s reminded me to email Superdrug to ask when they’re going to do the sane with the men’s section on their website and change the brand name and packaging for their B. Men range

Alwaysinpain · 01/09/2020 19:00

I think they're just trying to protect their brand from hysteria. Much like what this thread seems to be trying to create

Eo91 · 01/09/2020 19:10

@DRH90

The women on this thread have been plenty kind. They've listened to other opinions, asked questions and suggested alternative solutions that work for everyone. Superdrug (and many other companies that sell period products) have attempted more inclusive language and have mangled it pretty badly by ostracising women and reducing us all to a biological function rather than referring to us as as the women, girls and transmen that use their products. What they should be doing now is listening to feedback and trying again instead of going shrugging, saying "good enough" and patting themselves on the back for their 'inclusivity.'

RufustheSniggeringReindeer · 01/09/2020 19:11

@Deltoids1

Not all women menstruate, not all people who menstruate are women. That is a fact.

No it isn’t. Men do not have periods. Men do not have uteruses.
Stop being ridiculous.

C,mon deltoids

They even said ‘fact’

Obviously if a sentence ends in ‘fact’ its the end of the whole argument

Fact

persistentwoman · 01/09/2020 19:16

Ahh - the flat earthers have arrived - fact.

Durgasarrow · 01/09/2020 19:17

All the people who menstruate are actually women. Until we start labeling the folkity folx who poop as people who defecate, let's stop this nonsense if we can.

yourhairiswinterfire · 01/09/2020 19:19

A forum for mums. Many mothers of daughters. You want us to roll over and #bekind whilst the likes of Stonewall campaign to remove their rights, by removing their sex as a protected characteristic? Hell no. I'll fight that until my last breath.

And for the love of God, no one is assigned a sex at birth. Sex can be observed as early as 14 weeks into a pregnancy, long before birth.

If it doesn't affect you but can help someone else then why on earth would you take issue with it?

It does affect us. Isolated, it may not seem like much of an incident, but it's just the tip of the iceberg.

LunaFortuna · 01/09/2020 19:26

DRH90 - you know something, I don’t think it is kind to go along with something that isn’t true. Sex is not assigned like some kind of lottery, it is what it is and even with the best will in the world it cannot change. Nobody should be bullied or discriminated against, transphobia should not be tolerated, but it is not kind to conspire with a fallacy and I don’t think we are doing anyone any favours when we do.

Maybe this is a tiny thing, maybe in the big scheme of things it’s not a big deal. But all the tiny things add up to a changing of language that is affecting only women - micro aggressions that of course don’t affect men. And it’s enough, it’s really enough.

And I no longer menstruate, I’m still a woman.

midgebabe · 01/09/2020 19:29

There is nothing wrong if we don't identify as a specific sex. Its actually normal for women and girls to think sex is nothing more than biology

We need to be considered as unique humans independent of that sex, that's feminism for you

When will trans people stop trying to force women into a cage where woman means anythjbg more than simple biology?

No girl need any help or treatment if she does not identify as woman with all its bagage

When will trans people realise that, if woman is not about biology then most people are trans, that it's so normal it doesn't need any special treatment

SteakExpectations · 01/09/2020 19:30

If, on period and products, women are “people who menstruate” - I’m looking forward to seeing how men are described on condom packaging!

“People who ejaculate” perhaps...?

CoffeeTeaChocolate · 01/09/2020 19:42

If you are a male and suddenly find a lot of blood in your underwear, you should probably see a doctor.

If you are female and your periods stop, you should probably also see a doctor.

Isn’t it a bit dangerous to have as a general message that it it normal for “people” to need pads, but if you don’t need them, not to worry?

Is that really being kind?

RufustheSniggeringReindeer · 01/09/2020 19:47

And I no longer menstruate, I’m still a woman

I bloody wish i didnt menstruate anymore. I’m bored witless by the whole thing

But when my periods finally end...I’ll still be a woman

DianasLasso · 01/09/2020 19:51

What's the commonality between the people who menstruate, the people who need cervical smears, the people who need antenatal care, the people who need abortion services, the people who get paid less on average, the people who are over-represented in caring professions, the people several times as likely to be victims of sexual assault, the people two orders of magnitude less likely to be the perpetrators of sexual assault, the people who couldn't vote in the UK in my menstruating grandparent's lifetime, the people who couldn't get mortgages in their own right in my menstruating parent's lifetime, the people who could be legally raped within marriage during my adult lifetime?

I wonder if there's any sort of political commonality out there, which could tie these disparate groups together into a single demographic who've suffered systematic oppression over millenia...

But nope, let's not worry about that. Let's just "be kind."

In fact, I have this nagging suspicion that the exortation to "be kind" may itself be more likely to be made towards people in this mythical single demographic I can't quite put my finger on, let alone name. Because the power of naming things belongs to the powerful in society, not to the powerless.

Winesalot · 01/09/2020 19:59

So many feminists have been campaigning for years to ensure women who do not menstruate are not made to feel any less of a woman for not doing so.

I have been on a personal campaign to actually be able to not be ‘shamed’ for actually talking about my periods. I have been on a personal campaign to be taken seriously by doctors that I genuinely have significant pain and flooding issues and that it is NOT in my head. And all of sudden, I am again being told off for discussing my periods using words that I wish to use (that have been the same words that my mother and grandmother used). And when I disagree, I am unkind, phobic and hysterical..... How is this progress?

RufustheSniggeringReindeer · 01/09/2020 19:59

@SteakExpectations

“People who ejaculate” perhaps...?

Ive provided dd with condoms

How am I supposed to phrase that

Person who doesnt want another person to ejeculate inside them

Poota · 01/09/2020 20:00

Be kind = Shut up and do as you're told.

Not ever going to buy into that coercive shit again.

ThinEndoftheWedge · 01/09/2020 20:03

Likewise there are many woman do not menstruate.

As a 43yr old woman who doesn’t menstruate due to illness and medication, I can confirm that only women menstruate and I do not find it at all excluding to use the word women when I cannot menstruate.

Lordamighty · 01/09/2020 20:14

not all people who menstruate are women. That is a fact.

sex they were assigned at birth

It doesn’t matter how many times TRA’s come on here & say this, it still isn’t true. Now that is a fact.

SteakExpectations · 01/09/2020 20:14

@RufustheSniggeringReindeer

“Human receptacle of said ejaculate“? Grin
