Just announced that this will be a topic for discussion tomorrow. It will be interesting whether, following a shift in people being more allowed to discuss this, and it being clear how this triggers violent misogyny, whether WH will realise that giving a fair hearing to the gender critical view is essential.

Belcher said self-id already exists so what's the fuss, basically. Is that right?

Melroses · 16/06/2020 10:42

Interesting that the first guest ran off rather than debate...

The first guests works extensively on these issues with the Liberal Party and beyond, and stands for parliament and pushes hard for changes in the law on the GRA and was spearheading a campaign to make it harder for spouses of transitioners to get a divorce under the misnomer of "spousal veto"*

Yet can't debate any of it Hmm

*This is just what I know about, there is probably much more.

Clymene · 16/06/2020 10:43

No debate is such a good look for someone who wants to be an MP Hmm

VickyEadieofThigh · 16/06/2020 10:43

Why is the first argument “How will this be policed?” = “How are you going to stop me then?”

Yes! They tend to accompany that with "TW have been using the women's facilities for years..." If that's the case, why are you so bothered about the plan to keep the status quo, therefore?

VickyEadieofThigh · 16/06/2020 10:45

Belcher said self-id already exists so what's the fuss, basically. Is that right?

So why are she and the rest of the TRA lobby getting so exercised about retaining the current position?

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 16/06/2020 10:45

I didn't know Helen Belcher's name off the top of my head, but as soon as I heard the faux-breathy voice, I bet myself that Helen Belcher was not born female.

I googled images and I saw a fairly obviously male-sexed person made up in women's clothing, hairstyle and makeup.

When Helen then said Helen was as much a woman and as at just as high a risk of being raped as any [female] woman, I lost interest. Anyone weaponising their likelihood of rape as a way to prove they are a real woman is no ally to women at all. In fact quite the opposite. Sickening.

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 16/06/2020 10:47

BTW the interview in the next segment with Susie Dent has also been rather pointed about male vs female-based language.

ScreamingBeans · 16/06/2020 10:49

Joan Smith was brilliant

WH are asking for us to contact them

Angryresister · 16/06/2020 10:51

Disappointed that the pile of Emails were not read, but yes the discussion about language also interesting. They need to do a whole programme on women’s concerns.

Melroses · 16/06/2020 10:56

There was no answer to that really. The lack of the lived experience of a young teenage girl and young woman really shows.

Grin Will do.

Used to love Jane Garvey, liked the fact that she cut very sharply through quite a lot of BS on Woman's Hour and had a lovely cynical wit. But if she is a feminist you've never guess, would you?

JellyFishSquish · 16/06/2020 11:04

The fawning over Belcher made me squirm. And I am pretty sure I wasn't imagining it. Jane Garvey trying SO hard not to offend. Practically genuflecting with all the "so vulnerable" etc. But gave no such vibes when speaking to Joan Smith. Funny that.

JellyFishSquish · 16/06/2020 11:05

Almost as if it didn't matter if she offended a woman, or put a woman on the spot.

JellyFishSquish · 16/06/2020 11:07

It's fucking Woman's Hour and Joan Garvey is playing "support human" to a transwoman.

ThinEndoftheWedge · 16/06/2020 11:08

HB turns JKR experience of male on female patterned sexual violence to focus on HB

HB states ‘ I am also subject to the same particular form of violence’

HB states ‘I am equally likely to be raped’

How on earth could Woman’s Hour not question such utter insulting c*?

HB is the class of human who commits the vast majority of sexual crimes, not the class of human in which 90% of sexual crimes happen to.

Apparently TW are ‘deceptive’ men. Take the perceptive out HB and you might finally be on to something.

Joan Smith - legend.

FantaOra · 16/06/2020 11:12

Belcher had the hump about being left off the shitty letter to the Sun, claiming to have written one sooner. Not so much the abuse, that was less important. Dear me, have they any idea how they come over.

vaginafetishist · 16/06/2020 11:14

What are Finn Mackay's arguments? I can never make head nor tail of them.

R0wantrees · 16/06/2020 11:15

I didn't know Helen Belcher's name off the top of my head, but as soon as I heard the faux-breathy voice, I bet myself that Helen Belcher was not born female.

It is worthwhile taking a little time to understand the extent of Belcher's influence.

R0wantrees · 16/06/2020 11:16

This would be a useful segment to have transcribed.

She has been a terrible disappointment.

OTOH, she’s a single parent, needs to earn a living and, having seen what happened to Jenni Murray, maybe she feels the need to perform perfect neutrality.

I wouldn’t necessarily attribute it to her being scarred of the Twitter mob, more than she’s scared of being jobless.

ArriettyJones · 16/06/2020 11:24

That not than.

I think it's worth pointing out to Woman's Hour that Garvey's neutrality is being impacted by fear of being targeted and 'cancelled' by extremists. That's pretty bloody serious.

MindTheMinotaur · 16/06/2020 11:31

I've read Helen Belcher's letter to JK Rowling online. It's just me, me, me, me, me.
