Nearly everyone I know agrees with JK Rowling but literally whispers it in case they are overheard.

I have a couple of friends who are very vocal about calling her a bigot and saying she is literally causing transwomen to kill themselves - and it is highly apparent that they have not read or understood what she said......

rabbitwoman · 28/06/2020 08:18

Actually, though a few celebrities have put out statements, most people are keeping their mouths tight shut. If you wanted to condemn JK Rowling a la Eddie redmain, Daniel Radcliffe, now would be a great time. You would be celebrated for doing so. But I think silence speaks much loder at the moment....

Anyone watch the last leg - last episode was shown before JK Rowling 's essay but after the body shop furore, and they said not a word. Adam Hills has proudly introduced his new puppy as Albus Dumbledog in previous episodes, too. Don't tell me they just don't know, it their JOB to know....

gardenbird48 · 28/06/2020 08:22

John Cleese started a great thread asking the activists to explain it all to him and exposed the crazy to another new audience. Richard Dawkins has supported her in a slightly oblique way.

Igneococcus · 28/06/2020 08:28

"Even my woke younger sister agrees with her."

My 15 year old daughter is fully behind JKR and at least two of her friends are as well.

Alltheprettyseahorses · 28/06/2020 08:48

I hope Keir Starmer shows himself as a supporter today.

pappyon · 28/06/2020 15:50

Oh, Anne Marie Waters
Nigel Farage
Anne Widdecombe
Katie Hopkins
Milo Yiannopoulos
Carl Benjamin, of course..

hellandhairnets · 28/06/2020 16:55

Someone appears to be getting rather desperate. I look forward to seeing who might be added onto the next missive. Pol Pot? Goebbels? Genghis Khan?

Much as I know certain people like to associate well known Labour-party donator JK Rowling with the far right, you'll find there are certainly many left and liberal leaning people who support her, myself included. Certainly in real life. It might be why, despite the outraged screams from young supposedly "progressive" Labour activists, at least two North London local Labour parties voted for, as I recall, the single sex spaces part of the manifesto.

It might also be why Allison Bailey's crowdfunder to aid her fight against Stonewall made 60k in easily verifiable small donations within a matter of hours yesterday despite being forced to be down for most of the day due to transactivist complaints. There are plenty more people ready and willing to donate once it's extended too,

Many ordinary people are really only just starting to see what's going on. And much of that is thanks to JK.

Has anyone mentioned Philip Hensher? Not JK specifically, but he certainly commented previously on the vile abuse of the "choke on my dick" variety TRAs were sending to lesbians. Oh, and Marc Almond. He's no longer on Twitter after the inevitable pile-on, but made his feelings known a while back re: the demands for mixed sex toilets, how it was treating women unfairly, and how ridiculous things had become.

pappyon · 28/06/2020 17:04

I think most sensible people would agree that online abuse is abhorrent and no-one should be subject to it, no matter what their views are. Apologies, I thought this thread was about people who supported JK's views on transgender rights. Important not to conflate the two issues.

SunsetBeetch · 28/06/2020 17:45

Hilarious Hmm

SameOldBS · 28/06/2020 18:59

Stephen King

Helmetbymidnight · 28/06/2020 19:31

yass! we'll see a lot more people speaking out soon.

so many people have been silenced- massive kudos to all those academics, journalists and activists who took the shit for the rest of us.

GrumpyGran8 · 28/06/2020 19:31

Thanks SameOld!
Even though I follow King, I hadn't seen that he'd RTd one of JKR's tweets from today (It was the one with the Dworkin quote.) He witnessed domestic violence as a child (and used those experiences in some of his novels, such as Dolores Claiborne), so it doesn't surprise me that he's supportive.
Many of the replies are predictable, like this one:
"Oh no Stephen, not you too
If Stephen King is a terf then that's my day ruined"

GrumpyGran8 · 28/06/2020 20:56

And JKR has returned the compliment!
I've always revered @StephenKing, but today my love reached - maybe not Annie Wilkes levels - but new heights. It's so much easier for men to ignore women's concerns, or to belittle them, but I won't ever forget the men who stood up when they didn't need to. Thank you, Stephen.

JulesJules · 28/06/2020 22:52

Well he's just tweeted TWAW, so...

deathswiftlyfollows · 28/06/2020 23:00

So disappointing urgh

Langbannedforsafeguardingkids · 29/06/2020 00:01

If TWAW why are they 'trans'. If they literally are women what are they transing from or to? Makes no sense. Why can't trans people be trans and proud of it rather than trying to force people to repeat something that doesn't make sense over and over.

These days it's basically code for 'stop abusing me on twitter'.

OnlyTheLangoftheTitBerg · 29/06/2020 00:12

I said this on the SK thread, but David Baddiel has retweeted JKR again this evening.

pappyon · 29/06/2020 14:01

So hang on, you're turning on Stephen King because of his views on gender identity, even though he stuck up for JK Rowling and supported her views on violence against women?

Helmetbymidnight · 29/06/2020 14:35

when you say 'turning on' him- do you mean like people turned on jkr- threatening to kill, rape, choke her and burn her books or do you mean people have just expressed disappointment with his views?

Zoikes · 29/06/2020 14:42

I do think less of anyone who repeats the TWAW slogan, it just sets off the borg alarm in my head. I try to be reasonable and patient, after all if you really do think TWAW then you just haven't yet thought it through to it's inevitable circular nonsense. Waiting for people to peak and catch up is just part of life in the face of controlled social media propaganda now.

RevIMJolly · 29/06/2020 18:37

I may be thinking too much into this but I reckon that anyone who obviously swerves talking about this when it’s an open goal is either on the fence or not a massive fan of the TWAW / if you disagree with me you should die in a grease fire line.

Was listening to Kermode and Mayo Film podcast. They were going through a list and talking a little about every entry. They then mentioned Daniel Radcliffe with no comment at all.

I know I’m reaching but I would hope that they would at least think that Radcliffe and co have behaved poorly.

I’ve seen Lucy Mangan like feminist tweets.

And I think Caitlin Moran is a coward. She is talented and funny, and I have previously bought her books, both for myself and other people. She is also bright enough to work out a way of saying something.
I am so, so disappointed in her.

Siablue · 29/06/2020 19:16

Caitlin Moran has a new book coming out. It is the sequel to how to be a woman and covers ageing menopause etc. It will be interesting as he previous book is very focused on biology but she has said TWAW. I think it would be harder to get that balance now.

RevIMJolly · 29/06/2020 20:23

Interesting. I had no idea what her book will be about. I know it’s called ‘More than a Woman’ so maybe she can wriggle out of making a statement that way.

I don’t know how you can write about feminism and tell the story of your childhood that had been shaped by being female (4 times, the same story, in 4 formats) And not at least recognise that there is no such thing as women being threatened by rape and murder by saying biological sex exists.

pappyon · 29/06/2020 20:47

@Zoikes

I do think less of anyone who repeats the TWAW slogan, it just sets off the borg alarm in my head. Why do you think it's circular? You say you have been reasonable and patient, but you looked into what the arguments for TWAW are, have you tried to see it from the other side?
Zoikes · 29/06/2020 21:17

Yes of course and then researched and thought it all through to conclusion - back to square one.

I think it a sad situation that anorexics see fat in the mirror too.

Trying to obfusticate by adopting the language of stereoisomerism and any other flimflam that comes to hand doesn't persuade me to parrot memes.

Everyone is entitled to their own beliefs, nobody is entitled to force those beliefs on others.
