JKR rebuttals from cis women?

Treats · 11/06/2020 19:33

I’ve seen a few rebuttals of the JKR statement, but only from trans women or men (mostly with beards). I’m genuinely interested to learn about the ‘other side’ of the issue, but I want to hear it from people who have a female body. I want to hear from someone who’s actually menstruated why they’re comfortable with the term “people who menstruate” instead of “women”, for example.

My natural instinct is with JKR but I work with a lot of people who are horrified by what’s she’s said, and I genuinely want to question my beliefs in this area. But I don’t want a man to tell me what I should think when the question is about what makes women distinctive.

Has anyone seen anything?

pelleas proves my point.

ZarkingBell · 11/06/2020 21:28

I disagree with J K Rowling.

I can't normally be bothered to make my case here as any point, no mattered how 'nuanced' is rebuffed as 'drank the koolaid', 'handmaiden', 'woke', 'ignorant young women who don't know yet' and any number of attacks with no nuance whatsoever.

Concerns about the potentially damaging effects of social media on any teen's wellbeing in so many areas do not justify the obsession so many people here demonstrate.

OldCrone · 11/06/2020 21:30

I disagree with J K Rowling.

Why? On what particular point? Or do you disagree with everything she said?

Pelleas · 11/06/2020 21:33

pelleas proves my point

I'm not going to call myself a 'person who menstruates' because I don't menstruate. I'd have been happy to call myself a person who menstruates when I actually did menstruate.

PurpleHoodie · 11/06/2020 21:34

Cis?

@MNHQ Shut this shit down.

Reported.

Much thanks.

HepzibahGreen · 11/06/2020 21:38

"Women with female bodies" PMSL
Who really talks like this??
All women have female bodies!
And Only Women Bleed, or at least according to a man named Alice Grin Gin

Treats · 11/06/2020 21:38

Are you saying you haven’t seen a rebuttal from a woman or is it just that I managed to derail my own thread through my clumsy choice of language?

Joanna sums it up well

Purple Hoodie, the OP has apologised for using the term Cis. It was a clumsy use of language.

PurpleHoodie · 11/06/2020 21:43

Where?

Treat Put in writing here that you agree "Cis" is a slur and you apologise for using it.

MaleficentsCrow · 11/06/2020 21:44

pelleas why not just call yourself person who no longer menstruates then?

Or does woman fit the bill?

Betty98 · 11/06/2020 21:44

I think I’m a bit lost here, hoping for some clarity... (completely new to the subject so please don’t shoot me down!)

JKR definitely seems to be talking about “men in women’s spaces”. Which obviously has some implications on trans women.

But doesn’t the “people who menstruate” thing look to appease the issues that trans men have. That they identify as men but as they were born women they also happen to menstruate. And that they disagree that “only women menstruate” based on that.

So is there not two completely separate issues going on here??

Betty98 · 11/06/2020 21:45

purple it was at 8.32

BringbackLang · 11/06/2020 21:47

I’m sorry about using ‘cis’ - it’s not a term I use myself and I understand how you all feel. I’m struggling with language because TWAW feels inauthentic to me, but is definitely the predominant discourse in my circle. So I feel very nervous about expressing my real thoughts. My first post was hedged about with “suppose x knew that this was me”, and I felt the need to have some deniability in there.

At 20.32 GMT. Took me all of two seconds to find it.

Treats · 11/06/2020 21:48

I did apologise - and explain - in my second or third post. But happy to apologise again. I am very sorry for using the term.

It's a telling fact that TRAs have no word for 'woman' in the sense of adult human female. The closest they get is 'afab' which is more of an adjective.

Treats · 11/06/2020 21:52

What’s ‘Adan’?

OP posts:
Treats · 11/06/2020 21:52

‘Afab’ - sorry

OP posts:
NotTerfNorCis · 11/06/2020 21:53

Also 'afab' just means assigned, it doesn't mean the person is female, just that they were assigned such. So it still doesn't mean adult human female.

Treats I don't think it matters that you used the word 'cis'. Let's move on.

BaronessRadishFemish · 11/06/2020 21:55

What does the original post mean? I can't make any sense of it.

NotTerfNorCis · 11/06/2020 21:57

Afab = Assigned Female at Birth.
Amab = Assigned Male at Birth.

It's all about identity, with TRAs. No one just is male or female. They are assigned an identity or they choose it. 'Cis' women means 'afabs' who choose to identify with the gender they were assigned when they were born. Any afab who doesn't identify with that gender isn't a woman at all, according to TRA logic. So there is no word that encompasses all biological women (regardless of identity).

Mrskeats · 11/06/2020 21:58

Please don't use cis it's highly offensive

Treats · 11/06/2020 22:05

Baroness - I wondered if anyone had seen a rebuttal of JKR by a woman. Obviously trans women are going to disagree with her and I don’t think men have an informed view of this issue. I’m surrounded by people who think TWAW and I would like to understand better where they’re coming from because I instinctively disagree.

Iamanaubergine · 11/06/2020 22:06

Sarah Keyworth (lesbian comedian) wrote an open letter to JKR. She’s @sarahkcomedy on Twitter

JayAlfredPrufrock · 11/06/2020 22:16

I’m fortunate in that I don’t know anyone who thinks TWAW. How on earth can you take people seriously who do?
