I think the rage on Twitter is actually a positive thing. You only get that type of fury when someone’s ideology is under threat. The movement is cracking under the pressure of reason because it’s built on fantasy and fluff.

Fairenuff · 10/06/2020 23:21

I'm sick of all this fear mongering about the GRA, there's little to no chance that a man would go to the effort of declaring a change of gender just to infiltrate women's spaces.

Um, well that already happened

In any case, it's not about men pretending to be trans, it's about men taking advantage of anyone being allowed access to female only spaces because female will include 'anyone who says they are'. They don't need to put on a dress, change their name or even shave.

Melroses · 10/06/2020 23:21

Emma is a silly girl not fit to lick JKs boots.

They have really exposed themselves as vacuous. Acting clichés.

MiraWard77 · 10/06/2020 23:21

Haven't RTFT (I know, I'll have missed something important; apologies)

Came here after reading the essay. And got to this comment, with which I could not agree more:

@WomaninBoots "Holy crap I am SO close to sharing this on Facebook and losing all my friends... SO close."

I'm still so scared of being reported as a non-crime hate criminal and losing my job though. So came here to rave instead.

And as another PP noted, JK must me a MNer, so: Thank you! Please set up a charity/foundation for actual women, JK. I will pay membership.

nauticant · 10/06/2020 23:22

Having looked at a number of reports in the mainstream media I'm worried. The media outlets are looking for a hook on which to sell the story to their audience, and the hook they're going for, as being the juiciest and most tempting, is the news that JKR suffered "domestic abuse and sexual assault". Thus the story, pre-packaged for the delectation of the audience, becomes: "JKR says her controversial statements about transgender issues are justified because she has suffered domestic abuse and sexual assault". In this way, her excellent essay can be misrepresented as being a long way of saying that transwomen are predators.

Justhadathought · 10/06/2020 23:27

I think many of us have been in the position she has found herself in, as a result pf posting honest views on social media, and we will therefore have deep empathy and total understanding of the kind of 'lay it all out' and deeply personal revelation that tends to ensue.

Good on her! it can only make her even more brave and outspoken When you have been subject to such nastiness and vilification from total strangers, and lived to survive it......you tend to "grow a pair", and in doing so, get some persepective.

Honestly, though, social media and twitter, specifically is the pits. When it comes to the court of public opinion most will be oblivious as to her 'trial' or what she has ben put on trial for.

BonjourMinou · 10/06/2020 23:28

Another long time FWR lurker joining the thread to say: thank you, Jo. Thank you for your bravery and your eloquence. Thank you for not stepping down. I shared your article to my Facebook. Courage calls to courage.

I shall join the Mumsnet orchestra with a tambourine grabbed from the kids music box. Thanks

Doyoumind · 10/06/2020 23:28

Yes nauticant, I saw the Guardian going for that headline. The responses below made me angry - suggesting it was a convenient 'out' and comparing her to Kevin Spacey.

testing987654321 · 10/06/2020 23:28

I just got the same feeling after reading the Guardian headline, definitely going for the most salacious part instead of what her main points really are.

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 10/06/2020 23:30

She is so a MNetter. If you’re reading this, Jo, you fucking rock!

I’ve emailed her too, in the probably faint hope of balancing the rabid abuse somewhat.

Fairenuff · 10/06/2020 23:30

A key differentiation is between the words "sex" and "gender". Our sex, which is physical - male or female - is distinct from our gender, which is psychological and social.

Blimey I never thought I'd see the day when the BBC made a factual statement on this subject.

LittleCabbage · 10/06/2020 23:31

That is one of the most articulate, intelligent and well-reasoned pieces of writing that I have ever read. Not even a tiny hint of any ill-will towards trans people, and a clear explanation of your concerns.

Well done Jo, you are brave and strong, and I am in awe of you. And from your language, it is obvious that you are on Mumsnet - that is so good to know! Flowers

TilerSwift · 10/06/2020 23:33

I’m a bit confused. So JK Rowling has been hauled over the coals for pointing out its women, not people that menstruate yet the NHS website clearly says men (not people) suffer from prostate, testicular cancer etc. Eh?

Coffeeandbeans · 10/06/2020 23:37

A friend on FB posted the article. This friends has never shown any interested in this before. Occasionally a supportive post about trans rights. But now is actually saying the Jk Rawlings is spot on!!

WitchenKitch · 10/06/2020 23:45

I've emailed my thanks and support, and added that I hope that whoever is having to read all these emails won't let the negative responses get to them.

I am so thrilled at JK's bravery, and that she's setting an example of how not to back down!

Sparkyduchess · 10/06/2020 23:46

God, I really hope JK Rowling is here, and sees the outpouring of love and appreciation.

That essay was totally perfect. Articulate, clear and compassionate.

I’m just sorry she had to make public her private pain.

JK has been someone I’ve admired for years, never more so than now.

HermioneKipper · 10/06/2020 23:48

Just when I thought I couldn’t love her more. Damn she’s good.

Would love to post on social media but fear for my job sadly. I will be donating to JK’s chosen charities though and sending her an email.

What a woman, her writing is beautiful and articulate.

FaceOfASpink · 10/06/2020 23:49

I've been listening to the Wolf Hall trilogy recently and wondering how people could have been so savage as to cheer and watch the awful executions that took place. When I read the vileness on Twitter I see that the mentality behind it hasn't abated.

HermioneKipper · 10/06/2020 23:50

Am saddened by Emma Watson’s response.

Hadley Freeman has come out in support though. Copping abuse for it though :(

The vitriol and hate is truly shocking. And these people claim to be inclusive and compassionate. Hardly.

newrubylane · 10/06/2020 23:54

@Fairenuff - quite. It does make me wonder whether I should just declare myself trans and go and start lecturing them as if I know all about their struggles.

Ledkr · 11/06/2020 00:01

Some really good clear points. I have shared it with friends.
I particularly identified with her describing her jumpiness.
I still suffer this 30 odd years after my abuse and its also a family joke.
I actually cry if anyone comes into my room while im sleeping.

RasberryRoyale · 11/06/2020 00:03

I shared this on my social media. (As did my DH)

Disgusted but not surprised at Emma Watson.

NotBadConsidering · 11/06/2020 00:05

Just caught up with the thread. Someone made a very good point about the character Robyn and her PTSD.

And just seen this 🤣🤣🤣:

JK new post on her reasons for writing about gender
Datun · 11/06/2020 00:13

I'm sick of all this fear mongering about the GRA, there's little to no chance that a man would go to the effort of declaring a change of gender just to infiltrate women's spaces.

And I'm sick of the ignorance, or if it's not ignorance, lies.

You can shove your 'little or no chance', and tell it to the one in 50 sex offenders in prison who are identifying as women in order to access female prisons. And succeeding.

Do you think all these women are playing games?? Do you think J. K. Rowling is playing a fucking game?

Can you imagine being sent to prison, with, at best, a statistically 50/50 chance that you are already suffering from a head injury due to domestic abuse, and finding that you have been housed with serial paedophile and violent rapist Karen White?

Idiots.
