Daniel Radcliffe responds to JK Rowling’s tweets: “Transgender women are women. Any statement to the contrary erases the identity and dignity of transgender people”

Daniel Radcliffe Responds to J.K. Rowling’s Tweets on Gender Identity – The Trevor Project

FULL STATEMENT

I realize that certain press outlets will probably want to paint this as in-fighting between J.K. Rowling and myself, but that is really not what this is about, nor is it what’s important right now. While Jo is unquestionably responsible for the course my life has taken, as someone who has been honored to work with and continues to contribute to The Trevor Project for the last decade, and just as a human being, I feel compelled to say something at this moment.

Transgender women are women. Any statement to the contrary erases the identity and dignity of transgender people and goes against all advice given by professional health care associations who have far more expertise on this subject matter than either Jo or I. According to The Trevor Project, 78% of transgender and nonbinary youth reported being the subject of discrimination due to their gender identity. It’s clear that we need to do more to support transgender and nonbinary people, not invalidate their identities, and not cause further harm.

I am still learning how to be a better ally, so if you want to join me in learning more about transgender and nonbinary identities check out The Trevor Project’s Guide to Being an Ally to Transgender and Nonbinary Youth. It’s an introductory educational resource that covers a wide range of topics, including the differences between sex and gender, and shares best practices on how to support transgender and nonbinary people.

To all the people who now feel that their experience of the books has been tarnished or diminished, I am deeply sorry for the pain these comments have caused you. I really hope that you don’t entirely lose what was valuable in these stories to you. If these books taught you that love is the strongest force in the universe, capable of overcoming anything; if they taught you that strength is found in diversity, and that dogmatic ideas of pureness lead to the oppression of vulnerable groups; if you believe that a particular character is trans, nonbinary, or gender fluid, or that they are gay or bisexual; if you found anything in these stories that resonated with you and helped you at any time in your life — then that is between you and the book that you read, and it is sacred. And in my opinion nobody can touch that. It means to you what it means to you and I hope that these comments will not taint that too much.

Love always,
Dan

Let's have more flowers for J K and not focus on this wee nyaff

WhatAWonderfulDay · 09/06/2020 09:05

Why is this male responding to a tweet about women menstruating by saying transwomen are women? Why is he waffling about expertise when incorrectly telling women what women are?

This!!
God, I am so angry!!

Mammatino · 09/06/2020 09:05

No Daniel. You are wrong.

FFSFFSFFS · 09/06/2020 09:05

Shouldn't his whole point have been about transmen being men? The tweet was about periods.

I'm perplexed - why is there no reference to transmen?

It's almost like the whole think is about how more important males are than females.

Sexnotgender · 09/06/2020 09:05

The only reason Daniel isn’t teaching at the local comp or stacking shelves is because of that amazing woman. He wasn’t some great undiscovered acting talent, he’s mediocre at best. How dare he speak over her.

SpokeTooSoon · 09/06/2020 09:06

I’m sure she doesn’t need my sympathy but poor Jo Rowling. How is she holding out against this bullying? I want to weep or scream reading the tweets against her. People have lost all reason and sensible thinking in their desire to be woke.

Why are so many straight men bending over backwards to appease transwomen when they have never expressed a feminist thought in their life?

These people don’t care about women. They care about men. Ergo they care about transwomen. Who are men.

Fuck you Daniel Radcliffe. What a betrayal.

MockersGuidedByTheScience · 09/06/2020 09:07

Jo Rowling went to state primary and secondary schools and gained a degree from Exeter University.

Daniel Radcliffe went to three very prestigious private schools and was privately tutored, gaining three A Levels.

PaddlingPoolAgain · 09/06/2020 09:08

BashStreetKid The suggestion that my dignity and identity is in any way compromised by calling a transgender woman a woman is manifestly absurd.

Calling a man a woman is manifestly absurd.
Pretending men are women removes the right to sex-segrated spaces in one stroke. Because now men are allowed in, if they call themselves women. In fact, it removes the right to sex-segregated anything, including sports where men have a physical advantage (that is not removed by taking cross sex hormones), allowing boys to share dorms with girls on school trip (oh and there is a rich vein of such safeguarding protocols being chucked aside in the name of trans), or losing your right to see a female healthcare professional.

BovaryX identity politics is predicated upon a pyramid of oppression in which trans are at the very apex of suffering.

I know, I'm just waiting for the day transactivists clash with whoever's next on the pyramid of suffering just to see how the woke people I know cope with it. They might actually have to apply some critical thought...

PinkLynx yet it's really men who are harassing, beating up and abusing transgender people (and women and other men) , not in fact women at all. And yet no one has a go at men for this. It's just women that get all the stick for hurting their feelings. But where's the real problem.

Exactly.

If you stop to think about it, the actual danger and discrimination trans people face is due to them not obeying sex-based stereotypes, and not being at the pinnacle of the gender hierachy, (ie. not being "manly" men). Really on both these counts you'd think they have a lot in common with feminists!

But instead of identifying and recognising this discrimination, they instead pretend that it's all about people's women's thought-crime of not believeing they really are the sex they pretend to be.

In other words, if Dave next door goes out for a night in a dress and some lippy, the ignorant twats that would beat him up are going to regardless of whether he calls himself Dave or Davina.

I actually think we need a specific word for "discrimination on the basis of not adhering to gender sterotypes" (a subcategory of sexism) to specifically address the actual difficulties trans people face, rather than the strange egotistical insistence we should all share their belief system.

ValkyrieCain · 09/06/2020 09:11

I took a look at The Trevor Project website.

They say this

"When we’re born, a doctor assigns us a sex. This has to do with our biology, chromosomes, and physical body. Male babies are generally assumed to be “men” and female babies are generally assumed to be “women.” Some people never question their assigned gender or sex, and choose to identify with what they were assigned at birth – that’s called being “cisgender.” But there are others who do question their gender or sex, and that’s completely normal and ok."

I don't know if I have interpreted this correctly BUT, is that a confirmation that "male" and "female" babies are the product of biology?

They seem very clear on the distinction between gender and biological sex.

ATomeOfOnesOwn · 09/06/2020 09:11

I feel Jonathon Ross' recanting is slightly different. Disappointing but obviously influenced by family pressure. He's talked before about one of his DDs being on the spectrum and I imagine his DD happily springboarding off his statement to get some tv interviews about how she disagreed with him, has led to issues at home.

Heygirlheyboy · 09/06/2020 09:11

So true FFSFFSFFS !!

Also, I work in the local primary, nothing wrong with that! And at least I have my integrity!

Gncq · 09/06/2020 09:12

His PR agent clearly made him do it.
Spineless prick.

littlbrowndog · 09/06/2020 09:12

More from twitter.

Women are under attack; men can help, just by showing their support. Will you answer the call?

Philip Pullman: Why bother?
Jonathan Ross: It's complicated
Daniel Radcliffe: TRANS WOMEN ARE WOMEN!

Beamur · 09/06/2020 09:14

Thanks for the mansplaining Dan. That's sorted it all out for me!
Apologising on behalf of 'Jo' takes some fucking arrogance though. Jeez.
Yup, it really is all about men (as if we didn't know that already)

PaddlingPoolAgain · 09/06/2020 09:16

ValkyrieCain
Why does accepting that my sex is female make me cis gender ?
They missed the bit where you are assigned a gender role based on your sex. Which is observed, not assigned.
What am I if I accept I am female, but don't agree with the gender sterotypes Im expected to live up to?

merrymouse · 09/06/2020 09:16

I’m sure she doesn’t need my sympathy but poor Jo Rowling. How is she holding out against this bullying?

I think she has some good friends.

This will either die down or her critics will eventually regret shining so much light on this issue.

DR has certainly demonstrated that transmen can be victims of sexism regardless of how they identify!

Enderthedragon · 09/06/2020 09:17

I have read what he said a few times now - did he seriously not even bother to mention trans men? He didn't say 'trans men are men' at all?! Shock Despite the fact that JK's tweet is about menstruation and its trans men that it's 'offensive' to? Well there you go Kenny Ethan Jones and the other trans men who have spent the last couple of days insulting Rowling think about that then?!

DR didn't even address any of the points that JK made, he just came out with the usual easy platitudes that he knows will stop him from 'being cancelled'. Pathetic.

I agree, this is nothing new. A man telling women what they can and can't be be, defining them, apologising on their behalf when they have done nothing wrong. It's just misogyny packaged up in a different way isn't it?

And when he says he is 'still learning', he doesn't mean listening to women does he? He means learning the next virtue cookie earning soundbite that he can reel off in order to look good to certain people. What a coward.

Emma Watson will be under huge pressure to say something right now, she has already spoken out loads about how TWAW and is best pals with Paris Lees.

HollySideEyes · 09/06/2020 09:18

I'm certain she has good friends.

Kit19 · 09/06/2020 09:18

You know what I’m almost at the stage of let it happen, let the bin fire unfold. Everyone on my social media under the age of 35 is over joyed at Radcliffes intervention crowing over how that’s showed the TERFS. Why exactly am I trying to save these girls & women from themselves?

Maybe the binfire has to happen in order for them to understand

Enderthedragon · 09/06/2020 09:19

Well there you go Kenny Ethan Jones and the other trans men who have spent the last couple of days insulting Rowling think about that then?!

Sorry that makes no sense, it was two sentences welded into one but hopefully you get the gist!

thisisawful · 09/06/2020 09:19

why is there no reference to transmen[?] because they don't get such a bashing online as transwomen do.

When people say mumsnet can be very transphobic it is this sort of thread which they are talking about. There are a lot of comments on here which come across as prejudiced, unkind, inhumane - NOT as fighting for women's rights or even relevant to women's rights.

I don't agree with anyone being bullying, neither women supporting women, nor anyone else.

Enderthedragon · 09/06/2020 09:19

As a total aside, I can't believe Emma Watson is 30!!! In my mind she is 22/23 tops!

BoreOfWhabylon · 09/06/2020 09:20

Check your privilege, Daniel.

And educate yourself, like JKR has done.

boatyardblues · 09/06/2020 09:21

I am not remotely surprised, as I’d assumed he was a wokebeard but I echo that tweet posted upthread about him waving his dick in JKR’s face, having built a career on her creative endeavours.

ssd · 09/06/2020 09:21

Daniel Radcliffe should really shut up. What a load of shite. People who menstruate are women. Full stop. Say it how it is.

All this is nonsense.
