Daniel Radcliffe responds to JK Rowling’s tweets: “Transgender women are women. Any statement to the contrary erases the identity and dignity of transgender people”

Daniel Radcliffe Responds to J.K. Rowling’s Tweets on Gender Identity – The Trevor Project

FULL STATEMENT

I realize that certain press outlets will probably want to paint this as in-fighting between J.K. Rowling and myself, but that is really not what this is about, nor is it what’s important right now. While Jo is unquestionably responsible for the course my life has taken, as someone who has been honored to work with and continues to contribute to The Trevor Project for the last decade, and just as a human being, I feel compelled to say something at this moment.

Transgender women are women. Any statement to the contrary erases the identity and dignity of transgender people and goes against all advice given by professional health care associations who have far more expertise on this subject matter than either Jo or I. According to The Trevor Project, 78% of transgender and nonbinary youth reported being the subject of discrimination due to their gender identity. It’s clear that we need to do more to support transgender and nonbinary people, not invalidate their identities, and not cause further harm.

I am still learning how to be a better ally, so if you want to join me in learning more about transgender and nonbinary identities check out The Trevor Project’s Guide to Being an Ally to Transgender and Nonbinary Youth. It’s an introductory educational resource that covers a wide range of topics, including the differences between sex and gender, and shares best practices on how to support transgender and nonbinary people.

To all the people who now feel that their experience of the books has been tarnished or diminished, I am deeply sorry for the pain these comments have caused you. I really hope that you don’t entirely lose what was valuable in these stories to you. If these books taught you that love is the strongest force in the universe, capable of overcoming anything; if they taught you that strength is found in diversity, and that dogmatic ideas of pureness lead to the oppression of vulnerable groups; if you believe that a particular character is trans, nonbinary, or gender fluid, or that they are gay or bisexual; if you found anything in these stories that resonated with you and helped you at any time in your life — then that is between you and the book that you read, and it is sacred. And in my opinion nobody can touch that. It means to you what it means to you and I hope that these comments will not taint that too much.

Love always,
Dan

I'm not often on the feminist board but just popping in to say I liked what JKR tweeted and I don't think it's trans phobic.

nettie434 · 09/06/2020 09:23

He could easily have written something saying he personally disagreed with JKR but condemned the abusive language towards her.

As somebody said upthread, it is very unlikely he would be so famous and wealthy without JKR. He's quite entitled to have his own views on gender but he had the opportunity, which he has failed, to show he is a loyal person who disapproves of abusive pile ons.

Enderthedragon · 09/06/2020 09:23

why is there no reference to transmen[?] because they don't get such a bashing online as transwomen do.

Oh come on, we all know that's not why he didn't mention trans men. If he were actually referring to what JKR tweeted, he would only be mentioning trans men.

But as it was, quelle surprise they don't warrant a mention at all. I wonder why that could be? It sure is a headscratcher.....

Iggi999 · 09/06/2020 09:23

I wouldn't have expected anything else really (from DR) though silence would have been better. Still, it's HP I like not the actor who played him so it's not a great loss. Wonder what Hermione (the real one) would think.

ssd · 09/06/2020 09:23

And JKR probably knows he's a bit of a dick and just let's him warble on.

Michelleoftheresistance · 09/06/2020 09:23

Radcliffe comes out as a male supremacist. Except he's too flaming ignorant to realise it. Any minute now we'll have Emma Watson along to add that good girls enjoy their oppression and embrace it gladly, and the women's rights charity work she does is only needed by.... well. Other people in other countries she doesn't have to live in or worry about.

Two incredibly over privileged people with no idea what they're talking about, making what they see as just nice, supportive, kind noises because bless.

Yes, I'm starting to think, like Brexit, this issue is going to have to be walked off the cliff before the total fools in this country wake up and realise what they've done, and the massive damage to female people that has been created. By which point, the legislation will be so fucked up that the only way to reduce the discrimination and exclusion of vulnerable female people will be to come up with a new word for the female biological class and to set up new provision in addition to the two plus forms of male controlled provision that will have been rolled out nationally.

What the fuck has happened to this world since 2012? I swear it's like walking into the dark ages.

Iggi999 · 09/06/2020 09:24

Yes I know I've just called Hermione "real" Blush I mean not the actor.

Enderthedragon · 09/06/2020 09:24

Yeah, I can't believe he didn't even bother condemning the violent abusive language hurled towards her.

What a prick!

merrymouse · 09/06/2020 09:25

Some people never question their assigned gender or sex, and choose to identify with what they were assigned at birth – that’s called being “cisgender.” But there are others who do question their gender or sex, and that’s completely normal and ok

Think of the amount of privilege you need to believe this statement.

You have to believe that you will always have access to adequate healthcare; you will never have to worry about access to birth control; people who make and enforce laws will always prioritise your own concept of your own identity.

You also have to believe that by 'identifying with the gender you are assigned at birth', you aren't identifying as a second class citizen.

Oliversmumsarmy · 09/06/2020 09:25

If TWAW why as soon as an issue arises that women have to contend with they start screaming transphobia

When it’s FGM, which some are saying should, be gender gential mutlilation, as is starting to happen they’ll go back to being silent again and leave it to poor ethnic women to pick up the pieces.

This, from dances* Twitter link upthead.

Anyway. Daniel Radcliffe has always been 'Meh'.

So - not disappointed or upset.

As others have said: we'll concentrate on uplifting JKR Flowers

Clymene · 09/06/2020 09:26

Nothing like a 'feminist' applauding a man for speaking over women. Angry

Daniel Radcliffe responds to J.K Rowling's tweets on gender identity
ValkyrieCain · 09/06/2020 09:26

@PaddlingPoolAgain

ValkyrieCain Why does accepting that my sex is female make me cis gender ? They missed the bit where you are assigned a gender role based on your sex. Which is observed, not assigned. What am I if I accept I am female, but don't agree with the gender sterotypes Im expected to live up to?
I agree. I am just saying the Trevor Project seem to acknowledge that male and female are two different things. None of the rest of it makes a huge amount of sense.
Lifeinthelastlane · 09/06/2020 09:26

I hope JKR can stay strong. She has many, many silent supporters.
It's such a badly planned campaign overall. Think of how supportive we would be of trans rights, a group facing oppression etc, if they went by the idea of being transwomen and transmen, with unique needs, rather than claiming to be women and men.

mummmy2017 · 09/06/2020 09:27

Funny how any transwomen who want a child require the input from a female.
You know one of the people who have periods and the necessary physical equipment to carry a baby for nine months.
Many females undergo IVF or if they can find a surrogate follow that path, some will use adoption but anyone with half a brain cell half knows that only a female , woman can in the end have a baby.

ComDummings · 09/06/2020 09:27

Straight men like DR will parrot ‘transwomen are women’ but if you ask them if they’d have sex with a transwoman the answer is always no. Why is that? 🤔
When they find out that actually most transwomen still have a penis then that really shocks them. But they’re being literally violent for not wanting to fuck them, right?

DancelikeEmmaGoldman · 09/06/2020 09:28

There are a lot of comments on here which come across as prejudiced, unkind, inhumane - NOT as fighting for women's rights or even relevant to women's rights.

It’s almost as if women were people, with uncomfortable emotions like anger and frustration. I’m sure if we could only be nicer we wouldn’t need to be still struggling to be seen and treated as fully human.

Be good, dear girls, and let who will, be clever.

Heartlake · 09/06/2020 09:29

So... in all seriousness, I have some very good friends who have said to me TWAW and in me making a few noises about , "yeah, but what about natal sex" and the like they have looked at me like I am a raging transphobe. These are good friends, people that know me well.

Like all things, people will never be educated if by our actions they feel affronted and on edge (even if what we are saying is true). Can anyone help with any 'acceptable' conversation starters to help the woke people in our friends and families start to come down on the side of biological sex and take it from there? Because I struggle with this.

Pinklynx · 09/06/2020 09:29

I wonder how many TW are going to play opposite DR as his love interest. Or any other woke male actor. Let's see them put their money where their mouth is.

If he's all for equality, why am I not hearing him thundering about women getting equal air time in major movies. Equal pay. No sexual harassment.

Or is just the fashionable causes he's interested in.

What about honour killings. FGM. The experience of women in some countries where they need a male relative's permission to work, to have a passport. It goes on and on.

It also amazes me how TRAs who supposedly identify as women use such misogynistic abuse towards women they don't agree with. Could it be they just want to cherry pick the reality of womanhood?

Kit19 · 09/06/2020 09:29

I really am getting to that point @Michelleoftheresistance

One of young female doctors I follow on Twitter was RT outrage this morning that an obs/gyn conference only had Male speakers and how sexist the medical world was

Just after tweeting a lot of support for DR & hate for JK

She genuinely can’t see a link between the two. I’m fed up of arguing with stupid

merrymouse · 09/06/2020 09:31

why is there no reference to transmen[?] because they don't get such a bashing online as transwomen do.

How is that relevant to what JKR said?

Enderthedragon · 09/06/2020 09:31

There are a lot of comments on here which come across as prejudiced, unkind, inhumane - NOT as fighting for women's rights or even relevant to women's rights.

Women you are allowed to fight for your rights if you must, but the least you can do is be nice about it. And you just definitely make sure that at no point do you hurt the feelings of a man.

Right, got it Hmm

thisisawful · 09/06/2020 09:32

It’s almost as if women were people, with uncomfortable emotions like anger and frustration. I’m sure if we could only be nicer we wouldn’t need to be still struggling to be seen and treated as fully human You can have uncomfortable emotions without burdening others with them or being prejudiced, unkind, inhumane, though. This applies equally to men and women. How can you hope to be seen and treated as fully human if you don't show others the same thing?

merrymouse · 09/06/2020 09:33

if they went by the idea of being transwomen and transmen, with unique needs, rather than claiming to be women and men.

That is how other groups have fought for equal rights.

ExTwitter · 09/06/2020 09:35

I wonder if this statement will still be the case when a Transwoman hits on him?
I bet he'd soon learn what is and isn't a woman very very quickly.
