Daniel Radcliffe responds to JK Rowling’s tweets: “Transgender women are women. Any statement to the contrary erases the identity and dignity of transgender people”

Daniel Radcliffe Responds to J.K. Rowling’s Tweets on Gender Identity – The Trevor Project

FULL STATEMENT

I realize that certain press outlets will probably want to paint this as in-fighting between J.K. Rowling and myself, but that is really not what this is about, nor is it what’s important right now. While Jo is unquestionably responsible for the course my life has taken, as someone who has been honored to work with and continues to contribute to The Trevor Project for the last decade, and just as a human being, I feel compelled to say something at this moment.

Transgender women are women. Any statement to the contrary erases the identity and dignity of transgender people and goes against all advice given by professional health care associations who have far more expertise on this subject matter than either Jo or I. According to The Trevor Project, 78% of transgender and nonbinary youth reported being the subject of discrimination due to their gender identity. It’s clear that we need to do more to support transgender and nonbinary people, not invalidate their identities, and not cause further harm.

I am still learning how to be a better ally, so if you want to join me in learning more about transgender and nonbinary identities check out The Trevor Project’s Guide to Being an Ally to Transgender and Nonbinary Youth. It’s an introductory educational resource that covers a wide range of topics, including the differences between sex and gender, and shares best practices on how to support transgender and nonbinary people.

To all the people who now feel that their experience of the books has been tarnished or diminished, I am deeply sorry for the pain these comments have caused you. I really hope that you don’t entirely lose what was valuable in these stories to you. If these books taught you that love is the strongest force in the universe, capable of overcoming anything; if they taught you that strength is found in diversity, and that dogmatic ideas of pureness lead to the oppression of vulnerable groups; if you believe that a particular character is trans, nonbinary, or gender fluid, or that they are gay or bisexual; if you found anything in these stories that resonated with you and helped you at any time in your life — then that is between you and the book that you read, and it is sacred. And in my opinion nobody can touch that. It means to you what it means to you and I hope that these comments will not taint that too much.

Love always,
Dan

DR on marriage

"He also added that his parents are an inspiration for him when it does come to thinking about marriage. "I think my mum and dad have an incredibly equal marriage," he said. "Sometimes, when I watch American dating TV shows, like The Millionaire Matchmaker, I know the men on there get told nothing but wonderful things about themselves all the time but I watch them, and I’m like, 'How are you speaking to a woman like this?!'"

A woman or a transwoman Dan? What might the difference be do you think?

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 09/06/2020 08:46

I guess it's different when the woman is old enough that there's no chance of you wanting to get into her pants, eh, Dan?

DickKerrLadies · 09/06/2020 08:46

I especially like how he assumes that JR has no expertise on the subject. Has he spoke to her?

Alltheprettyseahorses · 09/06/2020 08:47

Why is this male responding to a tweet about women menstruating by saying transwomen are women? Why is he waffling about expertise when incorrectly telling women what women are? Daniel Radcliffe is cancelled. He can enjoy his little woke pats on the head but the power is with us.

OhHolyJesus · 09/06/2020 08:47

Rupert Grint has a baby daughter.

Have a word Rupert. Daniel appears to have lost touch with reality.

Dances · 09/06/2020 08:47

I thought he was gay...? Not that it makes any difference. I expect Terf in the sheets still applies...

littlbrowndog · 09/06/2020 08:47

More from women on twitte4 below

Oh God, Daniel Radcliffe, you twerp. She said women have periods. Jesus Christ. Fetch the ducking stool.

YourVagesty · 09/06/2020 08:48

What a little turncoat wanker.

Talk about ingratitude. There was no need for this whatsoever.

BaronessRadishFemish · 09/06/2020 08:49

Can you not see a creeping of males creating new women’s world records..

A fine, new collective noun is coined!

A creeping of males - excellent!

ItsSummer · 09/06/2020 08:49

Transwomen are women, but women are cis women.

Go figure.

Always about transwomen, never about transmen (who are women).

Still, we needed a man to tell us what women are 🙄

JunoJigglewick · 09/06/2020 08:50

I'm really saddened that JKR's tweets are being misrepresented and twisted so much. You can require visibility of sex and for people to be clear what sex they are talking about when it comes to biological functions. And it does not erase gender or feelings.

I am sick of men thundering in on self proclaimed white horses, correcting what women say and apologising for what they said.

If transwomen are women, why can't I (a biological woman) call myself a woman? Why do i have to be a ciswoman?

DR has absolutely no right to apologise for what JKR said. Unless she is his mother or has said that she speaks for him, he is utterly irrelevant in terms of policing her words.

I despise the idea that someone can claim to be a woman because they "feel" they are female. Because it is impossible to feel the same. You are a woman because of your biology, physical and chromosomally. Because of your biological functions. And women have been oppressed and repressed because of these.

I agree that gender stereotypes are damaging but we don't throw sex under the bus in order to accept a wider spectrum of gender.

DR has absolutely no role or right here to chastise JKR for her very clear and non violent words. He has given the all clear to attack her further and he should be ashamed of himself for that.

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 09/06/2020 08:51

My gut feeling that an anime convention could be succinctly described as "a creeping of males" has certainly been reinforced by observing the behavior of TRAs on Twitter!

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 09/06/2020 08:52

@DisobedientHamster - I didn't mean the fact that women menstruate, I meant her tongue-in-cheek comment here:
" ‘People who menstruate.’ I’m sure there used to be a word for those people. Someone help me out. Wumben? Wimpund? Woomud?"
That's poking the bear [TRAs] a little.

Sailfin · 09/06/2020 08:53

Smug twat.

No, Daniel, trans "women" are MEN - that is why they have an XY pair of chromosomes.

I can't believe what we are up against.

Dances · 09/06/2020 08:53

This tweet nails it. Males telling women off for talking about menstruation being FEMALE. You couldn't make this shit up

@mathanxiety

It's not entirely because he owes everything to JKR that he is being picked apart here.

It's also because he is a man telling a woman what she can and can't say about her own lived experience.

This, with enormous brass bells on.

He has a bloody nerve.

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 09/06/2020 08:58

What an absolute knob that man is. And completely devoid of any acting talent too. Reading his words is making me so angry. And I'm willing to bet £ that Emma Watson (also such a crap actor) will pop along with a similar statement and matching bloody t shirt soon ...

As soon as you say TWAW you've dismissed the struggles of every biological woman everywhere. Generally I can see past a political difference of opinion with ease but on this I can't budge and if you really believe this statement and are happy with the consequences to women, I can honestly say I'd question the friendship (and intelligence of) I have with that person. It's too big a deal not to.

JK Rowling is utterly awesome and a magnificent role model to kids but especially young girls.

CaraDune · 09/06/2020 08:58

Sadly, this doesn't surprise me.

Man feels he can apologise for woman's views. (Male ownership - he starred in her films therefore he feels he has a stake in this).

Man tells women what they are and are not allowed to think about being a woman (One of Bewildereness's rules).

Man somehow reaches straight for TWAW rather than the (still wrong but at least relevant) TMAM (showing yet again he knows that he's supposed to centre penis-holders at all time).

I've read a number of interviews with him over the years, and to be honest he's always come across to me as a bit shallow and extremely self absorbed. Which is fair enough - actors frequently come across that way - I watch them for how good they are at acting not for how nuanced their intellectual views are (haven't watched enough of his output as an adult to form an opinion on his acting).

As for the good 'old "inclusionary in the tweets, exclusionary in the sheets" phenomenon, I think many wokebeards would think of themselves as totally internally consistent on this one (no idea of where DR stands on this one). Cynical old bat that I am, I've observed that the primary subcategory of "womanhood" as far as they're concerned is the division into fuckable/unfuckable. That continues unchanged by TWAW, with the caveat that the TW somehow, quite by chance, end up in one of the two primary categories. They don't feel obliged to wonder why they're in the unfuckable category, because the unfuckable category is not worthy of thought in their minds.

Heygirlheyboy · 09/06/2020 08:59

Have a word, Rupert

Love it Grin

KaronAVyrus · 09/06/2020 09:02

Typical male behaviour - speaking on behalf of women.

HollySideEyes · 09/06/2020 09:02

I always thought he seemed quite intelligent :(

WendyHoused · 09/06/2020 09:02

I’ve always thought he was a lovely young man with his head screwed on right. I think his parents did a sterling job keeping him “normal” in an insane environment.

I’m so disappointed in him. If he were really responding to JKR’s words he’d say TMAM. Instead, he’s responding to social media outrage and protecting his career.

GrouchyKiwi · 09/06/2020 09:03

At least the BBC article on this devotes most of its time to JKR's actual tweets, so anyone reading it can see what she really said.

Unfortunately I think most will just read the headline.

Focusanddetermination · 09/06/2020 09:03

Looks like Jonathan Ross just backtracked on his statement supporting her too. Cowards all these men.

CaraDune · 09/06/2020 09:03

And yes, I am prepared to bet 4 hotels on Mayfair (don't have enough real money to bet) that Emma Watson will be along to say the same thing any time now. She's always been a fan of the "my feminism will be inclusive of men, or it will be nothing" type of feminism (which, in fairness, in an industry run by men where your marketability depends on being attractive to men, is a pretty shrewd move).
