Daniel Radcliffe responds to JK Rowling’s tweets: “Transgender women are women. Any statement to the contrary erases the identity and dignity of transgender people”

Daniel Radcliffe Responds to J.K. Rowling’s Tweets on Gender Identity – The Trevor Project

FULL STATEMENT

I realize that certain press outlets will probably want to paint this as in-fighting between J.K. Rowling and myself, but that is really not what this is about, nor is it what’s important right now. While Jo is unquestionably responsible for the course my life has taken, as someone who has been honored to work with and continues to contribute to The Trevor Project for the last decade, and just as a human being, I feel compelled to say something at this moment.

Transgender women are women. Any statement to the contrary erases the identity and dignity of transgender people and goes against all advice given by professional health care associations who have far more expertise on this subject matter than either Jo or I. According to The Trevor Project, 78% of transgender and nonbinary youth reported being the subject of discrimination due to their gender identity. It’s clear that we need to do more to support transgender and nonbinary people, not invalidate their identities, and not cause further harm.

I am still learning how to be a better ally, so if you want to join me in learning more about transgender and nonbinary identities check out The Trevor Project’s Guide to Being an Ally to Transgender and Nonbinary Youth. It’s an introductory educational resource that covers a wide range of topics, including the differences between sex and gender, and shares best practices on how to support transgender and nonbinary people.

To all the people who now feel that their experience of the books has been tarnished or diminished, I am deeply sorry for the pain these comments have caused you. I really hope that you don’t entirely lose what was valuable in these stories to you. If these books taught you that love is the strongest force in the universe, capable of overcoming anything; if they taught you that strength is found in diversity, and that dogmatic ideas of pureness lead to the oppression of vulnerable groups; if you believe that a particular character is trans, nonbinary, or gender fluid, or that they are gay or bisexual; if you found anything in these stories that resonated with you and helped you at any time in your life — then that is between you and the book that you read, and it is sacred. And in my opinion nobody can touch that. It means to you what it means to you and I hope that these comments will not taint that too much.

Love always,
Dan

Daniel, HOW are TW women? What magic spell turns a man into a woman??

Penisus girlyus? I've suggested that perhaps one is meant to know the difference because the "female penis" has a pink ribbon tied around it before.

thereplycamefromanchorage · 09/06/2020 08:34

@aesopfable, exactly, it's always about whether transwomen are women - transmen never come into it. Which is quite telling really - once again male bodied people's experiences are being centred.l, the rest don't mind. DR is free to express an opinion, but my it's disappointing that he chose to express it this way

merrymouse · 09/06/2020 08:34

I'm not sure why the response is TWAW. If anything there should be some kind of statement about TM and menstruation since it affects them and not TW.

Hadn't spotted that - transmen feel attacked, so DR flies in to support transwomen!

It's almost as though there is something about transmen that makes them less important!

Can't quite put my finger on it... sox? sax?

Confused
thereplycamefromanchorage · 09/06/2020 08:35

*the rest don't matter.

Tonz · 09/06/2020 08:35

overworked Love your post.

Lordfrontpaw · 09/06/2020 08:35

@ChasingTrams

What about erasing the dignity and identity of women, eh Dan? Doesn't that matter?
Yup. He is looking at his Hollywood career and I think his girlfriend (a woman) is an actor too?

Another spineless weasel.

PurpleHoodie · 09/06/2020 08:36

Six?

Yes, Radcliffe’s response proves sex matters, because the female sex doesn’t feature at all in his response despite the female sex being the content of Rowling’s original tweet.

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 09/06/2020 08:37

Cox. If you have one then your feelings matter.

merrymouse · 09/06/2020 08:37

I'm so disappointed no-one associated with the films has stood up for JK so far.

The problem is that they haven't all made millions and its a tough time for anyone working in that industry.

I would like to see some politicians standing up for her.

BreastedBoobilyToTheStairs · 09/06/2020 08:38

TMAM would indeed have been the appropriate response if anyone was genuinely upset about Rowling's tweet about menstruation. It isn't because they know bloody well tranmen are female and thus automatically shift the focus to the half of the human race whose feelings they think matter.

This, absolutely. I one ever remembers about the transmen when they're lecturing though.

The fact he apologises for pain her words have caused but then fails to acknowledge the despicable misogynistic abuse she's been receiving is completely unforgivable. Disagreeing on the politics is one thing, but there is no excuse at all not to condemn the disgusting language people are using towards her.

ATomeOfOnesOwn · 09/06/2020 08:38

But he chose not to call off the attack dogs, make a plea for civility or defend her as a person. So in the interests of his own profile he threw her under the bus
Yy exactly this. He knew she was getting piled on and knew his statement would add to it and encourage it. He's a disappointing coward.

Twitter today’s

Wow it all belongs to Daniel eh?

Women's right to define themselves + their boundaries. The meaning + significance of a series of books he didn't write. The final say on the moral worth of the woman who launched his career but dared speak her truth.

All Daniel's to give away.

PurpleHoodie · 09/06/2020 08:39

As acknowledged by John Boyega in his impassioned speech the other day. At least he had guts to call it out.

MoltenLasagne · 09/06/2020 08:39

I cannot believe the audacity of speaking for another person who has clearly stated their views, let alone when that person is one you owe so much to. Does DR believe that women's opinions must be signed off by the men in their life?

PurpleHoodie · 09/06/2020 08:40

(That was a response to midnights post)

OhHolyJesus · 09/06/2020 08:41

Ally in the tweets, terf in the sheets

Exactly this Primal GrinGrinGrin

From Twitter. A small selection of the genteel disagreements directed at JKR by the ladies of Twitter. It’s almost as if they all have something in common ...

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 09/06/2020 08:42

Is "I apologize on the behalf of a woman who doesn't agree with me" meant to be some sort of modern day version of coverture?

DancelikeEmmaGoldman · 09/06/2020 08:42

Sorry. Image.

I was just going to mention John Boyega. Publicly admitted he was prepared to sacrifice his career to do what was right. Radcliffe could learn a thing or two from that proud man.

Yes, this is exactly what outrages me. What does he think gives him the right to do this? His almighty penis and testicles of objectivity? FFS.
Mumsnut · 09/06/2020 08:44

If the books are so racist and JKR so transphobic, maybe you should donate to
Trevor all your further earnings from the films, Daniel.
