Daniel Radcliffe responds to JK Rowling’s tweets: “Transgender women are women. Any statement to the contrary erases the identity and dignity of transgender people”

Daniel Radcliffe Responds to J.K. Rowling’s Tweets on Gender Identity – The Trevor Project

FULL STATEMENT

I realize that certain press outlets will probably want to paint this as in-fighting between J.K. Rowling and myself, but that is really not what this is about, nor is it what’s important right now. While Jo is unquestionably responsible for the course my life has taken, as someone who has been honored to work with and continues to contribute to The Trevor Project for the last decade, and just as a human being, I feel compelled to say something at this moment.

Transgender women are women. Any statement to the contrary erases the identity and dignity of transgender people and goes against all advice given by professional health care associations who have far more expertise on this subject matter than either Jo or I. According to The Trevor Project, 78% of transgender and nonbinary youth reported being the subject of discrimination due to their gender identity. It’s clear that we need to do more to support transgender and nonbinary people, not invalidate their identities, and not cause further harm.

I am still learning how to be a better ally, so if you want to join me in learning more about transgender and nonbinary identities check out The Trevor Project’s Guide to Being an Ally to Transgender and Nonbinary Youth. It’s an introductory educational resource that covers a wide range of topics, including the differences between sex and gender, and shares best practices on how to support transgender and nonbinary people.

To all the people who now feel that their experience of the books has been tarnished or diminished, I am deeply sorry for the pain these comments have caused you. I really hope that you don’t entirely lose what was valuable in these stories to you. If these books taught you that love is the strongest force in the universe, capable of overcoming anything; if they taught you that strength is found in diversity, and that dogmatic ideas of pureness lead to the oppression of vulnerable groups; if you believe that a particular character is trans, nonbinary, or gender fluid, or that they are gay or bisexual; if you found anything in these stories that resonated with you and helped you at any time in your life — then that is between you and the book that you read, and it is sacred. And in my opinion nobody can touch that. It means to you what it means to you and I hope that these comments will not taint that too much.

Love always,
Dan

The incredible he's a white privileged male, that's exactly what they do. Always have always will. Thanks woman for making me successful, now come to this cliff edge so I can push you off, because my voice will now be the only voice on the matter, quick let me wave my willy at you whilst I push you over the edge, it'll be fun....

Wow I've had too much wine for 8pm 😂

CaraDune · 09/06/2020 20:08

Don't think you're allowed to do that tobee. At some earlier stage in the whole shitfest, someone on the TRA side said "no returns" (in the manner of my then 8-year-old) so only some people are allowed to identify into some identies, not everyone and not all identities. Though as far as I can tell they do argue a bit among themselves as to which identities are okay... transabled, transrace, trans-species. Very confusing.

Ova

Wow!

Diptheria23 · 09/06/2020 20:12

So, the original language JKR was commenting on "people who menstruate" clearly aimed to be inclusive of trans men, i.e. female bodied people who menstruate but do not identify as women. So how come Radcliffe makes no mention of the rights and identities of trans men? Apparently his only concern is for the feelings of trans women, i.e. people born male. Deeply, and apparently unconsciously, misogynist.

CaraDune · 09/06/2020 20:13

Oh my, Fanta.

Why is the first thing that springs to my mind the "To be shocked that this was every okay?" thread in trending at the moment.

I need some help here because I feel I am missing something. 100 per cent seriously, have I misunderstood something key:

A person is born either male or female. This is determined by chromosomes and so they are one of two sexes - male or female. An adult male is called a man and an adult female is called a woman.

Some people don’t identify with their sex. For example, a man identifies as a woman. They identify their gender as female and want to be recognised as a woman.

I understand that this must be really hard and they should be recognised as a transwoman or a transman. However, you can’t change biology, and women are still women / men and still men. Cis seems to be a made up word?! I don’t identify as that, I’m just a woman?!

So that’s my understanding / beliefs...

What exactly the debate? Are trans groups saying that transwomen are just as much women as biological women and so biology should just be ignored? Sex isn’t relevant / gender conquers all?

It just seems mental, I’m totally flummoxed that there are people who believe, for example, that a man who identifies as a woman, should be able to compete against them at sports, for example. But there is a PHYSICAL advantage?! What else does this ‘equality’ include?

So JK Rowling has defended the reality of sex and opposers are saying what ? I just don’t understand the argument...

Seriously, what am I missing??

TSSDNCOP · 09/06/2020 20:16

Silly man.

Picture some craven, profit hungry, utterly unscrupulous studio executive sitting by the pool in Bel Air right now thinking "I could corner an untapped market with all these wokesters by casting that Potter bloke with a TRanswoman actor in the next big rom-com."

PrincessConsuelaVaginaHammock · 09/06/2020 20:19

@MockersGuidedByTheScience

Q: What is it with Leung, Lynch etc jumping on the bandwagon?

A: Not wanting to be blackballed on LaLa land.

You better get out there and signal that virtue or you'll never eat lunch in this town again. Harvey will see to it.

Do you think? I was wondering if either of them were really high profile enough to have had their hands forced. Lynch does a lot of vegan activism, I don't know how far gender and trans issues have taken root in that movement.
BaronessFloralBunting · 09/06/2020 20:20

@DancelikeEmmaGoldman

DameFloral, I would pay money to read this.

“ A forefront chapter will be added to Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone where Professor Snape asks all students to say their preferred pronouns on the first day of class. Which he goes out of his way not to use. “Miss Longbottom, I think not!”*

Dame? 🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣
hypernormal · 09/06/2020 20:21

Haven't read the whole thread (sorry, it's long), but do you think it would help if we all wrote to the Trevor Project where this is published and ask them to take it down? The charity is supposedly "providing crisis intervention and suicide prevention services to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer & questioning (LGBTQ) young people under 25." - well, what about young lesbians who read something like that and feel utterly despondent by it? Just a thought. I hope some day people see how incredibly offensive this statement is and I hope this is the end of Radcliffe's career. Prime example of a misogynistic male 'feminist'.

CaraDune · 09/06/2020 20:21

What exactly the debate? Are trans groups saying that transwomen are just as much women as biological women and so biology should just be ignored? Sex isn’t relevant / gender conquers all?

Yup, this is exactly what they're saying.

Hannah Mouncey, Aussie rules footballer

Karen White, held on remand in a women's prison where he sexually assaulted two of the female inmates.

Someone with a better memory for names can remind me which of the Labour leadership candidates said she had no problem whatsoever with a male-bodied convicted sex offender being held in a women's prison, because that person said they identified as a woman, and "transwomen are women". (I think it was Lisa Nandy)

They really are meaning you to take this completely and utterly literally, not as a metaphor for feeling uncomfortable about your sexed body.

They claim sex is a social construct but gender identity is real.

Welcome to the twilight zone.

And they want to re-write legislation to enshrine all this in law.

CaraDune · 09/06/2020 20:22

Sorry, that was to @Justjoshin22

HarryHarry · 09/06/2020 20:25

I’m British but live in Canada and all the women I know are all “Fuck TERFs!” about JKR and I am genuinely confused - I mean, really, really baffled - as to what she said that was so wrong. She, like most of us, supports trans people and their right to live as they choose. She just doesn’t agree with the other woman-hating stuff. What’s unreasonable or offensive about that?! I feel like I’ve gone into an alternate universe where I don’t understand anything. Why do so many people accept trans ideology so completely and unquestioningly?

Blackdoggotmytonguestill · 09/06/2020 20:27

I’m British and I live in Canada. There is a considerable cohort of women that are not in agreement with the TWAW ideology. Get on the radfem networks.

Lamahaha · 09/06/2020 20:28

Newdadtogirl I like his clarity when he says, "Transgender women are women.

Then I'm sure you'll be perfectly happy when your daughter turns 13 and is expected to share the communal shower with 50 year old transwomen with erect penises.

Shedbuilder · 09/06/2020 20:36

You're not missing anything, JustJoshin, you've got it spot on. And so now do you see how anti-women this is? And can you see how we're worried about women's rights and sexism and so on. Because in a world where anyone can 'be' a legally recognised woman even if they've got a dick and balls and a beard and work on an oil rig, there's no sexism — because sex doesn't technically exist. No male and female sport. No women's rights, because there's no such thing as a woman as defined in traditional terms. We won't be able to monitor equalities issues — pay, educational achievement etc — because we'll all be one. We could have a Parliament made up of 50:50 women and men — but if 40 of those women are actually men, then what? Women will effectively have disappeared. There'll be no lesbians, because XX-born lesbians will be expected to sleep with XY transwomen because they're both 'women'... You can take it on from here.

JigglypuffsCaptor · 09/06/2020 20:40

Harry Harry this peaked me this topic. Hating a successful woman for stating a simple biological fact. It's ridiculous, and the woke are going along with it now.

It's not cool to question others line of thought anymore to do so is "phobic" , it logical to just follow like sheep and pander to the group that shouts the loudest. You know us women used to be that group, and just, just as we were approaching the level playing field, they kicked us back again.

It's absolutely fine that girls in other lands outside this white western woke bubble, are seen as women the minute they menstruate.

Women's menstruation is very much linked to how they are treated by other societies, they are cast out, dirty, shunned away during menstruation or even married off because of its presence. Because that's a dirty woman's thing to do, because only women menstruate, menstruation = womanhood.

We used to think menstruation = woman too in this land but no, not now we are people who menstruate.

😂 I mean it's fucking laughable, and then they say other cultures are "behind in their thinking" or "behind the times"

Fuck at least under all that abhorrent barbaric behaviour that needs to end, they recognise biological norms. Adult females who menstruate = woman. 🤦🏻‍♀️

MrsKCastle · 09/06/2020 20:40

What exactly the debate? Are trans groups saying that transwomen are just as much women as biological women and so biology should just be ignored? Sex isn’t relevant / gender conquers all?

This is it, exactly. The reason it's hard to understand is that it really is completely crazy thinking.

Many transactivists believe that sex is
a) not clear cut and binary
b) not the reason for discrimination against women
c) very difficult to tell anyway
d) not relevant or important

At the same time, they conflate sex and gender, by demanding the right to change their birth certificates, passport and other records that indicate their sex.

OldCrone · 09/06/2020 20:40

For anyone who didn't click on FantaOra's links, this is Sam Brinton, founder of the Trevor Project. I doubt they care about lesbians hypernormal.

Sam looks like a lighting designer I know. Those shoes are ugly.

Justjoshin22 · 09/06/2020 20:45

@CaraDune thank you. I was posing a genuine question as I cannot believe that biology is being questioned. Jesus. As a mother of 2 daughters - this scares me shitless.

Also, poor bloody JKR. I know she’s well able to defend herself but it seems as though most public figures speaking out are against her. I mean, WTF?!

if someone told me they were a transwoman, I’d respect that. But, what would that respect look like? would I be comfortable with a male bodied trans person using female sharing a single sex changing room with my small daughter? No. Would I want to compete in a sport against a transwoman? No... would I support violent male bodied transwomen in female prisons... no. So, does that mean I am bigoted? Because I do understand that for a transperson, NOT being able to do any of that stuff would feel like discrimination because they identify as a different gender than their sex... but sex DOES matter.

TooOldForSims · 09/06/2020 20:45

Evanna Lynch has spoken out now and she is 'deeply saddened' about JKR's remarks...

Justjoshin22 · 09/06/2020 20:48

@Shedbuilder god when you read that in black and white. Makes you want to cry.
