Daniel Radcliffe responds to JK Rowling’s tweets: “Transgender women are women. Any statement to the contrary erases the identity and dignity of transgender people”

Daniel Radcliffe Responds to J.K. Rowling’s Tweets on Gender Identity – The Trevor Project

FULL STATEMENT

I realize that certain press outlets will probably want to paint this as in-fighting between J.K. Rowling and myself, but that is really not what this is about, nor is it what’s important right now. While Jo is unquestionably responsible for the course my life has taken, as someone who has been honored to work with and continues to contribute to The Trevor Project for the last decade, and just as a human being, I feel compelled to say something at this moment.

Transgender women are women. Any statement to the contrary erases the identity and dignity of transgender people and goes against all advice given by professional health care associations who have far more expertise on this subject matter than either Jo or I. According to The Trevor Project, 78% of transgender and nonbinary youth reported being the subject of discrimination due to their gender identity. It’s clear that we need to do more to support transgender and nonbinary people, not invalidate their identities, and not cause further harm.

I am still learning how to be a better ally, so if you want to join me in learning more about transgender and nonbinary identities check out The Trevor Project’s Guide to Being an Ally to Transgender and Nonbinary Youth. It’s an introductory educational resource that covers a wide range of topics, including the differences between sex and gender, and shares best practices on how to support transgender and nonbinary people.

To all the people who now feel that their experience of the books has been tarnished or diminished, I am deeply sorry for the pain these comments have caused you. I really hope that you don’t entirely lose what was valuable in these stories to you. If these books taught you that love is the strongest force in the universe, capable of overcoming anything; if they taught you that strength is found in diversity, and that dogmatic ideas of pureness lead to the oppression of vulnerable groups; if you believe that a particular character is trans, nonbinary, or gender fluid, or that they are gay or bisexual; if you found anything in these stories that resonated with you and helped you at any time in your life — then that is between you and the book that you read, and it is sacred. And in my opinion nobody can touch that. It means to you what it means to you and I hope that these comments will not taint that too much.

Love always,
Dan

Did we find out how he knew his daughter was a girl?

Was he not very bright?

Male pattern stupidity?

RufustheLanglovingreindeer · 09/06/2020 19:13

I knew I should have put the little fucker in Slytherin

Nice Grin

JigglypuffsCaptor · 09/06/2020 19:17

Well Daniel displayed a true act of privileged white male today didn't he, stabbed the woman in the back who gave him a platform a voice and wealth ever beyond his imagination, shouted her down and told her to shutup. 🙄 Well done Daniel, my hero....🤮

Datun · 09/06/2020 19:23

JigglypuffsCaptor

Well said.

tipsyandtim · 09/06/2020 19:29

Evanna Lynch (Luna Lovegood actress) has tweeted in support of trans also, has anyone seen it? She’s getting unhappy replies though because she’s basically says she still likes/respects JKR just doesn’t agree with her opinion. Seems like there’s only ‘one way’ on twitter and no allowance for nuance or accepting many things are complex.

"Women's surrender must be abject or it will be nothing."
SoberCurious · 09/06/2020 19:37

Urrrrgh this has really irritated me!
It's like a white person telling a black person that white people can be black if they say they are. Just. Fuck. Off. Daniel. Radcliffe!!!!! 😡🤯🤯🤯🤬🤬🤬

SoberCurious · 09/06/2020 19:38

Exactly @JigglypuffsCaptor !!!

Lordfrontpaw · 09/06/2020 19:40

The people tweeting suppers for weasel are all youngish jobbing actors. Not wanting to be blackballed on LaLa land eh?

PirateWeasel · 09/06/2020 19:44

He's an imbecile. Just that. #IStandWithJo

Focusanddetermination · 09/06/2020 19:46

tipsyandtim as she's a woman they'll probably go after her in an aggressive way, maybe enough to peak trans her?

JigglypuffsCaptor · 09/06/2020 19:46

I'm in no mood for it, I got called a TERF today by a "friend" who couldn't argue with my logic on how a battle under the banner of "inclusive" risks the very women's rights we fought hard for. 🙄 I didn't rise to the TERF bating.

It's ok though I replied to her

"Look I've known you a long time, I think we should agree to disagree on this, you are a lovely person who menstruate, and perhaps I'm just being a woman. "

PirateWeasel · 09/06/2020 19:47

Also, what is it with Leung, Lynch etc jumping on the bandwagon?!? Are they ALL idiots or just mindless sheep?

BatShite · 09/06/2020 19:48

She’s getting unhappy replies though because she’s basically says she still likes/respects JKR just doesn’t agree with her opinion.

Sounds about right. Anything less than denouncing JK as the devil incarnate will be problematic.

Not really getting why so many are wading into it without actually acknowledging what JK actually said though? They seem to be under the impression she said something bad about trans people (specifically, transwomen?)

coconutpie · 09/06/2020 19:53

Hi all. First post on this board, wow what a revelation!!! Why hadn't I discovered this previously! (I tend to just stick to AIBU, etc). Could someone explain what it is that JK said? Is it that she said that transwomen cannot menstruate? That was my understanding. If so, why are people going nuts on Twitter over? Transwomen can't menstruate because they aren't biologically women. So what's the issue with what she said?!

By the way, I despise the term ciswoman. I am a woman, not some other made up term.

Wheezyfreespirit · 09/06/2020 19:55

I am not a cis woman, I am a woman. Always have been and always will be.

OvaHere · 09/06/2020 19:58

Just seen this on Twitter.

Maybe not the best month to talk about your racist friends. Will woke twitter now have a conundrum on their hands?

JigglypuffsCaptor · 09/06/2020 20:01

The past 48 hours have taught me I am a woman that's it W...O...M...A...N, anyone who thinks differently to me is just a person who menstruates, a person who does not menstruate, ciswoman or a trans-woman, man or trans-man. Whatever they want to be from those latter options is fine by me, because "woman" is obviously such a dirty word, dirty, dirty word.

It pissed them off so much to be stripped of woman, but they wanted inclusive language, they didn't see the importance of the word woman, so you don't get to have it now, it's my ball and I'm going home.

You live by the sword you die by the sword 🤷🏻‍♀️ not me and the other women's problem.

You're on your own people who do or do not menstruate. #notsorry.

MockersGuidedByTheScience · 09/06/2020 20:01

Q: What is it with Leung, Lynch etc jumping on the bandwagon?

A: Not wanting to be blackballed on LaLa land.

You better get out there and signal that virtue or you'll never eat lunch in this town again. Harvey will see to it.

7Days · 09/06/2020 20:01

Poor woke Twitter.

What to do, what to do.

I do agree with the sentiment tbf. It is ok to have different views about things,ok to disagree. It's this tribalism that has us like this.

Ah, you've stumbled upon the interesting paradox of the twitter storm.

JK pointed out only women menstruate. (Of course this has been wilfully misunderstood as saying in order to be a woman you have to menstruate).

The twitter shitstorm was that this was transexclusionary. And of course the line they should be taking (from their point of view) is to remind us all that "transmen are men" (no dissent allowed). Because transmen do menstruate. Because they have uteruses (and all the rest of the kit that goes with it) unless they've had really radical surgery, which most don't (because, frankly, having googled it myself it's horrendous and I don't blame them at all for this). Most stop at double mastectomies.

However, it is unintentionally revealling that instead the twitter storm (and Daniel Radcliffe) have focused instead on bleating "transwomen are women."

Because actually (as we all know) this is about the penis owners supporting other penis owners (because most transwomen don't have "bottom surgery" either - again, the results of surgery can be hugely variable and risky).

The noisy Twitter TRAs (as opposed to most trans people who're just quietly trying to get on with their own lives) are steeped in misogyny and homophobia.

TheIncredibleBookEatingManchot · 09/06/2020 20:04

I'm late to this but I am so angry at Radcliffe.

How dare he presume to speak on behalf of a woman?

How dare he take ownership of her work?

In a world where women's voices and women's books aren't valued as much as men's are I think it's important to remember that one of the most popular and loved books ever was written by a woman. She should not be erased from that.

Radcliffe's involvement in Harry Potter was only incidental to its success, another actor could have played Harry just as well as he did. Rowling invented the character and his story. She wrote the words. Harry Potter is hers. The achievement is hers.

Radcliffe does not have the right to take that away from her. He does not have the right to stamp all over her work.

tobee · 09/06/2020 20:05

So I've been thinking about this on and off all day. And Jonathan Ross being told by his daughters he can't comment on this. Because he's not trans.

We know how women aren't allowed to comment. Or define themselves. So the only thing I can do, to my logic, is say I'm identifying as a man. Who is now identifying as a trans woman. Then I can presumably comment?

FantaOra · 09/06/2020 20:06

I took a look at the Trevor Project employees and this familiar name and face shows up.

Sam Brinton Vice President of Advocacy and Government Affairs

Strangely he can talk to the Heritage Foundation without being castigated as a right wing evangelist in the way British women have been. Perhaps it's the clothes?

MockersGuidedByTheScience · 09/06/2020 20:07

Are Wossy's daughters trans?

If not, what gives them the right to comment?
