Daniel Radcliffe responds to JK Rowling’s tweets: “Transgender women are women. Any statement to the contrary erases the identity and dignity of transgender people”

Daniel Radcliffe Responds to J.K. Rowling’s Tweets on Gender Identity – The Trevor Project

FULL STATEMENT

I realize that certain press outlets will probably want to paint this as in-fighting between J.K. Rowling and myself, but that is really not what this is about, nor is it what’s important right now. While Jo is unquestionably responsible for the course my life has taken, as someone who has been honored to work with and continues to contribute to The Trevor Project for the last decade, and just as a human being, I feel compelled to say something at this moment.

Transgender women are women. Any statement to the contrary erases the identity and dignity of transgender people and goes against all advice given by professional health care associations who have far more expertise on this subject matter than either Jo or I. According to The Trevor Project, 78% of transgender and nonbinary youth reported being the subject of discrimination due to their gender identity. It’s clear that we need to do more to support transgender and nonbinary people, not invalidate their identities, and not cause further harm.

I am still learning how to be a better ally, so if you want to join me in learning more about transgender and nonbinary identities check out The Trevor Project’s Guide to Being an Ally to Transgender and Nonbinary Youth. It’s an introductory educational resource that covers a wide range of topics, including the differences between sex and gender, and shares best practices on how to support transgender and nonbinary people.

To all the people who now feel that their experience of the books has been tarnished or diminished, I am deeply sorry for the pain these comments have caused you. I really hope that you don’t entirely lose what was valuable in these stories to you. If these books taught you that love is the strongest force in the universe, capable of overcoming anything; if they taught you that strength is found in diversity, and that dogmatic ideas of pureness lead to the oppression of vulnerable groups; if you believe that a particular character is trans, nonbinary, or gender fluid, or that they are gay or bisexual; if you found anything in these stories that resonated with you and helped you at any time in your life — then that is between you and the book that you read, and it is sacred. And in my opinion nobody can touch that. It means to you what it means to you and I hope that these comments will not taint that too much.

Love always,
Dan

How am I mansplaining by stating I agree with Daniel? Which bit exactly do you think is mansplaining? Really?

Oh shucks.

Love the innocent face and head tilting.

Why do women have to explain and justify their opinions to men? Why can't they just accept they are wrong?

Wibble.

Hysterical crying (with laughter)

Enderthedragon · 09/06/2020 16:11

I think it's very telling that DR read JKR's tweets and thought 'right, I need to make sure I say Trans Women Are Women'.

Lordfrontpaw · 09/06/2020 16:12

Im not sure he wrote it anyway. I dent google the trevor project but that seems to be where it's coming from.

Shedbuilder · 09/06/2020 16:12

Whichever, for some reason no-one quite understands, of the two personx involved, it's the one who puts on a lot of weight in the months prior to the arrival of the infxnt whose career gets screwed. Nobody quite knows why this happens, but it's thought to be down to fat phobia, and the answer is probably more messaging round body positivity.

Yup, Newdadtoagirl, I hope you'll explain this to your daughter when she's old enough. Oh, and of course, she mustn't feel bad if a tall 'girl' with the beginnings of a beard and a surprisingly deep voice beats her in the 100m at school sports day — because it's all about competing and the best 'girl' will have won and life's not fair, is it? And remember to leave her a bit more than her brother in your will because she's unlikely to earn as much as him and she's likely to be more hard-up in retirement.

But's let forget all about that. It only affects half the population and they're not the important half, so who cares?

RedToothBrush · 09/06/2020 16:13

You think DR READ JKR's tweet? Or was told what it said and how to respond by a PR agent?

Ereshkigalangcleg · 09/06/2020 16:13

Just as an aside, my mom went to see a Harry Potter film and she said 'it's just people pointing sticks at each other'. She also described Lord of the Rings as 'just people running up hills'.

I'm with your mum on this Grin

@Datun

It would appear from the comments on the Times article that Daniel Radcliffe has fucked this up right royally.

By instinctively centering transwomen, he has made everyone assume that it is all about transwomen. And not the transmen that they were trying to pretend.

Lots of comments under that article asking what the hell this has to do with men, however they identify.

Unfortunately, Daniel in his enthusiasm to stick it to women, has made a rookie error of going on instinct and protecting male born individuals, rather than the official message of protecting women who identify as men.

He actually said the quiet part loud.

🤣

I love love love it when they say the quiet part out loud.
MockersGuidedByTheScience · 09/06/2020 16:17

Can the non-gender specific stork tell Majorie from Buster?

Michelleoftheresistance · 09/06/2020 16:17

Any statement to the contrary erases the identity and dignity of transgender people

Agreeing with Daniel erases the identity and dignity of female humans. You know, half the human race. Your mum and your daughter among them.

Guess you're ok with that. And with the whole male supremacism, homophobia, classism, ageism, disablism and racism involved in taking this political position?

Shedbuilder · 09/06/2020 16:20

And the woman who gave birth to the new baby, whether that turns out to be a girl or not, remember!

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 09/06/2020 16:20

Newdad can I ask you to consider a scenario ...

A few years into the future and your daughter is a teen and clothes shopping. She is using a ladies changing room to see which swimwear she prefers therefore in various stages of undress. There is no one else in there except her and a TW (who has not had any surgery so still has a penis) also trying on ladies clothes. How comfortable are you with this person in the next curtained off cubicle? A fully grown man removing his clothes literally inches away from your child. And potentially there is bugger all she can say or do regardless of how frightened or anxious she may feel?

CaraDune · 09/06/2020 16:20

Following up the advice to Newdad, And remember to leave her a bit more than her brother in your will because she's unlikely to earn as much as him and she's likely to be more hard-up in retirement.

Also remember to point out to your daughter (may not apply, no idea if you have a hereditary title or not) that if she has a younger brother, she can't inherit the title by becoming a transman, because for some reason the rules around changing gender don't apply when someone born without a penis wants a title which would otherwise pass to someone born with a penis.

Almost like the game was rigged. In favour of one group as delineated by their...

I want to say "sex" goddammit, but if I do that, Daniel Radcliffe will tell me off.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 09/06/2020 16:22

@Newdadtogirl - so you aren’t going to answer any of the questions people including me have asked you?

Datun · 09/06/2020 16:22

It's also a stroke of genius and very insightful that JK isn't responding. I hope she doesn't.

She should let this rage away, because it's not done yet.

MonsteraCheeseplant · 09/06/2020 16:22

The comments on The Times article are restoring my faith in humanity.

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 09/06/2020 16:23

By their amorphous feeling of ladyness. If they don't have one then don't worry, the world will do its best to bully them into pretending that they do.

Crystaltree · 09/06/2020 16:40

@Datun

It's also a stroke of genius and very insightful that JK isn't responding. I hope she doesn't.

She should let this rage away, because it's not done yet.

She's insulated because she has a shit ton of money and can do what she likes. It's the ordinary women that get thrown under the bus in this debate. Oh sorry did I say debate? Wash my mouth out with soap and water.
RedDogsBeg · 09/06/2020 16:43

Newdadtogirl I like his clarity when he says, "Transgender women are women.

Really, you sure about that? I would bet my entire worldly possessions on the fact that your child was not given birth to by a transwoman or that the person you had sex with to produce said child is a transwoman.

Oxyiz · 09/06/2020 16:45

Still fascinated to know why newdad reckons he has a daughter. He has no evidence for it whatsoever based on his logic.

HepzibahGreen · 09/06/2020 16:46

NRFT but it doesn't surprise me that a mega billionaire white man has decided for us what a woman is. After all, when girls and women can't be defined in law anymore and have no private spaces it won't affect him will it?
It will only affect those women in prison, in refuges, in staff changing rooms (Dan's never gonna be changing into an Asda uniform) in public hospitals..
He's got some nerve apologising for JK Rowling though! If I was her I'd smack his arse for him! Cheeky little git.

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 09/06/2020 16:47

"I liked this person's clarity when they said the earth was flat. Granted, it's not true, and most people are looking at them like they've just sprouted a second head, but both as a statement about what they believe and as an indication of how seriously they should be taken it was indeed very clear."

andyoldlabour · 09/06/2020 16:50

Newdadtogirl

If you really think that TWAW, do you also think that it is possible for a TW to give birth to a child or menstruate?
Would you even go one further as @kirstysnp and say a TW is a human female?
Do you think that many/any heterosexual males or lesbian females would be prepared to have a sexual relationship with a TW?
Do you think it fair, that a woman - adult human female - should be re-categorised to a subset called "cis-woman"?
Do you think that humans can change sex?

SirVixofVixHall · 09/06/2020 16:52

NewDad will you still be liking his “clarity” if your daughter decides out of the blue, at 16, that she is a boy, gets put on cross sex hormones and has a double mastectomy, all while still under 18 ? Even though she is on the autistic spectrum ,and almost certainly a lesbian who has absorbed the message that non-girly girls who fancy other girls must be boys ?
This has happened to a child we know by the way, I am not using hyperbole.

Lordfrontpaw · 09/06/2020 16:54

How does 'they' know that the child is a girl ffs?
