Daniel Radcliffe responds to JK Rowling’s tweets: “Transgender women are women. Any statement to the contrary erases the identity and dignity of transgender people”

Daniel Radcliffe Responds to J.K. Rowling’s Tweets on Gender Identity – The Trevor Project

FULL STATEMENT

I realize that certain press outlets will probably want to paint this as in-fighting between J.K. Rowling and myself, but that is really not what this is about, nor is it what’s important right now. While Jo is unquestionably responsible for the course my life has taken, as someone who has been honored to work with and continues to contribute to The Trevor Project for the last decade, and just as a human being, I feel compelled to say something at this moment.

Transgender women are women. Any statement to the contrary erases the identity and dignity of transgender people and goes against all advice given by professional health care associations who have far more expertise on this subject matter than either Jo or I. According to The Trevor Project, 78% of transgender and nonbinary youth reported being the subject of discrimination due to their gender identity. It’s clear that we need to do more to support transgender and nonbinary people, not invalidate their identities, and not cause further harm.

I am still learning how to be a better ally, so if you want to join me in learning more about transgender and nonbinary identities check out The Trevor Project’s Guide to Being an Ally to Transgender and Nonbinary Youth. It’s an introductory educational resource that covers a wide range of topics, including the differences between sex and gender, and shares best practices on how to support transgender and nonbinary people.

To all the people who now feel that their experience of the books has been tarnished or diminished, I am deeply sorry for the pain these comments have caused you. I really hope that you don’t entirely lose what was valuable in these stories to you. If these books taught you that love is the strongest force in the universe, capable of overcoming anything; if they taught you that strength is found in diversity, and that dogmatic ideas of pureness lead to the oppression of vulnerable groups; if you believe that a particular character is trans, nonbinary, or gender fluid, or that they are gay or bisexual; if you found anything in these stories that resonated with you and helped you at any time in your life — then that is between you and the book that you read, and it is sacred. And in my opinion nobody can touch that. It means to you what it means to you and I hope that these comments will not taint that too much.

Love always,
Dan

Interesting use of the word ‘antidote’. You mean the views here are poisonous?

BatShite · 09/06/2020 15:41

Newdadtogirl

Its great you like the clarity in the statement. Can you maybe explain why Daniel has replied to a tweet about transmen..with 'transwomen are women'? Finding that quite odd. Noone said anything about transwomen not being women.

An explanation of why on earth this was said as a reply to JK would really help me sort through the issue in my head. As someone who is very supportive of his random rambling statement, I thought you might be able to explain?

FFSFFSFFS · 09/06/2020 15:41

@Newdadtogirl

Given that the whole point was about "people" having periods - don't you think its odd that he didn't refer to transmen at all - why do you think that is?

Are you going to recommend to your daughter that she identifies out of female oppression? I would certainly recommend that because female oppression is a real pain in the arse.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 09/06/2020 15:41

@Newdadtogirl - can you explain how a fully biological male can be turned into a fully functioning biological female. How does the surgeon create a neovagina that will actually do the things that a real vagina does - self lubricating, self cleaning, stretching to allow the passage of a baby through it and then going back to its former size? Can they create a fully functional penis ant testes for your daughter if she decides she wants to be a man?

Would you be happy if your daughter decided she was Male and, as a pre-adolescent, wanted to go on puberty blockers that could set her on the path to a future reliant on hormones, and where the creation of a neophallus would require the removal of a large amount of flesh from her arm or leg, leaving her with horrendous scarring? What about when she demands a bilateral mastectomy - you’d be OK with her mutilationg herself in that way?

And how are women supposed to discuss issues that pertain to our biology and our oppression if we cannot even use the word that names us?

Datun · 09/06/2020 15:42

It would appear from the comments on the Times article that Daniel Radcliffe has fucked this up right royally.

By instinctively centering transwomen, he has made everyone assume that it is all about transwomen. And not the transmen that they were trying to pretend.

Lots of comments under that article asking what the hell this has to do with men, however they identify.

Unfortunately, Daniel in his enthusiasm to stick it to women, has made a rookie error of going on instinct and protecting male born individuals, rather than the official message of protecting women who identify as men.

He actually said the quiet part loud.

🤣

Newdadtogirl

How do you know your child is a girl? You're a new dad. Has he/she confirmed their gender to you yet?

Hahahaha genius level stoopid whoops!

Shame it’s not acting in front of a camera, no take 2s Grin

I was thinking the same thing. Way to be transphobic! I bet new dad and his gf also assume and use gendered pronouns
Dances · 09/06/2020 15:50

Do you have a share token Datun?

BaronessFloralBunting · 09/06/2020 15:51

This is the danger for TRAs drafting in celebrities without fully briefing them about staying on message. The TWAW branding slogan is just too effective. It lets the male rights focus slip every time.

Oxyiz · 09/06/2020 15:51

Yes I was about to ask why you assumed you had a daughter newdad.

I hope you're not raising your child with "she/her" pronouns or in any way referring to the biological sex it was born with.

Instead teach it that no matter what, its body will in no way influence its life.

RuffleCrow · 09/06/2020 15:52

How do you know you're a new dad to a girl, @Newdadtogirl ? Did something happen?! Grin

Datun · 09/06/2020 15:53

People don't seem to be grasping that 'people who menstruate' is meant to be protecting transmen.

Because Daniel Radcliffe didn't even mention them. 🙄

He forgot the No Debate bit though, what an amateur.
CaraDune · 09/06/2020 15:56

In answer to the question upthread as to how one becomes a dad. It's like this. When two personx love each other very much, they have a special sort of hug, the smerg meets the spegg and an infxnt results. Either that or the non-gender-specific stork brings them.

Whichever, for some reason no-one quite understands, of the two personx involved, it's the one who puts on a lot of weight in the months prior to the arrival of the infxnt whose career gets screwed. Nobody quite knows why this happens, but it's thought to be down to fat phobia, and the answer is probably more messaging round body positivity.

Newdadtogirl · 09/06/2020 16:01

How am I mansplaining by stating I agree with Daniel? Which bit exactly do you think is mansplaining? Really?

merrymouse · 09/06/2020 16:02

but it's thought to be down to fat phobia, and the answer is probably more messaging round body positivity.

Yes, I think this is where we are.

😂😂

merrymouse · 09/06/2020 16:04

The bit where you don't seem to have read any of the thread and haven't noticed that Daniel is randomly talking about transwomen when JK Rowling has been accused of disrespecting transmen.

TooOldForSims · 09/06/2020 16:04

Somebody needs to ask DR why he was blabbering on about transwomen when JKR's tweets were about transmen.

Datun · 09/06/2020 16:04

Well, you know what, the only people who seem to have a problem with what JKR said are TRAs on twitter.

And three or four celebrities.

Not a single unsupportive comment under any of the articles. And even the thread in AIBU is fully on board. Not something that would have happened a year or two back.

Plus the people who are talking about it seem much more informed. The word is spreading.

merrymouse · 09/06/2020 16:05

You are literally mansplaining the mansplaining. You just need one more man and you can go for the triple.

RedToothBrush · 09/06/2020 16:05

Wait What???!!!

No stork?

Its almost like victorian prudery making a comeback where 'polite society' has deemed it unacceptable to talk about sex; no one knows what men and women do to have sex, what homosexuals and homosexual sex is, and how babies are made.

TooOldForSims · 09/06/2020 16:05

And while they're on it they should ask him if he would ever sleep with or date a transwoman.
