Daniel Radcliffe responds to JK Rowling’s tweets: “Transgender women are women. Any statement to the contrary erases the identity and dignity of transgender people”

Daniel Radcliffe Responds to J.K. Rowling’s Tweets on Gender Identity – The Trevor Project

FULL STATEMENT

I realize that certain press outlets will probably want to paint this as in-fighting between J.K. Rowling and myself, but that is really not what this is about, nor is it what’s important right now. While Jo is unquestionably responsible for the course my life has taken, as someone who has been honored to work with and continues to contribute to The Trevor Project for the last decade, and just as a human being, I feel compelled to say something at this moment.

Transgender women are women. Any statement to the contrary erases the identity and dignity of transgender people and goes against all advice given by professional health care associations who have far more expertise on this subject matter than either Jo or I. According to The Trevor Project, 78% of transgender and nonbinary youth reported being the subject of discrimination due to their gender identity. It’s clear that we need to do more to support transgender and nonbinary people, not invalidate their identities, and not cause further harm.

I am still learning how to be a better ally, so if you want to join me in learning more about transgender and nonbinary identities check out The Trevor Project’s Guide to Being an Ally to Transgender and Nonbinary Youth. It’s an introductory educational resource that covers a wide range of topics, including the differences between sex and gender, and shares best practices on how to support transgender and nonbinary people.

To all the people who now feel that their experience of the books has been tarnished or diminished, I am deeply sorry for the pain these comments have caused you. I really hope that you don’t entirely lose what was valuable in these stories to you. If these books taught you that love is the strongest force in the universe, capable of overcoming anything; if they taught you that strength is found in diversity, and that dogmatic ideas of pureness lead to the oppression of vulnerable groups; if you believe that a particular character is trans, nonbinary, or gender fluid, or that they are gay or bisexual; if you found anything in these stories that resonated with you and helped you at any time in your life — then that is between you and the book that you read, and it is sacred. And in my opinion nobody can touch that. It means to you what it means to you and I hope that these comments will not taint that too much.

Love always,
Dan

And now Jonathan Ross has backtracked after speaking to his daughter. It's so depressing.

MashedPotatoBrainz · 09/06/2020 12:24

I genuinely don't get the logic behind self identifying. A biological male identifies as a woman and that self identity is sacrosanct. Anything which identifies them as being part of a group they don;t identify with is completely unacceptable and literally violence against them.

But how I identify as a biological female is irrelevant and when I'm identified as being part of a group I don;t identify with then I'm the one in the wrong.

So they can identify how they like and that is unquestionable, and I have to identify how I'm told and not question it.

It just makes no sense.

Nixmini · 09/06/2020 12:25

@LetGoOfTheLittleDistractions I saw that!

Now I know how my parents must have felt when I used to lecture them about my current cause of the moment when I was in my teens.

WrathFaeKlopp · 09/06/2020 12:26

Since Emma Watson has already demonstrated that TWAW, she is biding her time.
I predict she'll come out of her gilded closet to support Daniel.

They are biting the hand that feeds.

StrangeLookingParasite · 09/06/2020 12:26

I do not identify as a woman, I am just fucking stuck with being one

Yes to this.

merrymouse · 09/06/2020 12:26

The Daniel Radcliffe tweet came across as though he hadn't actually written it himself.

I'm sure he didn't write it.

As he says, he has bought the line that the only people qualified to talk about sex are trans activists.

If only he had read the Stonewall guidelines he would realise that we are all trans.

Enderthedragon · 09/06/2020 12:26

Jesus, what a load of hyperbolic bollocks that article is.

JK Rowling said that biological sex is real and that 'people who menstruate' are called women. She didn't fucking incite violence or call for people to harm trans people or any of the other crap that people are claiming. Honestly, these people are so disconnected from reality in so many ways.

Sandybval · 09/06/2020 12:26

I am still astounded by the push by some to rename FGM, for that reason I will never stan. Good for JK, shame on Daniel Radcliffe for putting his worries over his career over anything else.

JulesJules · 09/06/2020 12:27

Absolutely @Tootsweets23
I'm furious with the lot of them today - DR, Philip Pullman being disingenuous, JR for being spineless & backtracking and some idiot from the SNP who has just stated that transwomen are adult human females, ffs.

I did see that Neil Oliver came out in support of JK though

Heygirlheyboy · 09/06/2020 12:27

Jonathan Ross should note the likes for his first tweet compared to his second... Very annoying that he has backtracked. Does he believe that people other than female bodied have periods?!

terryleather · 09/06/2020 12:28

FU sky high Radcliffe

Enderthedragon · 09/06/2020 12:28

Yes, Jonathan Ross has backtracked and has realised it isn't his place to tell trans people what is or isn't transphobic.

But it's brilliant for men like Daniel Radcliffe to tell women who is and isn't a woman.

Fuck off.

SirVixofVixHall · 09/06/2020 12:29

Yes, why Phillip Pullman wading in ?

ArcheryAnnie · 09/06/2020 12:29

There's a tweet doing the rounds saying "j.k. rowling is so embarrassing can we just pretend like daniel radcliffe wrote harry potter" which has got more than 600,000 likes. Because ascribing a woman's work to a man is something that hasn't routinely happened throughout history? Because ascribing a woman's work to a man is supposed to be progressive now?

< slow clap >

sunshinesupermum · 09/06/2020 12:31

Now I know how my parents must have felt when I used to lecture them about my current cause of the moment when I was in my teens.

My 30 something daughters are still doing it! We agree on lots of things but not about the JKR controversy.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 09/06/2020 12:32

What a relief - a Man has come to tell us fluffy female types what is Right and what is Wrong.

Idiot.

Heygirlheyboy · 09/06/2020 12:33

Someone else said she's hardly a feminist if she purposely used JK to cover her sex and writes under RG.. I wonder have they ever stopped to consider why Hmm My 8yo DS understands this.

ChaToilLeam · 09/06/2020 12:36

I didn’t choose to be a woman, I was born that way.

But Daniel Radcliffe is choosing to be spineless and fickle.

I will not have my sex mansplained to me by an overprivileged overgrown boy. Pissed off about this after being called a TERF by one of my best friends. Fucks sake, there are plenty of TW who agree they are not women, is it his place to deny their reality?

WrathFaeKlopp · 09/06/2020 12:36

And now Jonathan Ross has backtracked after speaking to his daughter
Sounds like a few people are dishing out the super injunctions.

Transgender is a protected characteristic in the Equality Act therefore it's now a legal right.

But it's a legal fiction not a truth.

And that is why people are backing down. People are being threatened with legal consequences for stating the truth.

JKR is powerful enough to state the truth.

God we so need her and people like her.

poorbuthappy · 09/06/2020 12:37

Well i look forward to gay men coming out (no pun honest) and announcing they are using a trans woman for surrogacy,
and for straight men to announce they love sucking girl dick.
Until then they can fuck off.

terryleather · 09/06/2020 12:38

And to the men like Ronson, Pullman and the rest who stick their fat noses into something they know jack shit and fuck all about, they get some push back and then it's all a bit hard/they don't really care so they just walk away - that is male privilege right there.

I wish women, the actual cunty kind, had the fucking luxury of not caring and being able to walk away from this tsunami of shit.

lionheart · 09/06/2020 12:38
poorbuthappy · 09/06/2020 12:40

I thought transgender was protected only if a GRC was obtained?

Datun · 09/06/2020 12:40

Dear lord.

Men taking credit for women's work is as depressing and infuriating as it is prevalent.

Daniel Radcliffe owes every single penny in his bank account to J. K. Rowling. Every last one.

I would, however, urge everyone to not believe that Twitter is the centre of the universe. It isn't.

Normal people, almost every last one, would find it extraordinary that saying women have periods is killing men.

This is the dark before the dawn.

Of course, it's utterly depressing to see quite how many men hate women. But this is nothing new. Germaine Greer said it, and I, among many other women I'm sure, thought it was rather harsh.

Now I realise it's the tip of the iceberg.

But it's not new. I think we will have to remember that.

Twitter just gives all these women haters a place to gather. It doesn't mean there are more of them.

Fanthorpe · 09/06/2020 12:41

Sara Pascoe, Richard Osman and Aisling Bea now supporting the TWAW posts on Twit.

So much denial of material reality with little thought for the consequences.
