Daniel Radcliffe responds to JK Rowling’s tweets: “Transgender women are women. Any statement to the contrary erases the identity and dignity of transgender people”

Daniel Radcliffe Responds to J.K. Rowling’s Tweets on Gender Identity – The Trevor Project

FULL STATEMENT

I realize that certain press outlets will probably want to paint this as in-fighting between J.K. Rowling and myself, but that is really not what this is about, nor is it what’s important right now. While Jo is unquestionably responsible for the course my life has taken, as someone who has been honored to work with and continues to contribute to The Trevor Project for the last decade, and just as a human being, I feel compelled to say something at this moment.

Transgender women are women. Any statement to the contrary erases the identity and dignity of transgender people and goes against all advice given by professional health care associations who have far more expertise on this subject matter than either Jo or I. According to The Trevor Project, 78% of transgender and nonbinary youth reported being the subject of discrimination due to their gender identity. It’s clear that we need to do more to support transgender and nonbinary people, not invalidate their identities, and not cause further harm.

I am still learning how to be a better ally, so if you want to join me in learning more about transgender and nonbinary identities check out The Trevor Project’s Guide to Being an Ally to Transgender and Nonbinary Youth. It’s an introductory educational resource that covers a wide range of topics, including the differences between sex and gender, and shares best practices on how to support transgender and nonbinary people.

To all the people who now feel that their experience of the books has been tarnished or diminished, I am deeply sorry for the pain these comments have caused you. I really hope that you don’t entirely lose what was valuable in these stories to you. If these books taught you that love is the strongest force in the universe, capable of overcoming anything; if they taught you that strength is found in diversity, and that dogmatic ideas of pureness lead to the oppression of vulnerable groups; if you believe that a particular character is trans, nonbinary, or gender fluid, or that they are gay or bisexual; if you found anything in these stories that resonated with you and helped you at any time in your life — then that is between you and the book that you read, and it is sacred. And in my opinion nobody can touch that. It means to you what it means to you and I hope that these comments will not taint that too much.

Love always,
Dan

I had got used to the push back against this and I'm so disappointed it seems to have swung back again.

oscarandelliesdad · 09/06/2020 11:57

So fucking angry on her behalf. Urghh. Woke men

Mokosh · 09/06/2020 11:58

Google autogynephilia.

LouHotel · 09/06/2020 11:59

I'm really interested in how Emma Watson who is a womens un goodwill ambassador is going to respond when her job title is about increasing education for women and girls who are refused due to their biological sex....good luck on that tightrope Emma.

AuntieBiotic · 09/06/2020 11:59

Male actor defines what constitutes a woman. It’s like a white person telling a black person what constitutes racism. Neither have a clue but in the first instance there is biological fact involved which clearly defines male and female. Piss off Daniel JK Rowling is absolutely right. Feeling like a woman (whatever feeling like a women involves 🤦🏻‍♀️ ) and dressing like one does not make a man a woman. Fact. If I was JK Rowling I would be well pissed off with the guy who butchered the main part in the dramatisation of my book and making millions in the process, correcting me over basic science.

sunshinesupermum · 09/06/2020 12:00

*People have been conflating sex with gender. Sex is a biological fact like xx and xy. Yes there are outliers but they are medical conditions. To say that the outliers prove xx and xy are not an accurate reflection of sex is like saying that because some people are born without limbs, we can't generalise and say that people have to legs and two arms.

Gender are the society's expectations of males and females. They change overtime. So, a transgender woman can have female gender but not female sex.*

This. Why do people not understand biological facts?

Bashstreetkid it was 45 so we're both wrong. Do you think someone born Jan Morris would have had the privileges and opportunities James Morris had?

ArcheryAnnie · 09/06/2020 12:02

Dan R feels entirely comfortable giving away rights that are not his to give away? I wonder what gives him such confidence?

It's a mystery.

redskittleorangeskittle · 09/06/2020 12:06

How is 'people who menstruate' more accessible than 'women'?

Accessibility is supposed to mean that your message can be understood by everyone.

NewAccountForCorona · 09/06/2020 12:09

I still don't get why TWAW is considered to be such a gotcha.

Starting an argument with an untruth is just so strange, but they all do it. It would be like beginning to solve a maths equation by starting from the premise that 1 = 2 therefore .....

Jux · 09/06/2020 12:10

DR was always a nasty little oik, I've never seen him do anything where he acted better than a gormless 11 year old.

This doesn't surprise me one jot. Opportunist.

macaroniandpizza · 09/06/2020 12:11

Im disappointed in his statement i must say i was expecting better from him

MrGHardy · 09/06/2020 12:12

I am the Queen. Any statement to the contrary erases my identity and dignity.

Why? Because I say so.

What a virtue signalling tosser.

overworkedandstressed · 09/06/2020 12:13

Where is JK supposed to be wrong . Every single person who does menstrate is a woman. It's a fact not an idea she had.

WrathFaeKlopp · 09/06/2020 12:13

The Daniel Radcliffe tweet came across as though he hadn't actually written it himself.
It was very much a statement of pompous authority.

Itisbetter · 09/06/2020 12:13

Well he’s a bit of an arse isn’t he?

SchadenfreudePersonified · 09/06/2020 12:13

Daniel Radcliffe is a heterosexual man isn't he?

Is he?

If he is heterosexual (and I'm sure I've seen stuff that casts doubt on this) then I'll believe that he really thinks they are women when he shags one. A lot of them are "sexy" in a stereotyped, "Barbie-doll" (ie not a real woman). I'll bet he'd have a kitten if one came on to him!

Enderthedragon · 09/06/2020 12:14

I'm really interested in how Emma Watson who is a womens un goodwill ambassador is going to respond when her job title is about increasing education for women and girls who are refused due to their biological sex....good luck on that tightrope Emma.

I know - her head must be exploding right now with what to do. She must know that women all over the world are oppressed because of their sex, she works with the, she claims to stand up and help them. So she can't come out now and say that she disagreed with JK's claim that sex is real and immutable. By doing so, she is basically saying that all those women and girls she claims to help could simply identify out of their oppression.

Quite the quandary really....

SchadenfreudePersonified · 09/06/2020 12:14

DR was always a nasty little oik, I've never seen him do anything where he acted better than a gormless 11 year old.

He's only a mediocre actor at best. He got the role because he had the "look".

SirVixofVixHall · 09/06/2020 12:16

Jan Morris “ My chief fault is an utter self-centredness”
I think that is something that would resonate with the women on the trans widows thread.
Morris , as mentioned in that article as a father, did what he wanted and his wife was the one responsible for child care. True of most men of his age at the time of course.

Sonotech · 09/06/2020 12:16

A man telling women what a women is Grin the irony!

I’ve never bothered to watch anything he was in after HP. He is irrelevant to me. Kick in the tits for JK

merrymouse · 09/06/2020 12:19

She must know that women all over the world are oppressed because of their sex, she works with the, she claims to stand up and help them.

I'm not sure. This point seems to have escaped both Amnesty and UN Women.

WrathFaeKlopp · 09/06/2020 12:19

Come on Emma Watson, you are very quiet on this, Daniel is expecting you.

Tootsweets23 · 09/06/2020 12:20

This more than anything surrounding the response to JK has made me incandescent.

This utterly mediocre actor, plucked from obscurity as a child by JK, who owes his entire career and privileged life to the opportunities she gave him, now gets on his high horse to dare to lecture her, patronise her, profess to speak on behalf of the franchise she owns and created, states that she and he are equally ignorant on this subject while selecting fucking wrong medical advice because it aligns with his misogynistic world view. All the while giving away my and my daughter's rights to men.

The sanctimony. The pomposity. The faux humility. The entitlement.

Daniel Radcliffe you are no 1 on my shit list.
