Daniel Radcliffe responds to JK Rowling’s tweets: “Transgender women are women. Any statement to the contrary erases the identity and dignity of transgender people”

Daniel Radcliffe Responds to J.K. Rowling’s Tweets on Gender Identity – The Trevor Project

FULL STATEMENT

I realize that certain press outlets will probably want to paint this as in-fighting between J.K. Rowling and myself, but that is really not what this is about, nor is it what’s important right now. While Jo is unquestionably responsible for the course my life has taken, as someone who has been honored to work with and continues to contribute to The Trevor Project for the last decade, and just as a human being, I feel compelled to say something at this moment.

Transgender women are women. Any statement to the contrary erases the identity and dignity of transgender people and goes against all advice given by professional health care associations who have far more expertise on this subject matter than either Jo or I. According to The Trevor Project, 78% of transgender and nonbinary youth reported being the subject of discrimination due to their gender identity. It’s clear that we need to do more to support transgender and nonbinary people, not invalidate their identities, and not cause further harm.

I am still learning how to be a better ally, so if you want to join me in learning more about transgender and nonbinary identities check out The Trevor Project’s Guide to Being an Ally to Transgender and Nonbinary Youth. It’s an introductory educational resource that covers a wide range of topics, including the differences between sex and gender, and shares best practices on how to support transgender and nonbinary people.

To all the people who now feel that their experience of the books has been tarnished or diminished, I am deeply sorry for the pain these comments have caused you. I really hope that you don’t entirely lose what was valuable in these stories to you. If these books taught you that love is the strongest force in the universe, capable of overcoming anything; if they taught you that strength is found in diversity, and that dogmatic ideas of pureness lead to the oppression of vulnerable groups; if you believe that a particular character is trans, nonbinary, or gender fluid, or that they are gay or bisexual; if you found anything in these stories that resonated with you and helped you at any time in your life — then that is between you and the book that you read, and it is sacred. And in my opinion nobody can touch that. It means to you what it means to you and I hope that these comments will not taint that too much.

Love always,
Dan

My 30 something daughters are still doing it! We agree on lots of things but not about the JKR controversy.

My mum used to tell me over and over again about how much the pill had changed her life, and what it was like to have children before there was maternity leave - it went right over my head.

It took me quite a while to comprehend the consequences for her generation of having to marry your first boyfriend, complete financial dependence, no concept of abuse within marriage, and limited ability to divorce.

My life isn't better because I am more evolved, it is better because previous generations fought for the rights that now protect me. Those rights can also be taken away.

Maybe there is an evolutionary impulse to disregard the experience of previous generations and plough on regardless?

ExTwitter · 09/06/2020 12:42

forgive me if this has been mentioned already... I should RTFT.. But:

If black people decide what racism against them is.
If trans people decide what transphobia against them is.
Why don't women get to decide what sexism against them is?

BaronessFloralBunting · 09/06/2020 12:42

On the BBC now that Radcliffe has apologized on behalf of JKR. Includes a short response from a person who has recently come out as a TW, who used to love Harry Potter and feels very hurt by JKR and very pleased with Radcliffe.

Glam picture of TW obligatory, naturally.

Crystaltree · 09/06/2020 12:42

Re Ally in the tweets, exclusionist in the sheets... this research is interesting (not new btw)
www.them.us/story/cis-trans-dating

Basically what it says is that the vast majority of people won't date trans, unless they count the trans person as still being the gender of their birth.

Also the article gives it the usual framing that it's somehow something wrong with a person that they feel like this, although

"It is also possible that at least some of the trans exclusion is due to the fact that for some people, sexual orientation might be not (just) about a partner’s gender identity, but attraction to specific body types and/or judgment of reproductive capabilities." No shit sherlock.

@SchadenfreudePersonified

DR was always a nasty little oik, I've never seen him do anything where he acted better than a gormless 11 year old.

He's only a mediocre actor at best. He got the role because he had the "look".

Didn't his mum have the gig to cast the part?

Because we don't matter, @ExTwitter - because we are women.

LizzieSiddal · 09/06/2020 12:44

Trans women are trans women.

Why isnt that enough?

2bazookas · 09/06/2020 12:46

What about erasing the dignity and identity of women, eh Dan? Doesn't that matter?

Dicks are trumps, period.

sunshinesupermum · 09/06/2020 12:46

Maybe there is an evolutionary impulse to disregard the experience of previous generations and plough on regardless?

Could well be. Meanwhile it's causing a rift between me and my daughters Sad

They are trying to no platform you
SirVixofVixHall · 09/06/2020 12:47

Nooo not Sara Pascoe ! She seems so lovely.

merrymouse · 09/06/2020 12:48

Sara Pascoe, Richard Osman and Aisling Bea now supporting the TWAW posts on Twit.

It's easy to tweet.

Actually explaining why sex based rights are no longer necessary is more difficult.

(Which is probably why this debate always seems so one side on MN - somehow people manage to argue for and against Brexit, for and against grammar schools, for and against BLW (is that still a thing? I haven't visited the weaning threads for years) and for and against loo brushes, but they never seem to be able to explain what TWAW means).

NiceLegsShameAboutTheFace · 09/06/2020 12:50

Do one, Daniel! Angry

littlbrowndog · 09/06/2020 12:50

Only on twitter.

Yeah true datun. No person in the world really believes that men can have periods

Everyone knows that only women and girls have periods

And it’s so patronising of anyone stating otherwise just to make themselves look so wokey

Just patronising and fake

BaronessRadishFemish · 09/06/2020 12:50

I can't be arsed to trawl through all of this so please may I ask:

Did that poster finally answer the question and point to the "vile abuse" alleged to be on this thread?

YgritteSnow · 09/06/2020 12:51

This is the dark before the dawn.

I hope so much you're right. I felt close to tears this morning after reading DR's statement and the all triumphant tweets in response.

Helmetbymidnight · 09/06/2020 12:52

I'm so fucked off with it all.

Bottleup · 09/06/2020 12:53

Amazing. A man telling us what a woman is. Classy.

Tootsweets23 · 09/06/2020 12:54

I just have to log off the internet and twitter. Daniel Radcliffe! I mean, Daniel Radcliffe! Pontificating about anything! If it wasn't for JK he'd be working in insurance in Woking.

LouHotel · 09/06/2020 12:54

I had to reply to someone Facebook about this and was actually fairly innocuous and more a out DR apologising on behalf of JKR. I'm now getting a fucking pile on.

Apparently hes not apologising hes showing empathy as in 'I'm sorry for your loss'

No ones fucking died!

RuffleCrow · 09/06/2020 12:55

Ooh Neil Oliver is supporting JKR! I have had a huge crush on him for decades. It just got 100x worse Blush. He'd make a great HP character if she ever fancied a GC remake of the films.

lljkk · 09/06/2020 12:56

I like what DR wrote so thanks for the link.

TheMarzipanDildo · 09/06/2020 12:56

I disagree massively with him here but I don’t think it makes him a terrible person. He seem quite sweet generally, just clearly lacking in critical thinking on this issue. Like a lot of people. It is of course very irritating and makes me want to scream at a wall and I personally think if people haven’t done their research they shouldn’t pretend they have, but the expression of stupidity or naivety are natural side effects of free speech I guess.

Focusanddetermination · 09/06/2020 12:57

I've felt so powerless this morning. If a woman as rich, famous and therefore powerful as JK is, is under such attack for saying something so minimal. It's frightening and depressing. That 600,000 people could think it's OK to Rob this woman of artistic work that she alone created, from her own mind, and instead attribute it to a young man who has done nothing to create it, and only benefited from it because his parents knew the right people.
