If only more of the the people who consider themselves left wing had a look at the money trail and the Christians for trans rights crowd.

grannieali · 08/06/2020 18:03

I am baffled and offended by most of this thread. What is genderwoo? Why is there so much effing and blinding on Mumsnet? I struggle a bit, but try hard to understand people not secure in their original gender. But what has that got to do with JK Rowling? I shall hurry back with relief to Gransnet.

merrymouse · 08/06/2020 18:03

and a brain (gender) that didn’t match.

I have sympathy for your struggles with anxiety, but I have the right to disagree with your views on gender. I believe that gender is a social construct that does women great harm. I do not believe that my breasts dictate how my brain feels, or that there is a right or wrong brain for male and female people.

Now imagine celebrating and applauding a person who would mock someone for something that happens before they are even born.

You have not been mocked, and certainly not by JK Rowling who has only commented on sex.

You have a believe that female and male brains are intrinsically different. I don't. You have a right to express that view. You do not have the right to insist that everyone else agrees with your view.

Can you not see that by insisting that you are non binary and that other people have a feminine gender, you are forcing gender on others?

BringbackLang · 08/06/2020 18:04

I'm truly glad you are happier within yourself and have embraced you gender non conformity but that still doesn't change biological fact.

BringbackLang · 08/06/2020 18:06

There was an email from MN earlier highlighting this thread. Could be to do with the influx.

merrymouse · 08/06/2020 18:07

What is genderwoo?

The belief that we all have to be stuffed into a gender box.

Sex is a medical term.

Gender refers to social and cultural expectations e.g. that a woman shouldn't receive an eduction.

Dances · 08/06/2020 18:09

Full on pitch invasion here. In one page, abuse, personal insults, emotional blackmail

merrymouse · 08/06/2020 18:10

Yes, it’s still not easy living as a gender non confirming person

Do you mean gender confirming or gender conforming? What would make you think that anyone on this thread is gender conforming or confirming?

iswhois · 08/06/2020 18:13

She's fantastic

Osquito · 08/06/2020 18:13

There is a similar comments thread on R29 about this that touches on some interesting points (not the article, the responses at end)

www.refinery29.com/en-gb/jk-rowling-transophobia-twitter-row

I personally think I’ve always been very relaxed (naive?) about the whole topic, I couldn’t really care what someone identified as... but only recently have become aware of some of the issues around it all (thanks in part to Mn). Still trying to figure out the whole thing, and where I stand on the various debates.
Reading this thread with interest.

BringbackLang · 08/06/2020 18:14

To answer your question, Dances, I'm partial to a bit of Lemon Drizzle cake myselfSmile

BringbackLang · 08/06/2020 18:17

Thing is most women on this board are what you call gender non conforming. A lot of us don't have a gender because we know we are woman and don't need to subscribe to a label other than our sex.

Not everyone wants to be stuck in a box.

OldCrone · 08/06/2020 18:20

I was born with female anatomy and a brain (gender) that didn’t match. I’ve undertaken some surgery and hormone treatment to a certain extent to get my brain and body to align.

Can you explain what you mean by your body and brain not 'matching'? In what way did they not 'match' and how do you think they should? I've been following this debate for several years now, and I still don't understand this aspect which is often mentioned by people who identify as 'trans'. I presume it is more than simply not liking having to wear skirts to school (I hated that too), or a dislike of part of your body.

Yes, it’s still not easy living as a gender non confirming person, but that’s not because of how I am...it’s because of how society is.

What do you think is difficult about being gender non conforming? Do you think most women fit neatly into an ultra feminine gender box?

truthfairy · 08/06/2020 18:23

I realise I can probably alone on mumsnet, but I think JK Rowling is awful, and misinformed. The vast majority of the trans movement does not deny sex exists, and her strawman arguments cause great damage and hurt. Somebody with a platform as large as hers has a responsibility to fully inform themselves before tweeting. For anybody who feels like reading an alternative view, I found this Twitter thread really interesting twitter.com/redlightvoices/status/1269530880458067969?s=19

RumbaswithPumbaas · 08/06/2020 18:26

It disappointing that when women’s health can still the poor relation in many ways (fewer research grants, drug trials only done on male bodies, delayed diagnoses for endometriosis, mesh scandal, post natal depression under-diagnosed Etc etc)

women are now viciously abused for speaking honestly about their biology and biological functions.

We might as well just go back to calling it “the curse” and discussing ‘women’s problems’ in stage whispers for fear of offending someone. That’s progress for you.

RufustheLanglovingreindeer · 08/06/2020 18:27

You haven’t read the thread then?

Thisismytimetoshine · 08/06/2020 18:27

For someone calling themselves Truthfairy, you speak precious little truth

Dances · 08/06/2020 18:27

Body and brain not matching is a pile of sexist, regressive BS.

And lemon drizzle is an abomination bring. You need to educate yourself, this is a poor choice

FlamingoAndJohn · 08/06/2020 18:28

I love a Victoria sponge

merrymouse · 08/06/2020 18:30

The vast majority of the trans movement does not deny sex exists

This must be the silent majority, because the more vocal minority trying to influence legislation have tried to remove sex based rights - or is your argument that they agree that sex exists but don't are about sexism?

and her strawman arguments cause great damage and hurt.

What strawman argument? She has simply asserted that sex exists and has consequences. From what you say the vast majority of trans people agree with her - so why the offence?

Thisismytimetoshine · 08/06/2020 18:31

And lemon drizzle is an abomination bring. You need to educate yourself, this is a poor choice
Use orange instead - game changer.

Thinkingabout1t · 08/06/2020 18:31

Sadly she may be jumped with examples of women who don't menstruate for example post menopausal women.

But she's still correct. Only women menstruate (whatever they choose to call themselves). That doesn't mean all women menstruate, as you point out. But the fact remains that anyone who menstruates is a woman, or a girl ie a very young woman.

Thisismytimetoshine · 08/06/2020 18:32

and her strawman arguments cause great damage and hurt.
Do you actually understand the term straw man? Asserting that only women menstruate most definitely doesn't come under this heading 🙄

BlackForestCake · 08/06/2020 18:33

I love a Victoria sponge

Monarchism is pretty dodgy.

Datun · 08/06/2020 18:33

I remember talking to my consultant on the way down for surgery and he said that it’s all just science. There is a set order of how a foetus should develop. A pattern of precise hormones that are released at set times, in set quantities. For some though, this order or pattern is interrupted or received differently. The results are intersex, transgender and non binary individuals. It is something as out of control as the colour of our eyes.

Of course he didn't say that.

You're talking to women many of whom are doctors, biologists, endocrinologists and surgeons. 🙄
