I think she’s very brave to have done it but I think the blowback will be huge, and will galvanise TRAs and woke allies to fight harder and dirtier.

I'm not sure - their problem is that the more light is shed on the issue, the more it becomes apparent that their arguments don't make sense.

BentBastard · 07/06/2020 11:32

I'm pleased JK has posted so clearly on this. I have long felt people have been wasting their time and energy arguing with the cult members. The cult members are lost, no amount of reasoning, science or rational debate will make any difference.

The answer lies in educating the undecided before they're captured by the cult.

I think this tweet will help because is a bit like my WTF moment on this issue (after Germaine Greer interview where I initially felt sad that she had become a bigot then actually read about it and was utterly convinced by all the logic which is, of course, obvious when you properly see it).

stella47 · 07/06/2020 11:33

Eeuuurghh - the men demanding that she "donate her wealth immediately, or saying "billionaire's shouldn't exist.
e.g. Green MSP Patrick Harvie
or another random

"@jk_rowling
, I see that you follow me, and that makes me feel bad, so I'm going to help you. Here are all the places I could think of where you can start donating your immense wealth like immediately:"

Helmet, thank you re Damian Barr! Such a shame, I've been loving Shelf Isolation on BBC Scotland, thought he would have a more considered view.

Winesalot · 07/06/2020 11:35

PhewW! What a day to sleep in!

I notice twatter is doing its thing as usual. Tweets that supposedly have 10+, 20+ replies have none when you expand them. Feels like they are curating the bias again. The negative tweets show but who knows what the others said. Can only assume they were in support of her. And can only assume they are magicing tweets in direct reply to her tweets away as well.

Twatter is very manipulative.

But most people haven’t been “in” this as long as most of us here or on Twitter. JK herself says she’s been considering this issue for three years. Most people will give it a casual glance and I think will be swayed by the wall of voices shouting “literal violence!” It’ll be Janice Turner and Hadley Freeman and a small handful of voices in the MSM who may speak up in support, amongst swathes of personalities on twitter crucifying her and the GC movement.

Which I knew but I suddenly lost the will to analyse further I knew you knew, was just exercising my inner pedant - you know what I’m like 🤣

@UglyGlassVase

How does twitter work in terms of showing retweets?

I don't want to be a conspiracy theorist but she looks like she is being ratio'd when you look at her whole time line (32k replies to 19k retweets) when you click on the tweet itself the 19k retweets turns into 68k.

Is the 19k the retweets with comments?

I was wondering similarly - someone upthread mentioned 80K likes, but the highest I can see is a 41K I think. And I seem to remember previous twitter manipulation where "likes" just disappeared if it didn't suit the predominant narrative in twitter HQ.
TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 07/06/2020 11:38

Love JKR so much. Flowers

TalkingtoLangClegintheDark · 07/06/2020 11:38

Black lives matter unless they're the lives of black women asserting their right to single sexual spaces then they don't matter.

Ain’t that the truth, Clymene.

Yes! I noticed it too. Is this actually a thing? So cheeky if it was a person it would get its own CF thread in AIBU.

Clymene · 07/06/2020 11:41

Shappi is a smart woman. She knows it's bollocks but her livelihood is based on the liberal bread and butter that is the BBC so she can't afford to speak out. And that is the truth for many I'm afraid.

TalkingtoLangClegintheDark · 07/06/2020 11:42

@littlbrowndog

‘Feminazi’, ‘TERF’, ‘bitch’, ‘witch’. Times change. Woman-hate is eternal.

From jk herself on her twitter feed

Brilliant 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
TalkingtoLangClegintheDark · 07/06/2020 11:43

Weird event with the applause emoji there...

UglyGlassVase · 07/06/2020 11:43

@CaraDune, interesting. I can see 123k likes. Its been 100k+ all day for me.

What does it say for you atm?

Yorkshirelass04 · 07/06/2020 11:44

@gingerandthebiscuits

I think we have to keep supporting the views we agree with on Twitter. It's the only way.

The problem is, nobody really wants a nuanced argument or to consider another point of view. It's about 'winning'. You're either all good or all bad. This isn't debate.

TalkingtoLangClegintheDark · 07/06/2020 11:44

But only temporarily, apparently! Confused

scrappydappydoooooo · 07/06/2020 11:46

While I believe there is hope for the UK, I truly despair about the USA. I am a member of a very big US based Facebook book club (readers) and one member yesterday posted that she has a "non-binary" child; she asked for book recommendations so she could "educate herself". You would not believe the amount of virtue signalling applause she got among the book recommendations, people saying what a fantastic mother she is and bla bla bla. In fact, more "you are so wonderful" posts than book recommendations.

I'm on a facebook hobby group where most members are American. There has been quite a lot of discussion of race issues in the last week. Then right in the middle of some of the black members talking about their experiences some posters (all white) had to make an issue about how they are regularly misgendered just because they present femme. One poster started a thread on it first and a number of others all jumped in to say the same thing. Apparently they are Femme presenting AFAB Embees* and have a problem with how often they are referred to as she/her.

*To the uninitiated, that is someone who was assigned female at birth but is actually non-binary but likes to dress as women typically do in our society. All I could see were a bunch of attention seekers who were so desperately insecure that when an issue had fuck all to do with them, they had to make sure that they too were seen as special minorities. Because if their special made up category wasn't frankly ridiculous enough as it was, the nature of the facebook group means that sex/gender pronouns are almost never used. People are in direct discussion with each other, they almost exclusively use I/me/you. She/her would just almost never, ever be used unless a well known expert was being discussed.

Dances · 07/06/2020 11:47

Those Daily Mail comments have been heavily moderated- very 'free speech' focused and very little about women's rights

CaraDune · 07/06/2020 11:48

I'm not actually on twitter, so I'm looking just via a web browser, and it's showing 42.2K likes for the original "if only there were a word for people who menstruate" tweet.

GingerAndTheBiscuits · 07/06/2020 11:49

@yorkeshirelass04 I know, it’s one of the reasons I’m contemplating deactivating it, as there are probably more constructive places to be contributing to the discussion. I agree with a previous poster to summed up what a cesspit Twitter is too!

CaraDune · 07/06/2020 11:49

Ah, the sex is real one is showing 122K likes... maybe not as bad as I thought.

CourtneyLurve · 07/06/2020 11:52

Black lives matter unless they're the lives of black women asserting their right to single sexual spaces then they don't matter.

Exactly. There's a thread about JK's post on Lipstickalley, a website for black American women and it's almost entirely in support of her comments.

Datun · 07/06/2020 11:52

I think she’s very brave to have done it but I think the blowback will be huge, and will galvanise TRAs and woke allies to fight harder and dirtier.

It doesn't matter (apart from upsetting JK), because as soon as the sunlight hits the surface, it all evaporates.

The blowback on Twitter is irrelevant in the long run. It needs to get into mainstream media, on chat shows, and phone ins.

Questions just need to be asked.

All. The. Time.

What is a woman?

Show me the studies about puberty blockers.

Should men compete against women?

Is defunding a rape refuge correct, in your opinion?

All they've got, all they have ever had is don't be mean, shut up, you're just a woman.

There is absolutely nothing refuting anything she has said in those comments. Just insults.

It might work superficially, because of the outrage. People wonder why the reaction is so strong.

But it becomes very clear, quite quickly that it's due to indoctrination. Because questions instantly reveal the lack of basis.

Datun · 07/06/2020 11:54

And I think that's the mail on Sunday, not the Daily Mail. Different paper. And they're pre-moderating comments. At least two friends have not had their gc comments published.
