Catch and Kill: Lies, Spies, and a Conspiracy to Protect Predators is a 2019 book by American journalist Ronan Farrow. He recounts the challenges he faced chasing the stories of Harvey Weinstein's decades of alleged rape, sexual assault, and sexual abuse of women, and the case against him.[2][3][4] Farrow argues that Weinstein was able to use Black Cube, a private Israeli intelligence service,[5] to successfully pressure executives at NBC News to kill the story there, leading him to take it to The New Yorker, where it was published and helped spark the international #MeToo movement exposing sexual abuse of women in many industries.

It’s also a podcast which is handy!

Tonz · 18/04/2020 15:54

Have never heard of Black Cube. Well worth a read I'm ordering it now it sounds an interesting book

truthisarevolutionaryact · 18/04/2020 15:55

Welcome to Mumsnet Homestayer
You seem overtly invested in undermining this young woman's story with unverified allegations. Why is that I wonder?

TheQueef · 18/04/2020 15:56

Sorry that happened to you FinallyHappy (I too hope you are) it happened to my friend many years ago in Egypt, the authority response was almost as bad as the gang rape. I don't blame you for not reporting I'm sad your parents haven't given more support.

finnmcool · 18/04/2020 16:02

Homestayer there is a video, (that the police saw and is in evidence) of the victim telling the young men who piled into the room to get out and is seen trying to drive them out of the room.
The audio on the video confirms this.

@Tonz £6.99 on Amazon kindle. It sounds good.
@truthisarevolutionaryact Her mate has proof on WhatsApp. Seriously though after watching the documentary I don't know how anyone wouldn't believe her

Tonz · 18/04/2020 16:35

Got it @groundedby boris going to read it tonight while drinking my Espresso Martini recommended by another poster

Strangerthantruth · 18/04/2020 18:12

The narrative that she was stitched up by a kangaroo court is unfair and smacks of racism to be honest, "of course those sneaky Greeks can't be trusted to give a Brit a fair trial can they eh?"

What a mind blowingly stupid comment, and it has a fair bit of competition. What "race" are Greeks then?

Muttonindistress · 18/04/2020 18:34

Also, it's not as if the same thing doesn't happen world wide. It's not specific to Cyprus. There was a documentary series on last year (I think) called 'Sex on Trial' which looked at rape trials in the US, and one of the cases featured was quite similar to this one. Two male police officers pressured the accuser into dropping the accusation and she ended up being jailed for a year. So happens everywhere, I'm afraid.

Groundedbyboris · 18/04/2020 18:43

It's no wonder a shocking amount women don't report rape. This girl though she's going to fight this all the way and good for her. She may well change the view of victims and help stop this happening again

MrsDoylesTeaBags · 18/04/2020 18:53

Mutton I watched a Netflix documentary a little while back about girls who had been drug raped and their rape recorded and shared on social media. There was a police man on there who claimed lots of girls report rape "for the attention". This was in America, no wonder rape is so unreported when that is the attitude of law enforcement.

Datun · 18/04/2020 18:56

It's no wonder a shocking amount women don't report rape.

Indeed. And it will continue as long as people like homestayer imagine that the porn soaked fantasies of young men have any connection to reality.

InvisibleWomenMustBeRead · 18/04/2020 20:39

Sadly so true @Datun

Tonz · 18/04/2020 21:16

Don't think @Homestayer will be back. Maybe trawling through WhatsApp

stumbledin · 18/04/2020 21:35

There's a good article here from Al Jazeera showing how treatment of women who have been raped in most European countries do not get justice.

It isn't about race, it is about patriarchal power and ingrained violence against women.

@stumbledin Holy shit I had no idea it was this bad. That's a hard ugly truth

InvisibleWomenMustBeRead · 18/04/2020 22:00

Sadly I agree with you too @stumbledin

CurrentBun1981 · 18/04/2020 23:21

It defo seems an odd case. It probably hasn't helped that some of the men she accused were able to prove they weren't there at the time, but I do believe she was raped.

Datun · 19/04/2020 01:17

I don't think that's right current. It was the man she was dating who named some of the rest - she didn't know them. And one of the men he named wasn't there apparently.

CurrantAffairs · 19/04/2020 03:45

Ah ok, I stand corrected, Fagan. I just remember reading that one of the defendants was able to prove his innocence as he'd posted a selfie in bed with his girlfriend.

CurrantAffairs · 19/04/2020 03:45

Ffs, Datun not Fagan!

Tonz · 19/04/2020 07:14

She didn't wrongly accuse anyone she didn't know these men it was the one she was dating who named them

Muttonindistress · 19/04/2020 08:55

The guy in bed with his girlfriend is another one of the pieces of incontrovertible proofs of her guilt oft quoted in the comments section of the Daily Mail (I've really got to stop reading them). But to be clear, she didn't know exactly who was in the room or even how many of them there were. As her 'boyfriend' was kneeling on her arms to pin her down, I assume she couldn't see exactly was happening, and one would imagine she was not thinking about the need to gather evidence of the assault as it was happening. (I can't work out how to add emojis - but I think confused, sad and angry about covers it)

Tonz · 19/04/2020 09:10

I don't know this girl will never know her but this case really gets to me it's so distressing. The panic and terror the girl must have felt when they burst in the room oh my god the boy she was seeing kneeling on her shoulders. She wouldn't have been able to process faces and details. It makes me so angry maybe because I have daughters
