I’m sure they were asking for your ‘sex at birth’ previously?

What's Zoe?

ahumanfemale · 29/03/2020 15:42

Who or what is Woke Zoe?

MrsSnippyPants · 29/03/2020 15:45

The Covid tracker app

Anyway, it has annoyed me so I have emailed them. Why not just use clear, simple language? No need for any 'assigned' nonsense. It is unhelpful and inaccurate.
We need GOOD data, segregated by SEX, and anything that can cause confusion should not be there.

I think they have been got at.

I downloaded it (perhaps on Wednesday) it definitely asked something like "Sex at birth", so they've definitely been got at in the mean time. I thought I'd taken a screenshot of it on my phone but can't find it now,

MayTheGodsBeEverInYourFavour · 29/03/2020 16:04

Given that the virus has a higher mortality rate for males, & it's so far unclear why, clear data is essential. However it may be necessary for now to appease the woke brigade in order to obtain it.

I personally have an issue with the term "assigned" in relation to a person's sex. Like there was a quota that needed to be fulfilled & someone went round with a clipboard, arbitrarily deciding who was to be male & female.

ahumanfemale · 29/03/2020 16:09

If it's for something that important then it's shocking that they are pandering to the whim of a minority. Presumably the idea is for data from the majority of the population. The majority of Brits would definitely not say that the doctor randomly assigned them a sex at birth. To pander to people who don't understand biology is ridiculous in this situation, even more than many others.

I presume they're just going to ignore the gender ID, because it's totally irrelevant!

Tartyflette · 29/03/2020 16:12

I joined about four days ago and it definitely said male or female then, i noticed it and approved.
It seems just bonkers to change it in the light of what we are beginning to find out about different effects of the virus on men and women.
Who do I email about this?

MrsSnippyPants · 29/03/2020 16:26

Here's the email Tarty

"I've spotted a bug, or would like to suggest a feature - where should I send it?

Thanks, Mrs will send one now.

PicturesOfCats · 29/03/2020 16:31

I think they’re doing it to appease, but also ensure they’re getting the data they need.
They’re asking what gender were you assigned at birth, and I’m guessing they’re looking at that, and completely ignoring the other question about how people identify.
Because it’s irrelevant.
I think it’s a woke workaround

Lordfrontpaw · 29/03/2020 16:45

They might as well ask of you dye your hair

Binterested · 29/03/2020 17:00

Oh ffs. It was clear and simple at the beginning.

BeetrootRocks · 29/03/2020 17:03

Hardly anyone was assigned a sex at birth though.

Only intersex people and due to the history of very young children being subjected to surgery means that isn't really how it works now either.

Is there a 'none' option for the assigned sex? Guessing not.

ChickenonaMug · 29/03/2020 17:13

On page 2 of this thread are 2 screenshots which show that the Zoe app did indeed ask for a person’s sex at birth.

ThinEndoftheWedge · 29/03/2020 17:25

And what happens if the Midwife was having an off day and assigned incorrectly...

DidoLamenting · 29/03/2020 17:29

I agree 99.99% of the population won't care and will treat the question as asking "what sex are you?" and will answer male or female.

A tiny proportion of gender critical feminists will make a fuss that they can't answer because they "weren't assigned a sex at birth"

A tiny proportion of trans rights activists will either welcome it or find something to make a fuss about.

ScrimpshawTheSecond · 29/03/2020 17:38

They can fuck off, then.

ThinEndoftheWedge · 29/03/2020 17:39

There is also the email address [email protected]

I imagine promoting sociological ideological euphemistic bullshit at this time when you need the app to prove and provide scientific and fact base information is not a good look if publicised in the media.

ScrimpshawTheSecond · 29/03/2020 17:39

I have neither the time nor the emotional energy to expend on pandering to this shit anymore. They want to go that way, they can go without me.

Binterested · 29/03/2020 17:42

Its more than that though. Someone’s had to go in and change the coding on the underlying database to accept this new question and somehow make the nonsense answers make sense. Unless the ‘what sex were you assigned as birth’ replaces the previous sex question and the second one is just totally disregarded on the database because they didn’t ask the first responders and because it’s irrelevant.

Which leaves you with a ‘sex assigned at birth’ question which is in itself not great because all same people know this doesn’t happen so they will have to apply common sense and answer the question which should have been asked. Namely ‘what sex are you?’

MockersxxxxxxxSocialDistancing · 29/03/2020 17:43

"assigned as" would be better.

HDDD · 29/03/2020 17:45

Using obfuscating language in a global pandemic when they need accurate data is a headfuck. Some people will have never seen that language before and stop right there. Infuriating.

JellyfishandShells · 29/03/2020 17:46

Yes- I was pleasantly pleased when I filled in the questionnaire a few days ago that it avoided this assigned nonsense.
