Yes, really. He retweeted Zoe Williams article as a ‘powerful defense (sic) of trans rights’ and has gone on in replies to demonstrate he has zero understanding of what the issues are here. Keeps complaining about ‘negative stereotypes’. He’s stuck way back in ‘be kind, men are nasty to transsexuals in prison so let anyone self-identify into women’s prison’.

Many women & some men well on the way to ratio-ing him, but will he listen?

There's an amusing bit of nominative determinism with Malicia Dabrowicz.

Lordfrontpaw · 23/03/2020 14:11

I did spot that! Grin

nauticant · 23/03/2020 14:14

For someone who thought they could easily score some woke cookies, the replies should have come as a wake up call:

Hmm read and scroll down a bit- Now he wants us sacked.

If this is what we are facing if we vote Labour - I’m out.

The left has abandoned me.

Helen Joyce has his card.

awful, awful billy bragg.

if you look at his thread, he barely stoops to talk to women, he only replies to men.

i had no idea he was such an unthinking arsehole.

he talks about 'anti-trans feminists' - hes really got no idea and has just for the easy misogyny.

RoyalCorgi · 09/07/2020 09:29

I marvel at the fact that Billy Bragg is so stupid he doesn't even realise that tweeting in favour of employers being able to sack their staff for wrongthink is not a good look for a socialist. I can only assume that his rampant misogyny has damaged his ability to think straight.

BoatyKarenMcKarenface · 09/07/2020 09:39

Bragg is a v useful idiot in publicising the full horror of what TRAs are demanding - and how wonderfully encouraging is the pasting he’s getting for it!

Yep

KaronAVyrus · 09/07/2020 09:47

I thought socialism was about protecting workers’ rights not destroying them? Or is it only men who should have their rights protected?

gardenbird48 · 09/07/2020 09:57

always sad when a grown man is caught out flat out lying …. he is commenting on the situation of the sacked author Gillian Phillips without having read the article, then when someone requests that he actually read the article - he claims it is behind a paywall(!). It wasn't when I tested it twice. I never did like him.

I might be wrong but isn't pure Socialism (not the sort we have here, which I think is pretend Socialism) all about getting everyone to think in the same way. So maybe Woke culture is on the money😂

Justhadathought · 09/07/2020 10:37

Twitter just intensifies any polarisation that already exists, and radicalises people one way or the other. Best kept away from.
Unfortunately it is also a tool of these febrile times. It can only get worse.

This is what happens with twitter. you end up taking your tribes word for it. You rely on the precis of other people. You don't read primary sources.

merrymouse · 09/07/2020 10:46

Must be - otherwise people like OJ and BB would recognise the need for sex based rights, regardless of gender.

It's ironic that this is all happening at the same time that the US Supreme Court has issued a ruling that limits access to contraception, and the UK has published a report detailing how women's health care concerns are ignored.

GCGayDad · 09/07/2020 13:16

He's getting ratioed for this on Twitter. I don't think I saw one person agreeing with him. A superb lengthy response to him as well, using socialist class analysis-based arguments from Kristina Harrison. twitter.com/KJ_Harrison/status/1280851239702532101?s=19

Bragg really is vile about this issue and utterly closed-minded. Angry

Helmetbymidnight · 09/07/2020 13:26

he IS utterly closed-minded- and im surprised and disappointed.

hes rting oj and those other guys- sigh.

AntsInPenzance · 09/07/2020 13:27

People aren't perfect and I'm not comfortable with someone being attacked as a whole for their opinion on one fairly niche topic. Bragg has done a lot of good things socially.

HermioneWeasley · 09/07/2020 13:30

The existence of women as a distinct category isn’t a “fairly niche topic” - it affects half the world population. The removal of sex based rights and exemptions disproportionately impacts on poor women, and women of colour.

Floisme · 09/07/2020 13:39

Ah, the good old women's rights are 'niche' argument.
'After the revolution, Love.'

Helmetbymidnight · 09/07/2020 13:39

well yeah, im not proposing burning his records or sending him rape or death threats- or asking his associates to re-educate themselves. or even insisting anyone who ever sang with him comes out and disassociates themselves from him...

he's v snarky to david aaranovitch in that thread too- really not coming across as a clever guy anymore.

ThinEndoftheWedge · 09/07/2020 13:43

Indeed.

I guess something can be niche yet be important, like quantum physics. I stand by opinion that in wider society, the trans issue is niche in terms of most people aren't thinking about it.

I don't agree with Bragg on this, but I'm also not going to wipe out the decades of good work he has done on social issues because I disagree with him on this one issue, especially when people on here were giving Anne Widdicombe and Norman fucking Tebbitt high fives a few days ago.

Chrysanthemum5 · 09/07/2020 13:44

@Helmetbymidnight did he ever come across as a clever guy? I'm very old so remember him from the 80s, and I remember some of his comments about the miners strike etc. were ridiculous

AntsInPenzance · 09/07/2020 13:47

@Floisme

Niche in terms of widely debated, not importance. For the record, I disagree with Bragg on this and was banned from another forum for defending JKR. I'm not playing down womens' rights or concerns by any means.
Helmetbymidnight · 09/07/2020 13:48

to wipe out the decades of good work

i dont think anyone is saying that. i also think the phrase 'being attacked' is hyperbole. people on his thread are disagreeing with him. people here are saying hes an arse.

i met him once, he was nice. i liked that he was a wc voice of the left from essex (rare!)
