Labour suspends Trevor Phillips because he identified who made up child grooming gangs

Trevor Phillips is the former chair of the Equality and Human Rights Commission - and he's recently been accused of 'transphobia' for saying women's same-sex spaces should be protected.

He's now been suspended by Labour for accurately saying that the majority of members of northern grooming gangs, which sexually abused tens of thousands of vulnerable girls, were Pakistani Muslim men.

One of the main reasons why the girls were put at risk was because the police and local authorities didn't want to intervene in case they were accused of Islamophobia.

Labour's war on both women and the freedom to say things that are true is not going away.

Wow. Just wow.

MangoFeverDream · 09/03/2020 07:22

And they seem befuddled by their lack of popularity too .... absolute shambles

Langsdestiny · 09/03/2020 07:31

There is a tiny part of me feels sorry for the labour party. I think the utter cock up they made of anti semitism has made them react in a really bizarre way to many issues. However a certain section of the party also have an authoritarian streak a mile wide.

Absolutely. This authoritarian faction will continue to alienate former Labour voters as the Conservatives consolidate the centre

Its incidents like this that show that the Labour Party are still not fit to govern.

Trevor Philip's was one of the most thoughtful, fair minded trade union leaders that I have heard being interviewed.

HumphreyCobblers · 09/03/2020 07:39

Just reading about this in The Times.

Horrendous but simultaneously not surprising. An authoritarian cult indeed.

In his own words

And there are still people who deny the ethnicity/religion of these men played a part in the decisions of the police/local authority

ErrolTheDragon · 09/03/2020 07:46

Jennie Formby, Labour’s general secretary, suspended Mr Phillips as a matter of “urgency to protect the party’s reputation”,

Their reputation for what exactly would that be?Hmm

I'm not sure the Times links above included this background piece :

And one from Phillips himself, in the comment section:

He has recently spoken out about the dangers of identity politics. This is an unbelievable action by the LP - talk about confirming their unsuitability to govern.

wrongsideofhistorymyarse · 09/03/2020 07:47

They're an absolute joke.

ErrolTheDragon · 09/03/2020 07:48

Xpost . A lot of us joining more dots today re the current Labour Party.

endofthelinefinally · 09/03/2020 07:50

Didn't he write the equality act?

MarieG10 · 09/03/2020 07:50

Well just another granade for them to self Implode. This just demonstrates what an utter sealed cocoon they are all living in. No doubt Kier Starmer will say nothing in fear of losing votes whereas a real potential leader would come out and say "if I'm voted as leader he will be immediately reinstated"

Oh well...definitely 10 years of Conservative rule

Cwenthryth · 09/03/2020 07:51

This is an hour long but I remember watching it at the time and finding it somewhat of a revelation, I’m sure it’s relevant now. Uncomfortable watching at times.

“Things We Won’t Say About Race That Are True” - 2015 documentary by Trevor Phillips

Jennie Formby, Labour’s general secretary, suspended Mr Phillips as a matter of “urgency to protect the party’s reputation”
Yes that caught my eye as well Errol! Trash the party’s reputation more like Sad

Cuntysnark · 09/03/2020 08:03

Trevor is, I’m sure, doing the rounds but a heads up that he’s on LBC at sometime in the next hour. I’m very interested in hearing him speak.

donquixotedelamancha · 09/03/2020 08:03

In fairness, they also accused him of:

Saying that Muslim communities 'don't see the world in the same way as other communities'.

Saying that being Muslim is not a race.

Generally pointing out that different groups in the UK have different values and sometimes these values conflict.

Criticising the Labour definition of Islamaphobia, in a report about Islamaphobia for the Labour party.

Worth pointing out that Phillips is the longest serving chair of any equality organisation in the UK. He is currently deputy chair of the equality standard. He is the architect of the equality act.

The quotes used against him are taken (without context) either from documentaries or from lengthy reports about equality and human rights.

It appears that nobody made this complaint, the Labour party spontaneously decided to investigate him. Labour have told him that he must not quote the allegations against him and if he needs support he should contact the CAB or Samaritans.

The only other person to accuse him of racism was BNP leader Nick Griffin.

ThinEndoftheWedge · 09/03/2020 08:07

He also stated that males shouldn’t go into female single sex spaces if they still have their ‘wedding tackle’. Whilst removing the ‘wedding tackle’ doesn’t make males females, he’s clearly GC.

TorkTorkBam · 09/03/2020 08:08

Labour is moving towards being the party of white men telling everyone else what they are allowed to talk about.

DontFretJuliette · 09/03/2020 08:08

Labour know their majority vote in small towns like mine, rely on the Muslim vote to maintain power and I feel they have Scapegoated a decent man in the name of Islamaphobia for this reason.

Sarah Champion and others have said exactly the same and not faced consequences, and she found a balance to address the difficulties of CSE issues and take action, without offending anyone in a way that is palatable to all communities.

Cwenthryth · 09/03/2020 08:09

Is it Nick Ferrari on LBC at this kind of day? I can’t always stand him first thing in the morning but he’s always interesting to listen to, even when you disagree with him on most things.

Cuntysnark · 09/03/2020 08:11

It is Nick Ferrari.
