Labour suspends Trevor Phillips because he identified who made up child grooming gangs

Trevor Phillips is the former chair of the Equality and Human Rights Commission - and he's recently been accused of 'transphobia' for saying women's same-sex spaces should be protected.

He's now been suspended by Labour for accurately saying that the majority of members of northern grooming gangs, which sexually abused tens of thousands of vulnerable girls, were Pakistani Muslim men.

One of the main reasons why the girls were put at risk was because the police and local authorities didn't want to intervene in case they were accused of Islamophobia.

Labour's war on both women and the freedom to say things that are true is not going away.

When are Labour going to realise that their twin crusades of transphobia and Islamophobia* don't even sit well together? When they do realise how will they decide which to ditch? Will be fascinating to watch.

My child attends a school where most families are Muslim. There's no way they'd accept boys being allowed to change with the girls if they don't feel like a boy.

*Disclaimer: I do think Islamophobia is an issue sometimes. I don't necessarily agree with TP on poppies. But child abuse - of children of all backgrounds and overwhelmingly by males - is a huge issue and no class of person should be considered so beyond reproach we cannot discuss their potential involvement. The concept of transphobia has been so distorted I'm not really sure what it means any more.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 09/03/2020 08:13

He made an excellent, measured programme on channel 4 a few years ago about the overreach of identity politics. Genuinely shocked at this.

Lordamighty · 09/03/2020 08:13

Unfortunately intolerant zealots have taken over the Labour Party & their view is the only one allowed. Anything outside the groupthink is bigotry.

Clymene · 09/03/2020 08:14

God I'm cringing with embarrassment for them. The Labour Party is becoming like a student union run by Rick from the Young Ones.

JustTurtlesAllTheWayDown · 09/03/2020 08:14

We need a new left wing party. I'm no longer convinced that Labour can come back from this.

TorkTorkBam · 09/03/2020 08:15

Phillips was on R4 Today about 20mins ago. Good interview.

Today is getting its mojo back. More of issues being properly discussed. For while it felt like they had only two modes: "Hollywood" lines of questioning or trying to corner the interviewee into a juicy unrepresentative sound bite.

HepzibahGreen · 09/03/2020 08:16

This is insane. This is from the Times article he wrote:
Significantly, my indictment concerns matters of faith, doctrine and dissent. It is written, not in the language of a democratic, open political movement but in the cold-eyed, accusatory prose of the zealot. In essence, after more than 30 years of promoting the Labour cause, I am accused of heresy, and threatened with excommunication.
He's dead right, the Labour Party are behaving like paranoid religious nutters. It's actually quite scary. If they are going to come for Trevor Phillips of all people, who are they coming for next?

theflushedzebra · 09/03/2020 08:19

He did indeed assist in writing the Equality Act.

He also warned that the way it was written could cause problems along the line.... as it has.

DontFretJuliette · 09/03/2020 08:21

TorkTorkBam I couldn't disagree more in the politist of ways.

Labour know they do not represent the white majority anymore, I live in Rochdale and I can assure you they are only hanging on to the red wall because of the block Muslim majority vote in many areas in Manchester, hence why GMCA surpressed the fact finding reports until they had no choice and have still not held anyone to account over the Grooming scandal, despite recent lip service by Andy Burham.

RoyalCorgi · 09/03/2020 08:23

When are Labour going to realise that their twin crusades of transphobia and Islamophobia don't even sit well together?*

This is what I find hilarious. It's so obviously the case, if anyone thinks about it for even a moment, that the vast majority of Muslims aren't going to along with allowing men who self-identify as women into women's spaces. How many Muslim parents are going to be completely on board and relaxed with a teenage boy (however much he imagines himself to be a girl) using the girls' changing rooms?

My guess is that, given the choice of which one to ditch, they'll cling on for dear life to gender ID. We've already seen in Birmingham that Muslim parents unhappy with the No Outsiders teaching programme are being accused of being "bigots". In the hierarchy of oppression, trans people are the Most Oppressed Of All.

IrmaFayLear · 09/03/2020 08:27

trying to corner the interviewee into a juicy unrepresentative sound bite.

True. I read the other day that there is a return to discussion - with appropriate questioning - rather than constantly going for that "gotcha" moment with interviewees.

Floisme · 09/03/2020 08:28

Sarah Champion and others have said exactly the same and not faced consequences,
Not the same consequences but I think Champion was either sacked or forced to resign from the Cabinet? (Sorry can't check right now.)

What's kind of amusing is that Labour were too cowardly to grasp the nettle but then still lost Rother Valley anyway.

JayAlfredPrufrock · 09/03/2020 08:28

Enjoyed listening to him on the Today programme.

Cwenthryth · 09/03/2020 08:28

He’s on LBC now.

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 09/03/2020 08:29

This is the first time in my life that I've ever been glad not to have a Labour government. What else are they going to fuck up? What's left, really? Every single time they have to pick a side they pick the wrong one. They seem to be institutionally incapable of recognizing the fact that it's possible to be a member of a minority group and at the same time be utterly in the wrong, sometimes in criminal ways.

theflushedzebra · 09/03/2020 08:29

Yeah Sarah Campion was forced out of JC's Cabinet.

MidnightJasmine · 09/03/2020 08:30

Labour keep very quiet on their self ID policies in Northern towns it's not something they use in their campaigns or advertising for the reason that Muslims are not in favour of it.

Babdoc · 09/03/2020 08:32

One can only hope that when the completely opposing ideologies of Islamophobia and Transphobia meet head on, the Labour Party will implode! And perhaps the few remaining sane members will crawl out of the wreckage and start again.

Cwenthryth · 09/03/2020 08:32

TP said that this is the offending document

Thinkingabout1t · 09/03/2020 08:34

I could weep. The tories and their supporters have dismantled this country’s economy over the past 40 years and had a good kick at society too. Their dishonesty and incompetence have been exposed time and again.

How can Labour have failed to throw them out? What is this self- destructive mania? More insanity every day — I don’t dare look at the news any more.

We need an effective opposition! We need a Labour Party that anyone in their right mind would vote for! Oh god. Every day now i dread the next bit of gobshitery.

Why don’t they just run a publicity campaign promising that for every vote cast for Labour in the next election, the leader of the Labour Party will kill a kitten?

Then they can just fuck off into oblivion.

MidnightJasmine · 09/03/2020 08:35

Sarah Champion is still an active member of the Labour Party and didn't get dismissed.

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 09/03/2020 08:35

If someone prominent would start the Left But In A Sane Way party they'd be doing us all a favour.

MidnightJasmine · 09/03/2020 08:39

I think this has been purposely done now as local elections are in May and Labour are trying to capitalise on the Tory Party Islamaphobia allegations, because it's the only thing they have going for them.

Mrsjayy · 09/03/2020 08:39

But it was a network of Pakistani men that is well known it wasn't islamaphobic it was fact.

xxyzz · 09/03/2020 08:39

Seriously isn't it bleeding obvious why they have picked on Trevor Phillips now?

He was the former head of the EHRC, which Labour are DESPARATE to attack, as it is due to report on massive anti-Semitism in Labour any day now. And they are about to be found hugely guilty. Corbyn's inner circle - particularly Formby, who is about to be found personally responsible for the worst excesses of Labour anti-Semitism, are searching for any stick to beat the EHRC with, and some of their more cultish, racist members will happily swallow that the investigation into Labour anti-Semitism is all part of an Islamophobic plot.

Join the dots, people!
