I get my news analysis from magazines I subscribe to.
I use News websites to see what will be analysed.

Twitter is immediate and public.
It achieves far less than one might think - as 'getting a response' is rarely 'achieving a proper outcome'

Doobigetta · 03/03/2020 15:20

Was anyone here a regular on the original Guardian talkboard? The one they got rid of in favour of Comment is Free, but that basically invented getting paid to piss around chatting on the internet?

Cwenthryth · 03/03/2020 15:48

Oh absolutely Listening. It’s no substitute for actual campaigns, letter writing, lobbying etc. But - immediate & public isn’t nothing tho.

And it’s entertaining at times (I’ve been ill in bed for a few days and perhaps spent far too much time on there Grin)

Haworthia · 03/03/2020 16:05

That piece is so clear and so full of common sense, I genuinely can’t believe some women read it and cry transphobia. Literally can’t believe there are women who can’t see the glaring truth of it.

And that last line 👌

Jane Clare Jones is asking on Twitter for comments and thank yous to be collated to pass on to Kath Viner, just in case anyone is interested.

For letting one article by one columnist through while allowing Owen Jones and the rest to trash women and child protection for years on end? No, no, no and no again.

I shall be requiring full and frank editorial apologies for the damage done before I even think of looking at the Guardian again.

Say thank you? Grovel for one article? After what this publication has done? I don't know what Jane is thinking but I won't be sucking up to Kath Viner for the crumbs from the table.

Love Suzanne though, always.

Yep. I’ve just been reading big Steph’s thread on the Farms and it reminded me of some of the sneerier Guardian threads back in the day. There wasn’t much that got you banned. Savile was discussed at length, long before it broke in the MSM.

stumbledin · 03/03/2020 16:26

re twitter - I think its that strange over compensation that parents seem to have got into. Anything a young person says has to be right and must be affirmed.

But I also think twitter is a sloppy journalists dream. ie they can sit back and wait until someone says something a bit nasty and they report it as twitter wars (I once looked up a reported twitter war and it was about 4 tweets).

But it is very much MSM picking out what it wants to amplify. It allows them to put into print things that they wouldn't normally be allowed to in terms of language and abuse.

Its a sort of vicious circle. The so called trolls are really just imitating the worst part of the tabloid press.

But none of this, as said above, justifies local councils, universities, the police or whoever acting as twitter was the peak of representative democracy.

As I have said many times (in fact quoting someone else) reporting twitter as news is about as representative as a journalist going to a sleazy bar and repeating what the drunks inside are saying, as though it was the ultimate in truth and polical analysis.

Manderleyagain · 03/03/2020 16:32

Its a really good idea to have a thread of "sensible comments the guardian has deleted".

Freespeecher · 03/03/2020 17:01

I'd have liked to be a fly on the wall for an OJ v Hadley Freeman argument on this. Best takedown of OJ I've seen to date was by Kate Andrews (though on a different topic). Think Hadders could run her close though.

Haworthia · 03/03/2020 17:26

Dear god - a (female) librarian has been reported to CILIP (the professional association) for retweeting the article.

I am floored. Librarians!

The profession sure has changed since I left nine years ago. Unbelievable.

DuLANGMondeFOREVER · 03/03/2020 18:26

How on earth does a person justify reporting a librarian for retweeting a Guardian article?

The bar for gulag entry sinks ever lower!

Guido? Are we now in some kind of 4 way cross over episode with the kiwi farmers, datalounge posters and Guido?

Modern life is weird as fuck.

Haworthia · 03/03/2020 18:30

My hunch was that a librarian colleague reported @DuLANGMondeFOREVER especially if they’re in the academic sector.

But actually, you’re right, it could have been reported by a passing TRA... I don’t know what is worse.

LambriniSocialist · 03/03/2020 18:36

How on earth does a person justify reporting a librarian for retweeting a Guardian article?

Well people are advising someone who works at the Guardian to get unions involved because 'you shouldn't have to put up with this shit'. The 'shit' being someone at your place of work with a different opinion to yours writing an article.

So, anything goes really...

Owen is fuming. I'm so glad The Guardian might be starting to see some sense on this issue.

Cwenthryth · 03/03/2020 19:11

Modern life is weird as fuck

Aye, it is that!

Tootsweets23 · 03/03/2020 19:22

This is hilarious. Sums up the whole vacuity of this movement that Jess had already resigned when did the big old flounce today.

DuLANGMondeFOREVER · 03/03/2020 19:26

Shall we start a sweep stake on how long Little OJ has left before the purity spiral takes him down the plug hole?

ListeningQuietly · 03/03/2020 19:32

I think the key point is that the Graun is a supertanker starting to turn.
The more of us who help it to start turning NOW
the more of a difference it will make.

Not engaging with a newspaper does not make it go away
it just lets it become more echo chamber
we should all support the first steps in the right direction so that there are more

MaMaLa321 · 03/03/2020 19:43

no - support the papers that have supported you. The Guardian deserves to fail. The sooner the better

stumbledin · 03/03/2020 19:46

Have to say I did start buying the Sunday times because of some of their article re women's rights.

But cant continue as so many of the articles are reactionary garbage and I end up feeling I have been paddling in shit hole.

Angry
ListeningQuietly · 03/03/2020 19:49

Mama
Which paper do you suggest?

I've never bought Murdoch
I'm not wild about Lebvedev
Rothermere is vile
as are the Barclays
as is Desmond
which does not leave much

Floisme · 03/03/2020 19:50

Speaking strictly for myself, I am in this to win.
I don't see how we can possibly win if the people and the organisations holding the power either change their minds, or are persuaded that it's safe to speak up and say they never believed it in the first place.
Recriminations can wait.

MaMaLa321 · 03/03/2020 19:54

The Financial Times. And, while I agree with you about the owners of the other papers listening, at least they didn't spend the last 5 years throwing women under the bus.
Which the Guardian did.
I'm not grateful to them for one article. I will never read them again.

ListeningQuietly · 03/03/2020 19:56

Mama
I've found the FTs world and Science news to be very lacking
(I prefer the Economist, PrivateEeye and New Scientist)
so am still sticking with a flick between the Beeb and the Graun for daily reading
