Clip from GBM interview this morning.
twitter.com/JammersMinde/status/1229439480064610308
She said "Babies are born without sex"
Unless she said something after to clarify what she meant by this or backtracked then I guess this is her starting point....
Astounding. Labour have lost the plot, and me.

It's also mixed up with breathtaking arrogance. All you people, who for centuries thought you knew what men and women are, you're all wrong. All the scientists, medics, teachers, lecturers and so on; all wrong.

I wouldn't be happy if I was TRA. They're pushing too far. Got too greedy. And the wheels are more likely to come off fast.

DeRigueurMortis · 18/02/2020 01:55

DB is a disgrace as an MP.

Her track record of expenses violations alone is testimony to the character of the person.

She's one of many MP's (of all political parties) who is undeserving of their role.

Goosefoot · 18/02/2020 02:30

We’re in the process of turning back the Enlightenment when scientists are either peddling fiction in the service of a cultural agenda or refusing to speak the truth out of fear of the Inquisition.

I am not sure this is exactly what's going on. Science has always had an element of cultural agenda, the perspective of the era, woven in. It's never been wholly objective the way the Enlightenment or the Victorians imagined, the questions asked, the boundaries we draw around the answers, determine to a significant extent what it looks like.

Not realising this is actually a significant blind spot around science and I have noticed that many of the people I know who are most wedded to gender ideology do not have any perspective about this. They think there is a kind of complete objectivity, one right answer. They believe that science has no narrative about itself, it's just facts. If some people say the science is different than what they have been told, well, it is one or the other that must be a wholly wrong perspective. There is only one right way to describe a phenomena in science.

It means they don't query information that claims to be scientific if it sounds not quite right, and they tend to accept certain authorities are the right ones to believe while they dismiss others. They can't really see that information may not be interpreted correctly, or that a model might be misleading, or that the data colected could be the wrong data.

Words don't have meeeniings, tra la la
It's all about feeeliiings, tra la la

Xanthangum · 18/02/2020 07:13

...while watching Angus tupping the Jersey girls,

Not my favourite musical tbh

VinandVigour · 18/02/2020 07:39

I think DB and LN should be on every news programme, along with a skilled interviewer. This would blow the whole issue out of the water. It must, surely, be legitimate to question such preposterous beliefs without being accused of transphobia.

They are the ‘dream team’ for this.

WomaninBoots · 18/02/2020 08:11

It kind of feels like we've got the Considering Becoming the Nazi Party in power and the main opposition is the Monster Raving Loony Party right now....

Scary.

Imagine if Dawn Butler bought some baby guinea pigs or gerbils... how many would she end up with? Thousands probably.

testing987654321 · 18/02/2020 08:27

Some men have vaginas
Some women have penises.

No they don't. You're getting your words mixed up.

littlbrowndog · 18/02/2020 09:10

But if babies don’t have a sex.

How are the girl babies chosen to be aborted or thrown on rubbish heaps ?

Lordfrontpaw · 18/02/2020 09:21

So if you don’t have sex - how do you know of you are ‘the wrong one’?

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 18/02/2020 09:30

You unbutton your onesie to "make it into a dress", apparently.

(Actual argument used by parent to justify why they needed to transition their child.)

Lordfrontpaw · 18/02/2020 09:33

Ah yes - because babies have thought processes like that. That was a doctor wasn't it that came out with that gem? Also the babies and toddlers pulling hair grips out of their hair - well duh, that’s what small kids do!

Lordfrontpaw · 18/02/2020 09:48

Arf. Gotta love Wiki.

HDDD · 18/02/2020 09:51

Now I think about it I'm surprised I haven't heard this before. If you believe sex is assigned at birth then it makes absolute sense that you believe babies are sexless until a doctor assigns one. I am very glad she said this on live telly so people can see the absolute fuckwittery of this revisionist biology.

So when these rational people hear stuff like “sex is a spectrum”, on the radio, while watching Angus tupping the Jersey girls, they’ll say, “fucking scientist is a loon”.

If authorities espouse rubbish which is clearly rubbish, why should ordinary people believe any of the rest of it? Why should they trust science on climate change or any other important issue, when science is busy telling them something they know isn’t true?

This comment reminded me of this www.bbc.co.uk/news/education-49597787

"People were saying, 'We want the truth, even if it's bad. We want to be treated as adults'," said Prof Eliot, who is based in Senate House, in the University of London's School of Advanced Study.

"It quickly dawned on the Ministry of Information that this was critical."

"What comes through very strongly is, 'Don't patronise us, don't treat us as children. We'll feel much better if we know where we stand."

There was an immediate response from the government and posters which seemed to be implausibly smug or propagandistic were pulled down.

There was an attempt, without divulging military secrets, to be as open as possible in news and to provide accessible information about how and why the war was being fought.

Lordfrontpaw · 18/02/2020 09:55

So when exactly does one declare one’s sex? Then when does one declare one’s gender? Is there anything else we get to choose?

SirVixofVixHall · 18/02/2020 09:57

We really need some sort of entrance exam for ministers.

Noodlenosefraggle · 18/02/2020 09:58

Oh well, I'm glad she said what she said on national TV. It's best to shine a harsh light on this lunacy and have it questioned again and again. Not, as Rebecca Long Bailey wants, for us to just stop talking about it and do what she says.

Lordfrontpaw · 18/02/2020 09:59

Shame it wasn’t a proper interviewer asking questions.

nauticant · 18/02/2020 10:25

And this comment:

They can't really see that information may not be interpreted correctly, or that a model might be misleading, or that the data colected could be the wrong data.

ahumanfemale · 18/02/2020 10:30

I'm interested to know when sex appears. I wish they'd asked her. "So ok, here's a baby, it's sexless, at which point does it develop sexual organs?"

Violetparis · 18/02/2020 10:36

A whole can of worms in identity politics has been opened and exposed. It is going to destroy Labour if they don't get a grip on it. Have any religious groups commented on this ?

NotDavidTennant · 18/02/2020 10:40

WIkipedia has this priceless story about Butler:

'In January 2009, Butler published on her website a letter which she described as an "absolutely genuine" endorsement from US President Barack Obama. The letter was printed on House of Commons branded paper and mispelt Barack Obama's name as "Barak". Butler later admitted that the endorsement had been written by her staff with the consent of Obama's aides.'

I don't think she's the brightest spark.

BovaryX · 18/02/2020 10:43

I agree. This will consume Labour. The media doesn't seem to be reporting Dawn Butler's idiotic statement. It is quite astonishing that this is an allegedly serious politician who expects voters to put her in Downing street if she gets the leadership gig. Both Butler and RLB plumb new depths of stupidity in a party which is already at basement level.....
