Twitter has taken the baton. Seems people are not happy with being told what to think.

I’m done

OccasionalKite · 12/02/2020 02:56

Labour have fucked up really badly on this.

The rejection of safeguarding children, the rejection of women's rights, the promotion of men's domination.

Slow fucking handclap.

I suppose it's too late for the LibDems too (Jo Swinson!)

Mummyoflittledragon · 12/02/2020 03:01

@Qcng
Keir Starmer was very wishing washy on the recent Mn webchat about toeing the party line on TWAW. I wonder if he think it is bollocks. www.mumsnet.com/Talk/mumsnet_live_events/3810484-Webchat-with-Labour-leadership-contender-Sir-Keir-Starmer-MP-on-Monday-February-3-at-1-30pm

This thread is gold. Thank you so much for posting.

How to destroy a political party in a matter of days

Goosefoot · 12/02/2020 03:52

Gosh. I really wonder if there will be a mass exodus of women from the party? And if that would shake them up, or?

I suppose if you have convinced yourself that a large sector of the population are effectively demanding something akin to Jim Crow type segregation, you can't try and compromise?

BovaryX · 12/02/2020 06:22

"I am tempted to resign my membership of the Conservative party and join the Labour Party just so they can #ExpelMe"

GrinGrin

StealthPolarBear · 12/02/2020 06:31

If the reform of the GRA is on ice why does its page say they're still analysing responses etc?
Do they think we're fucking idiots?

Helmetbymidnight · 12/02/2020 06:41

its all over twitter but not a single word on fb from my political friends. Hmm

noneedtoexpelme · 12/02/2020 06:45

Goodbye Labour Party. This adult human female has had enough. No need to expel me, I resign. I hope you enjoy the wilderness years, as there will be many.

iguanadonna · 12/02/2020 07:00

They've been reminding me for months to renew my membership, but I just couldn't bring myself to do it. Today I'll write and tell them why.

NonnyMouse1337 · 12/02/2020 07:03

How does one join WPUK? Do you have to be part of a trade union?

SingingLily · 12/02/2020 07:04

"I am tempted to resign my membership of the Conservative party and join the Labour Party just so they can #ExpelMe"

Tempting indeed Grin especially as I joined the Conservatives specifically to help stop the local LibDem candidate from becoming my MP in December. Helen Belcher.

I'm not on Twitter so I can't use the hashtag.

But there is something I can do and just have: subscribe and donate to that well-known hate group, WPUK.

zanahoria · 12/02/2020 07:06

"Keir Starmer was very wishing washy on the recent Mn webchat about toeing the party line on TWAW. I wonder if he think it is bollocks"

I think he is avoiding the subject as much as possible as he knows it will alienate one side, it's a bit cowardly but he has some political nous if he can sense how controversial the issue is.

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 12/02/2020 07:07

Congrats on not having Belcher as your MP, SingingLily! I will also be sending WPUK some dosh.

thecatfromjapan · 12/02/2020 07:08

This actually came up in the Ashdown research into why Labour lost.

I was surprised: I thought it was an issue that hasn't yet reached the wider public.

The Ashown report has quantitative interviews with voters. And pronouns and women's rights is reported as being a significant part of why people feel Labour no longer represents them.

Already.

I say 'already' because I still think awareness of this issue isn't as widespread as it can be, and isn't yet impacting as much as it will.

But even in the Ashdown report, it's there. As an issue that alienated people from Labour.

Is Labour a vanguard Party, that sets an agenda in advance of popular opinion? Should it be?

On this issue, that is precisely what Labour is setting itself up as.

And the Ashdown report suggests that is a mistake.

Unfortunately, all this shows that Labour is not looking at the Ashdown report and is still in deep denial about the results of the GE.

🤦‍♀️

thecatfromjapan · 12/02/2020 07:12

I think Starmer's answers on MN suggested a position very far from that of R L-B. It indicated he would not be 'outlawing' Women's Place UK, or labelling support for Women's Place UK as transphobic.

I suspect that this is part of the reason for R L-B's coming out with this.

And we can see the problem.

Other MPs are falling behind R L-B as quick as they can - because they know many of the hardcore activists expect it.

KS knows that this is electoral death.

It's a right mess. 🤷‍♀️

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 12/02/2020 07:14

Do you happen to have a link to that report, or coverage of it, catfromjapan? I'd agree that we're not even close to full public awareness on these issues so if it's already having an impact on elections that's very interesting indeed (and supports my feeling that the only reason TRAs have been able to gain as much traction as they have has been that the public has had no idea what they were up to).

thecatfromjapan · 12/02/2020 07:19

I think this is it.

https://lordashcroftpolls.com/2020/02/diagnosis-of-defeat-labours-turn-to-smell-the-coffee/

You have to dig around. But there's a section which discusses why people feel Labour no longer represents them.

The issue of gender recognition isn't named - I suspect the researchers didn't identify it themselves - but ex-voters mention pronouns. And what they're talking about is 'gender politics'.

I don't think I've seen anyone pick up on this yet. It's still below the radar.

But it's already toxic for Labour.

Floisme · 12/02/2020 07:20

Still nothing from Keir then? Do you think they're holding him in a cellar till he cracks?

thecatfromjapan · 12/02/2020 07:21

It's absolutely, clearly a fault line dividing activists within the Party and the wider electorate outside the Party.

thecatfromjapan · 12/02/2020 07:22

I'm absolutely sure R L-B has done this in order to punch a hole in KS' Leadership bid.

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 12/02/2020 07:24

Thanks, I'll dig around a bit.

SingingLily · 12/02/2020 07:26

I read that paper from Lord Ashcroft last night, Prodigal, and as thecat says, you have to dig for it because the research is extensive but it was definitely percolating through from the focus groups.

What was striking is the sheer disconnect between the views of the Labour Party members and the disaffected Labour voters who either lent their votes in December or simply stayed at home.

Here are the relevant quotes for anyone who wants a quick summary:

Partly because of this, some also felt the party had come to embody an excessively politically correct or “woke” culture, which would be intolerant of what they considered sensible, mainstream views:

“They’re classing themselves as liberals but won’t let anyone else have a different viewpoint;”

“You’re a bigot if you don’t agree there are 125 different genders;”

“The other day Jeremy Corbyn even did his pronouns! He said, ‘my name’s Jeremy Corbyn and my pronouns are ‘him’ and ‘his.’ You can Google it!”

thecatfromjapan · 12/02/2020 07:27

I think it's hard to over estimate how cynical this is from the R L-B team.

It looks like classic virtue-signalling but it's all about busting the wheels off KS.

thecatfromjapan · 12/02/2020 07:27

Thanks, SingingLily.
