I didn't think it was possible for political discourse to get more divisive and extreme in a civilized society, but Frances Carmel Hoole, who apparently standing for election, tweeted a meme of herself threatening Joanna Cherry with a spray bottle of bleach and the term T*RF.

She has deleted it and is now complaining about the sound condemnation she is receiving on Twitter. I need to get a hammock for my face to help with the continual dropping of my jaw.

Labour really is beyond pathetic at this point, and I am going canvassing for them tomorrow.what a world we live in!

Tanith · 02/11/2019 09:07
  1. It’s appalling and has rightly been condemned.
  1. It’s Scotland: different laws on self-id, they have their own affiliated parties and elect their own candidates.
  1. Frances may be an immature young woman who shouldn’t be in that position, but she said she was sent that meme. I’d love to know who sent it to her - and who created it in the first place.
  1. Let’s not pretend that the SNP is GC and doesn’t have its own share of TRA lunatics.
  1. Having said that, Joanne Cherry is fantastic and hopefully this will give her a clear run for re-election. We certainly need her!

Some woke male trans ally. He posted on the thread where Hoole "apologised" with a DARVO.on GC feminists. See Wings Over Scotland and ForWomen Scotland who both challenged him.

Pthagonal · 02/11/2019 09:24

She may have been sent that meme, but she didn't have to repost it, especially hoping that Joanna Cherry would 'taste the rainbow'. Is she that naive that she really didn't see that as a threat?

LangCleg · 02/11/2019 09:31

“I didn't perceive this as a threat so I apologise I didn't see it that way.”

Unless the English language has lost all meaning, she's also not apologising for sending a threat to a competing candidate, but giving a metaphorical shrug of "well if you want to take offence, I can't stop you". (Which is a classic tool found in the extensive toolbox of any abuser).

Additionally, Frances can't have it both ways. Either soi disant "hate crime" is in the eye of the beholder or it isn't. What Frances did or did not perceive is irrelevant. What Joanna perceived is the only factor at play. The police and the CPS say so.

Perhaps Frances should investigate the Fair Cop campaign if she doesn't want to be a hate criminal?

MockersthefeMANist · 02/11/2019 09:35

In the 2015 wipeout, Labour's only MP in Scotland was Ian Murray in Edinburgh South, next door to Cherry. He only got back in because the SNP candidate was found out posting offensive messages online under a pseudonym.

You'd think people would learn lessons.

ScrimshawTheSecond · 02/11/2019 09:40

That's a good point, LangCleg. This would be an example of hate crime, surely? I guess women don't count when it comes to hate crime, though. Unless they are women*.

boatyardblues · 02/11/2019 09:46

Cherry is an out lesbian, so perhaps she can pursue it as a homophobic hate crime. As lesbian women make up a significant element of the GC grouping, it looks very much like indirect homophobic discrimination.

LangCleg · 02/11/2019 09:52

Cherry is an out lesbian, so perhaps she can pursue it as a homophobic hate crime.

She could, yes. And, if she did, there would be absolutely nothing Frances could do about it. Frances's motives and intentions - her "perceptions" - would be irrelevant. Joanna's perception would be all that counted. It would be counted in the hate crime statistics that wokesters like Frances love to quote.

And if Frances doesn't like the idea of being a hate criminal then perhaps she might like to do a bit of MN-style digging for Fair Cop.

Tanith · 02/11/2019 09:53

She’s a 22 year old numpty, Pthagonal Smile Yes, she really is that naive! Totally unsuited as a candidate in grown up politics, but that goes without saying.

GCAcademic · 02/11/2019 09:53

Never mind hate crime, why is this kind of behaviour from TRAs not treated as terrorism? Threatening violence to politicians and intimidating the public in pursuit of a political outcome is the very definition of terrorism.

LangCleg · 02/11/2019 09:54

And I'm just staggered that this woman has been through the Jo Cox leadership programme. It is no tribute to Jo Cox that the foundation in her name is producing politicians like Frances here. An absolute travesty and completely disrespectful to the memory of a murdered woman.

LangCleg · 02/11/2019 09:56

Well, quite.

I'm just picking up on the irony of the "perception" defence this awful woman thought would sort it.

Tanith · 02/11/2019 09:57

“ Perhaps Frances should investigate the Fair Cop campaign if she doesn't want to be a hate criminal?”

She’s more likely hiding under her duvet at the moment, having been strongly advised to stay off Twitter.

ExhaustedGrinch · 02/11/2019 10:01

Why are all these "woke" people so intolerant?!

Another Scottish Labour candidate is Alex Tiffin, Alex who was charged with assaulting a pregnant woman. www.dailyrecord.co.uk/news/politics/man-who-admitted-assaulting-pregnant-20764645

Labour really don't care about women at all, full of misogynists. That said I don't see any other parties being all that different.

zebrasdontwearbras · 02/11/2019 10:04

Well Hoole has made her account private now. I've just looked down the responses to her - and they are all critical of her, but not abusive or threatening (unlike Hoole's own tweet)

I'm assuming this is an area that is quite heavily SNP already - and Joanna Cherry seems a very able politician, and popular (barring the TRAs who hate her and send her death threats).

Hoole has come across as inexperienced and immature - probably needs to get out of her twitter bubble for a bit if she thinks that posting threatening memes will get her elected in a real life constituency.

Not a good look for Labour at all.

Yes. Cherry's work on Brexit, for example, has been absolutely stellar.

Ereshkigal · 02/11/2019 10:32

This is the man who made the meme, taking credit for it. He seems quite pleased with himself.

HandsOffMyRights · 02/11/2019 10:40

I hope he's reported to the police.

He was gloating that the meme had made it to MN.

PeterRouseTheFleshofMankind · 02/11/2019 10:50

Oh look, he is a beardy woke bro, what a fucking surprise.

What an absolute prick.

And what an absolute prick she is for sharing it as well, what the fuck was she thinking? She is standing for parliament!

ScrimshawTheSecond · 02/11/2019 10:59

So, Ian, if you happen to read this: You don't seem to understand why there has been a strong reaction to your meme. Perhaps you have no understanding of:

  1. How it feels for a woman in the public eye to be threatened by a man
  2. How spraying chemicals is evocative of acid attacks
  3. How female politicians, in particular, are threatened by violence. Not even 'literal' violence. Real violence, the kind that is dangerous.
  4. Empathy
  5. How to apologise.

I appreciate you are quite young, and surrounded by people throwing out violent 'jokes' about 'terfs' all the time. On Twitter, this is all completely par for the course.

Back in the real world, this is not acceptable. It's not okay to create an image that implies spraying someone with bleach is a good thing to do. The word 'gone' also has violent implications. Many women will recognise this as threat. If you didn't know that, I'm telling you now, so in future, please don't suggest you will spray women with bleach, as you may alarm them. 'Kay?

MrsWednesdayteatime · 02/11/2019 11:07

Meme guy seems to be a BIG fan of Mumsnet so chances are he'll see your post Scrimshaw

Datun · 02/11/2019 11:10

Dear lord. He is proud that a website populated by women, many of whom are mothers, find him and his memes alarming.

Ugh.

BarbaraStrozzi · 02/11/2019 11:11

Ian, you no doubt fancy yourself as a socially aware guy with concern for the disadvantaged and oppressed in society. Who knows you may even have at some stage worn a "this is what a feminist looks like" t-shirt

Pro tip: genuine male allies of women (and of that radical, revolutionary idea that women have human rights) do not make memes joking about violence against women.

ScrimshawTheSecond · 02/11/2019 11:15

Well, hopefully he's just unaware, rude and misguided, rather than a violent, threatening misogynist.

Not quite sure I've got the hang of this 'optimism' lark ...
