Just spotted this. 30th June. The “gender fluidity of childhood”. Giving children “queer role models”. Good Grief. www.nationalgallery.org.uk/events/drag-queen-story-time-30-06-2019

It never happened to British Airways either :

CassianAndor · 26/06/2019 12:29

His make up would freak my DD out completely.

Supersimpkin · 26/06/2019 12:33

They run these events in NY a lot - it's brilliant. The drag queen, used to the toughest of audiences, manages 200 screaming kids with aplomb - the DC love it. The tales being read are fun and funny, and the drag queens are friendly and kind.

Trans may be a hot potato politically at the mo, but this isn't. It's good clean fun.

Popchyk · 26/06/2019 12:58

Child sex offender at Cardiff Pride last year. Doing the Drag Queen stuff. Darren Sewell, under the name Crystal Couture.

www.walesonline.co.uk/news/wales-news/child-sex-offender-performed-drag-15082784

Interestingly, the venue said that they knew that Sewell was a sex offender, but booked him anyway since there would be no children around.

"Crystal Couture's official website describes the act as "for audiences large and small and of all ages" and "available for wedding, christening, birthdays, and celebrations if (sic) all types".

BigotedWoman · 26/06/2019 13:06

Stop being such a prude Popchyk, who wouldn’t want a convicted sex offender at a christening? Hmm

Popchyk · 26/06/2019 13:10

True, it is 2019 after all.

Can't believe I just kink-shamed the poor sex offender fella.

Maybe he'll do the entertainment at next Royal baby christening. In Buckingham Palace.

Right now nothing would surprise me.

BigotedWoman · 26/06/2019 13:32

Well Harry & Meghan do seem keen to be seen as woke, so you never know!

NettleTea · 26/06/2019 17:38

But people doing stuff that challenges the gender stereotype
Men who do ballet. Women wrestlers. Female scientists, male make up artists

With the possible exception of female wrestlers I'm really puzzled at the idea that the other examples are "challenging gender stereotypes". These are just things that people do.

I agree they do them. But many people still seem to struggle with these sorts of examples, and Im sure many more. And little kids too. Take a look at the results of asking kids to draw a doctor or a fire fighter in Caroline CP's invisible woman - all men.

so yes, we adults know this, but kids increasingly seem to see the world through highly gendered glasses, and these need ripping off.

TemporaryPermanent · 26/06/2019 19:35

Who is Drag Queen Story Time benefiting? Do children benefit from having stories read to them? Yes, and they'd benefit exactly as much whether the person reading wore make up and costume or if they didn't. It's certainly arguable that the make up and costume are distracting.

So if the children don't benefit, who does?

ChattyLion · 27/06/2019 08:04

People who believe in sex-based stereotypes and want to make sure kids do too?

SunsetBeetch · 06/08/2019 16:54

A man came to the library today and taught my children sexualised dancing! It was super!

Hmm

(Note to MNHQ, as this person describes himself as a drag queen, I take it as read that he understands that he is male)

truthisarevolutionaryact · 06/08/2019 18:50

Said drag queen (who has been appearing in libraries all over the country) invites children (doesn't specify it must be adults) to send them their email addresses if they want special colouring sheets ffs.
Safeguarding anyone?

dancingcamper · 06/08/2019 19:11

Anyone still wondering how Jimmy Savile got away with it? People don't want to believe their eyes.

There is an extra part to that Tweet in that <a class="break-all" href="https://web.archive.org/web/20190806184026/twitter.com/Samuel_Hunt/status/1145782745202876417?s=20" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">they've even uploaded him teaching you how to twerk. FGS, libraries the length and breadth of the country are doing this.

HermioneWeasley · 06/08/2019 19:48

And in a few years people will say “how did it happen in plain sight?!” And officials will say “lessons will be learned”

SunsetBeetch · 06/08/2019 20:05

Yes truthis , it's like Munroe Bergdorf all over again!

Who’s having an amazing summer holiday?! If you’re looking for things to do check if #MamaGsSpaceChase is coming to a your local library!

Or you could always do some Mama G inspired arts and crafts!

Local Labour Councillor posts "roll eyes" gifs in response to people's concerns. (Note who he's with in the photo he's using as a banner)

On the plus side - it's a small plus - the actor who plays Mama G did tweet that he was bothered by a performance of Goldilocks having an all male cast when the story is a female lead.

I said it was a small plus.

Also one of his own songs he performs includes the line "I'm not too white, I'm not too black" and something about farting glitter which I'm sure is hilarious unless you're the one that needs to hoover that stuff up.

Why is this stuff in libraries all over the country? I know it originated from a gay man in Bristol but now it's like a national tale over for the summer holidays. The theme is 'a journey through space' or similar, I mean why don't you dress in a space suit and do the moonwalk (ok not MJ) or funny non-gravity walking. I don't get it.

SonicVersusGynaephobia · 06/08/2019 22:05

So an adult. Male in sexualised womanface goes to a children's library and teaches children how to "twerk"?

And lots of men think this is great.

And this is all happening in plain sight.

How did we get here.

Goosefoot · 07/08/2019 00:35

Lots of women think it's great. We had one here recently. No twerking, at least, was involved, just story reading, but... why?

It's all so weird.
