Do children need queer role models? Is it possible for children to be queer?

SpitefulBreasts · 26/06/2019 06:14

It's about teaching children that it's really quite normal for a man to dress up as a parody of a woman. It's teaching children that it's fine and definitely ok to mock, belittle and generally take the piss out of women. It's teaching children that women definitely don't matter.

Janie143 · 26/06/2019 06:43

It is a recruitment ground be for more "Desmond is Amazing" type performers?

Perhaps refer back to this?

SpitefulBreasts · 26/06/2019 07:39

Yes Jackie Holyoake
I read that transgender trend article and I definitely think that it's all about getting rid of sexual boundaries around children.

TimeLady · 26/06/2019 07:46

Why? Some have seen the opportunity is there right now to go public with their kinks and fetishes, so have jumped on the bandwagon, because you can now denounce anyone objecting as a bigot and have the establishment, inc the police, support you.

The Royal Opera House is also having a Drag Queen story time as part of it's up coming Pride event for families.

NellieEllie · 26/06/2019 07:55

This is a session with autistic children. All I would say is, no I don’t like it, but he does wear just outrageous, rather than typical kink clothes, and this seems less inappropriate than the American stuff....

With special guest Olly Pike of Pop‘n’Olly.

Oh, fabulous. Pop'n'Olly of No Outsiders fame. Pop'n'Olly of the YouTube video encouraging very young children to fill out the government GRA consultation using answers pre-supplied by Stonewall.

BigotedWoman · 26/06/2019 09:01

Apart from the inappropriateness, when I was young I was terrified of the drag queens I saw. Will little children actually enjoy it?

NettleTea · 26/06/2019 09:12

surely the best way to show fluidity of gender and role models is to have people that the kids might identify with because they are just normal people. But people doing stuff that challenges the gender stereotype.
Men who do ballet. Women wrestlers. Female scientists, male make up artists. But just normal 'nothing to see here' people. That would probably have the biggest impact as its something that kids would say 'I can do that'

SarahTancredi · 26/06/2019 09:19

I cant speak for anyone elses kids but mine hate people dressed up in costumes. No day out pics here shaking hands with chase from paw patrol. They even hate the one in Franky and Benny's when the dress up and bring out the cake

Theres no reason for it. They have not had any bad experiences with anyone in costumes. They just hate them

I don't think I'd get them within 15 feet of a drag queen.

LassOfFyvie · 26/06/2019 09:21

With the possible exception of female wrestlers I'm really puzzled at the idea that the other examples are "challenging gender stereotypes". These are just things that people do.

They also have a drag king and it is only one item in a very full programme, which includes a section on "trouser roles" in opera ( male characters sung by female contraltos)

ChattyLion · 26/06/2019 09:26

Small kids are often scared by tall, broad figures in caricature costume and face make up so I would be interested to see how they deal with that issue in a child-centred way.

Juells · 26/06/2019 09:33

The very last thing any parent should want for their child is a 'queer role model' :( :( :(

Juells · 26/06/2019 09:36

You'd really think that at this stage organisations would understand when they're being groomed. Confused

SarahTancredi · 26/06/2019 09:37

chatty
I hope they dont.

Adults talking themselves out of feeling what they are feeling "to be nice" is a huge problem. It stops us from acting on things and seeing what's in front of us.

Kids haven't reached that part yet. Being unable to identify someone and assess their surroundings is a natural process. No one who wants to erase that us anyone you want around your kids

PickledGulag · 26/06/2019 09:39

Just a little blackface so that's ok then.

This is the overton window shift. This is what happens when safeguarding is nudged aside bit by bit. Fetish and children do not belong in the same room or sentence. Force acceptance through over familiarity, punish, exclude and mock boring hateful dissenters. Does this behaviour sound familiar?

SarahTancredi · 26/06/2019 09:40

Sorry messed up. Being able to identify someone is important to them.

Being unable to do that rightly makes them uneasy

nauticant · 26/06/2019 11:16

What is the gender fluidity of childhood?

It's a reference to the innocence of childhood. It's a valuable commodity because it presents an unparalleled indoctrination opportunity.

Popchyk · 26/06/2019 11:27

Two convicted child sex offenders did Drag Queen Story Time at Houston Public Library. The library didn't bother to check their backgrounds beforehand.

Cos it never happens Hmm

LangCleg · 26/06/2019 11:36

Clearly not.

DpWm · 26/06/2019 12:15

I used to be really scared of clowns.
It looks like drag "artists" are becoming the new clowns.
At least clowns did jokes and magic, didn't just take the piss out of women for fun.
