This isn't some long ago "oh it was in the past" incident (not that that would make it any better).

This was the police being called to what sounds very like a domestic incident last friday. Right in the middle of the campaign of Boris " the favourite" Johnson to become Prime Minister.

What the actual fuck?

I think if you can't fight someone on their political life and have to resort to their personal life it's a bit pathetic.

Well lots of people agree with you on that point hence we end up with the likes of Trump and Johnson. I however hate the pair of them and am embarrassed we end up with leaders so devoid of morals.

Whatever the fine detail, Boris is under pressure and under intense scrutiny. He doesn’t appear to be coping well

i think this is an interesting point. do we think Theresa May had screaming matches with Phillip and tossed red wine around number 10 in a temper tantrum?

nauticant · 22/06/2019 07:50

MockerstheFeManist mentioned Darius Guppy. In case anyone on the thread doesn't know the reference, it's to this telephone conversation:

TimeLady · 22/06/2019 07:50

I have a vote. And like others members, I'm paying attention.

BernardBlacksWineIcelolly · 22/06/2019 07:50

and YY to Boris having no actual driving morals or aims, beyond 'Boris for PM'

I agree with a PP though, whoever takes this job on is going to end up looking like an incompetent twerp because the deck is stacked, there's no way to win. it's the only thing that cheers me up about Boris being a shoe in to be the next PM of the United Kingdom (ffs)

merrymouse · 22/06/2019 07:57

So how do you stand on Martin Luther King and John Kennedy? Both serial womanisers. Both great leaders

You are asking whether King’s treatment of women negates his legacy, but Johnson has no legacy to destroy.

Calling the problem ‘womanising’ misses the point. In 2019 I am more concerned about who has suffered harm, and the evidence shows that on multiple occasions he has prioritised his own selfish desires over protecting his family from the fall out of his actions.

Even on a purely cynical political level, he doesn’t have the self control to go to Chequers for a meeting and simply concentrate on politics.

merrymouse · 22/06/2019 08:00

Also the problem here is not ‘womanising’ but what appeared to be domestic violence.

BernardBlacksWineIcelolly · 22/06/2019 08:07

i've just realised that the other choice is Jeremy Fucking 'rhyming slang' Hunt

jesus christ. it feels like the end of days

nauticant · 22/06/2019 08:08

There's a few threads about this and I'm seeing a number of lines being put out in support of Johnson:

  1. Carrie Symonds is colluding in this;
  2. it's the fault of the woman who made the recording;
  3. the Police were right to lie to The Guardian; and
  4. the ever-reliable "it's all lies".
dancingcamper · 22/06/2019 08:08

All we can be reasonably certain of is that an argument took place at the address where they live and the recording evidences involvement of a male and female.

If it wasn't Boris and Carrie arguing at the place they live, wouldn't they come out and say who it was?

QuentinWinters · 22/06/2019 08:13

Carrie is in PR, do we really think that she would allow a domestic to be overheard by the neighbours? Sorry but sceptical and cynical if it's possible to be both at the same time.
WHAT?? Shes in PR so would be able to control her boyfriend being a noisy shouty drunk? Shes in PR so able to stop herself feeling fight or flight reflex like any other animal under threat? Shes in PR so it's not possible she would be with an abuser?

Fucks sake. That is one of the most ridiculous victim blaming things I've read on here.

nauticant · 22/06/2019 08:14

I don't expect this to make a difference in the leadership contest but what I want to see is him elected with as much of his character revealed as possible. So then when he turns out to be a really shit PM anyone making the excuse of "but how could we possibly have known!" will look like an idiot.

Might be a good time to watch this

nauticant · 22/06/2019 08:18

Anyway, there's an ex-colleague (Sonia Purnell) of Johnson's being interviewed on Radio 4 now and she's saying that when she shared an office with him she was scared of his temper.

dottiedodah · 22/06/2019 08:20

The fact that BJ and his GF had a late night row is not really news. Many couples argue ,esp if the have a bit too much to drink and the pressure is probably on at the moment.I am more interested in his plans for our country TBH!.

QuentinWinters · 22/06/2019 08:23

Many couples don't argue to the point where theneighbours call the police.....I have had to call the police for a neighbour before and it was a hard decision because you gave to see your neighbours every day and potentially you've got involved in something that's none of your business and embarrasses everyone.
The fact the neighbours felt they needed to call the police shows this was more than a standard argument between couples.
I hope Carrie is OK.

According to the reports, she asked him several times to leave her flat. He did not do this but carried on trying to ‘calm her down’ - insinuates she was hysterical whereas he should simply have left the situation at her request. He has enough money to check into a hotel.

And I agree entirely with comments that this situation is unimaginable with Theresa May.

When I was married, I ended up very shouty. The relationship was abusive and controlling but he also turned things round on me when I questioned or argued back that I was being aggressive and various other things. It was horrible in so many ways. Even now, it is impossible to question anything to him without it being turned back on me times ten. For me shouting was and is a panic reaction, and I need to remove myself from the situation to calm down. Usually to have a good cry for ten minutes. So the thing that stands out here is that she was asking him to go and he was not, and she was getting more and more distressed.

Juells · 22/06/2019 08:30

Yesterday (or rather the night before) provided an astonishing insight into how entitled some males are. They happened to be Tory males, but that's only because they're the focus at the moment.

Fleetheart · 22/06/2019 08:31

It’s the fact that on the actual day when he got the good news that he will most likely be the next PM, he was not relaxed and calm, he was drinking and shouting and things were being smashed. Isn’t very reassuring for us is it?

Fleetheart · 22/06/2019 08:33

Of course it’s unimaginable with Theresa May, or David Cameron, or Tony Blair or actually anyone with any maturity. A fucked up private life is not a good springboard for leading a country.

dancingcamper · 22/06/2019 08:33

Lovely that pissed up rowing with your much smaller partner is normalised in your world

This, many times over. She's now getting the message loud and clear that what was recorded is completely normal and nothing to worry about. If she moves in to number 10 with him she's pretty much locked into that relationship until he's no longer prime minister. How much social pressure would she be under to stay with him?

LangCleg · 22/06/2019 08:41

Hard leave voters, don't exactly like feminism and yearn for an era where 'women knew their place'. So this actually is good pr in the most important circles, for Johnson.

And if not quite "good", at least irrelevant.

The Tory party membership, including its women members, is so fixated on achieving Brexit as as soon as possible, that it will ignore just about any scandal if taking notice of it meant picking a Remain-voting leadership candidate in Hunt.

LizzieSiddal · 22/06/2019 08:46

He’s a bully isn’t he. What a great trait for the PM of our country.Hmm
