Mermaids response to piece in Mail tomorrow

Looking forward to seeing what drops

www.mermaidsuk.org.uk/press-enquiry-from-the-mail-on-sunday-25th-may-2019.html

We are very proud of the training we offer to schools and we have a proven record of helping teachers to support vulnerable children who simply want to get along with their lessons like any of their classmates.

We are disappointed to find that a school governor has made a covert recording of our training because our presentations are not held in secret and all of the scientific and legal information we offer is publicly available and well-tested.

We are surprised to see that a Church of England rector is complaining about our training when we are included in the CoE guidance on support for transgender people, which can be found here.

Part of the work of Mermaids is giving training talks to schools. These talks are well received and are an important part of how we promote an inclusive and informed approach to trans children and those who support them.

We have been contacted by the Mail on Sunday who are doing an article about one such talk. This post is our response, in accordance with our policy of posting our replies to media queries for the benefit of anyone interested in our activities.

Ah! Doing the paper round tomorrow

GrumpyCatLives · 25/05/2019 16:22

The Mail scores another goal!

It’s good it’s not the Times again. I’ve grown to respect the Times, but they do report on this the most, so it’s good to see another outlet reporting!

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 25/05/2019 16:23

The rest of that press statement is worth a read too...

EweSurname · 25/05/2019 16:24

The latest research published on this topic by Kristina Olson found that:

It's nothing to do with stereotypes? Right you are

Young, socially transitioned transgender children between 3 and 5 years old are just as likely as gender‐typical children to:

(a) Prefer toys, and clothing culturally associated with their expressed gender,
(b) dress in a stereotypically gendered outfit,
(c) say they are more similar to children of their gender than to children of the opposite gender

I sense an attempt of damage limitation in that post.

Funny how they shout about the law being on their side, but then state, ^On the law, we stand by our ‘understanding’ of all the relevant law.* Is that a hint that if they’re told that they’re wrong, then they’re going to say ‘but we thought it meant...’

aprilviolets · 25/05/2019 16:33

I'd love to hear the recording. To be honest, I'm shocked they're allowed to go into schools in this way, really shocked.

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 25/05/2019 16:44

Really? So why do people have to covertly record then?

Datun · 25/05/2019 16:47

Really? So why do people have to covertly record then?

And why be disappointed that someone has taped it, covertly or overtly? You should be delighted.

KarenTheCashRegister · 25/05/2019 16:53

It’s about time that Mermaids was banned from schools. They are another Kids Company brewing and head teachers need to back away from this shit show.

TheSteveMilliband · 25/05/2019 16:54

Guesses for what they've said? I'd put money on "it's illegal not to let kids used changing facilities of self identified gender" and "it's scientifically proven boys can be trapped in a girls body" (and vice versa)

NeurotrashWarrior · 25/05/2019 16:58

This should be interesting.

KarenTheCashRegister · 25/05/2019 16:59

The Mail on Sunday sell over a million copies a week. No idea how big it is on the internet but safe to say it is huge.

My advice to any school governor or headteacher who have Mermaids booked would be to cancel because there are going to be a huge amount of furious parents.

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 25/05/2019 17:00

"Scientific" bwahahahaha!

justju · 25/05/2019 17:00

Ooh, interesting.

MsMcWibble · 25/05/2019 17:05

Ha ha ha. Looking forward to this.
Mermaids should not be allowed anywhere near schools.

theOtherPamAyres · 25/05/2019 17:05

Mermaids has written down its interpretation of the Equality Act.

Guess what? The interpretation is wrong.

I hope the Mail is able to explore that interpretation.

It looks like Mermaids was asked to comment or explain specific statements made by the trainer. They say that they want an audio recording before they'll do that. I note that they don't deny that the statements were made.

KarenTheCashRegister · 25/05/2019 17:06

They’re not a credible organisation and shouldn’t have access to other people children.

ThePurportedDoctoress · 25/05/2019 17:20

And why be disappointed that someone has taped it, covertly or overtly? You should be delighted.

Exactly. How odd.
Maybe they've realised that consistency is not their strong point.

BernardBlacksWineIcelolly · 25/05/2019 17:27

Ooh, I am with PILs tomorrow who religiously buy the mail

Very much looking forward to reading this

LangCleg · 25/05/2019 17:46

Placemarking.

No time to comment!

Nightowlreturns · 25/05/2019 17:57

I can’t believe that they are allowed to go into schools like this, it is so regressive and plain wrong about the law. Who is responsible for checking that organisations such as Mermaids and Stonewall are training the law correctly? It must be someone’s job to ensure that any outside companies are following regulations, who is it? The education secretary or local authorities?

Sunkisses · 25/05/2019 18:05

This is the 'training' that has been funded by the National Lottery, right? I predict the National Lottery will come to deeply regret that disgraceful decision to hand over £500,000 funding for Mermaids's 'gender jelly baby training'. There's going to be a whole load of these badly trained lunatics , funded by the Lottery, going into schools and other institutions up and down the country with their dangerous 'training'

OldCrone · 25/05/2019 18:07

It must be someone’s job to ensure that any outside companies are following regulations, who is it? The education secretary or local authorities?

Good question. Who is responsible for checking what children are being taught, and what independent organisations are saying when they go into schools? Is it the government or is it each individual school? Who is ultimately responsible when children come home from school saying they've been taught that they can change sex and that they might have been born in the wrong body?

ILoveMaxiBondi · 25/05/2019 18:18

Also placemarking. I agree with whoever said it sounds like damage limitation.
