Mermaids response to piece in Mail tomorrow

Looking forward to seeing what drops

www.mermaidsuk.org.uk/press-enquiry-from-the-mail-on-sunday-25th-may-2019.html

We are very proud of the training we offer to schools and we have a proven record of helping teachers to support vulnerable children who simply want to get along with their lessons like any of their classmates.

We are disappointed to find that a school governor has made a covert recording of our training because our presentations are not held in secret and all of the scientific and legal information we offer is publicly available and well-tested.

We are surprised to see that a Church of England rector is complaining about our training when we are included in the CoE guidance on support for transgender people, which can be found here.

Part of the work of Mermaids is giving training talks to schools. These talks are well received and are an important part of how we promote an inclusive and informed approach to trans children and those who support them.

We have been contacted by the Mail on Sunday who are doing an article about one such talk. This post is our response, in accordance with our policy of posting our replies to media queries for the benefit of anyone interested in our activities.

(but trans is not my field at all)
Then why have you sat and argued a point that you don't know enough about?

ethnicity is biological,

It is.

Michelleoftheresistance · 02/06/2019 12:52

The train now derailing at platform 4 is the Women Shut Up Express, calling at all stations to Its Just Too Boring To Go Over All This Shit Again. And Again. And Again. In The Hope Most Posters Give Up and Leave.

Passengers are advised to disembark and take the coach to There Was An OP In Here Somewhere.

Agreed. The lengths people will go to entertain the idea that humans can change sex, or that you can choose your sex.

Being unable to define the word Italian, is one of the more bizarre attempts tho.

Ereshkigal · 02/06/2019 12:56

Goodness me you're naive, camaleon. And very cavalier with other people's established rights.

Ereshkigal · 02/06/2019 12:58

but trans is not my field at all).

That's abundantly clear. I bet at least half the women on this thread know more about transgender politics, ideology and organisations than you do.

CaptainKirksSpookyghost · 02/06/2019 12:58

I'm still waiting to be told what rights a Trans-woman has that a man doesn't?

Ereshkigal · 02/06/2019 12:59

So basically this all just boils down to transing dead people and "why are you soo meaaaan!"

That's nice.

Ereshkigal · 02/06/2019 13:00

We need bewilderness here with the Rules of Misogyny.

Ereshkigal · 02/06/2019 13:02

Sex, race and class are not identities. They are sources structural oppression. Gender is the means by which the hierarchy of the sexes is sustained and justified.

This.

camaleon · 02/06/2019 13:02

Saying that ethnicity is biological implies you have not even read the most basic definition of ethnicity nor you understand your own statement. I am happy to acknowledge my ignorance in most areas. I am trying to learn, and as I have also explained I have spent more time reading and listening than trying to put my voice out there. Although I have questions and I am curious.
I will stay outside your trains and platforms.

CaptainKirksSpookyghost · 02/06/2019 13:03

We've all done it, waded in on a subject we knew nothing about really only to have our arse handed to us....

You probably heard "Mumsnet are transphobes" then came here expecting to find a bunch of ignorant girlies talking about Transpeople, but instead found an intelligent group of biologists, Doctors and parents who actually know more about what's going on than you do....

when it happened to me I even frantically searched around google thinking "this can't be right" only to find it all was.

Then i educated myself and stayed, like so many other people have.

CaptainKirksSpookyghost · 02/06/2019 13:04

Saying that ethnicity is biological implies you have not even read the most basic definition of ethnicity nor you understand your own statement

Then educate. Are we mixing up Race and ethnicity?
What do they mean?

Educate, as we are.

Michelleoftheresistance · 02/06/2019 13:06

What's the point in trying to take it apart? The bottom line here:

Poster: TWAW and you lot will have to bow down to that some time.

GC women: Yeah, not ever, and here's why.

There is nowhere to go with this. And when you have a poster who is dedicatedly posting over and over and over again, very frequently, ensuring that the whole conversation now centres on them, is obviously entrenched in their position and recognises women here aren't ever going to persuaded otherwise....

either they've got a need for conflict and are here to get their needs met by using MNetters

or they're having fun with the Mr Logical/Just Explain Yourselves Properly To Me misogynist thing as men so often do on MN when they're bored - also using women

or they're working hard to stop a conversation they don't want in a public space or to shut down a thread that is saying things they really don't want pointed out, and bore everyone into shutting up and going away because there's no justifiable reason to get HQ to kill it.

Isn't ethnicity genetic? I would also like to understand why it isn't biological.

CaptainKirksSpookyghost · 02/06/2019 13:07

I see google tells me ethnicity is based on shared ancestry, is this correct?

CaptainKirksSpookyghost · 02/06/2019 13:11

Isn't ethnicity genetic? I would also like to understand why it isn't biological.

I assumed so, as there are Ethnicity based Genetic screenings for cystic fibrosis.

JessicaWakefieldSV · 02/06/2019 13:12

Saying that ethnicity is biological implies you have not even read the most basic definition of ethnicity nor you understand your own statement.

I understand very well. You, however, do not.
Ethnicity, scientists are more commonly referring to it as ancestry now, is biological. Just because the lines between ethnicity are more blurred or aren’t as different as we once thought, does not mean it is entirely socially constructed. I have no doubt I understand it, and the complexities, a lot better than you. Apart from differences we can clearly see with our eyes, it is also accurate to state we are different, slightly, based on where or who we come from.

The suggestion someone can identify as Māori, is incredibly offensive and it’s roots are based in racism.

camaleon · 02/06/2019 13:13

You probably heard "Mumsnet are transphobes" then came here expecting to find a bunch of ignorant girlies talking about Transpeople, but instead found an intelligent group of biologists, Doctors and parents who actually know more about what's going on than you do....

I have been around for more than a decade. You know nothing about me. You can keep your assumptions if somehow it makes you feel better and reinforces whatever your arguments are.

I have not problem being 'silenced' as you like to call it by other women here or anywhere else if I don't fit. For many reasons (and I am definitely not an ignorant in that field) I will not spend a minute of my time engaging with people who deny gender as a social construct and defend ethnicity or 'Britishness' as biological, because it is clearly supported in a 'belief' that no rational argument could dismantle.

NotTerfNorCis · 02/06/2019 13:14

So what is it that makes them trans?
MBP? (not sure if we're allowed to mention that on here)

Almost certainly in many childhood cases.

CaptainKirksSpookyghost · 02/06/2019 13:15

I have been around for more than a decade. You know nothing about me. You can keep your assumptions if somehow it makes you feel better and reinforces whatever your arguments are.

I was talking about myself.

I will not spend a minute of my time engaging with people who deny gender as a social construct

We don't, it is a social construct. Sex is not.

CaptainKirksSpookyghost · 02/06/2019 13:16

I know a lot about myself.

JessicaWakefieldSV · 02/06/2019 13:17

I am laughing at the assertion that you’re being rational.

OldCrone · 02/06/2019 13:17

I will not spend a minute of my time engaging with people who deny gender as a social construct

Who has done that?

CaptainKirksSpookyghost · 02/06/2019 13:18

I have not problem being 'silenced' as you like to call it

I just want to point out, never said this either.
YOu are half reading posts and filling in blanks with made up bits.
