I can’t believe what I’ve just watched. Eddie Izzard is on Joe Rogan saying ALL bathrooms should be gender neutral and completely dismissed the concerns women have that Joe brought up. He dismissed it as “people always complain when there’s change”

The whole thing is so selfish and entitled.

As is the pacifying, de-escalating smile, which males interpret as either she didn't clock me or she was quite happy with my presence when actually the truth is quite the opposite.

Yes. I remember the first time I used that - I was nine years old, on my way home from Sunday school and was confronted by a boy who lived on my street who was a violent bully.

He still thumped me.

I concur. Our brains are processing every obvious and minute marker and it's almost instantaneous. It's amazing, really. Evolution really is fascinating. This must be a skill honed over millennia.

And especially when man is disguised as female - for whatever reason. There is an extra layer of why?

This too. So many girls, now women, have this experience.

The bloke in the dress always stuck out like a sore thumb
but now the bloke in the dress has attitude, he's like 'come on make my day punk, one word from you and I'm going to start screeching about being dead named'🙄

I used to think/know that transwomen were no threat to women. Not any more because I've seen Maria McLachlan get punched in the face, I've seen those really intimidating people at the JamJar, I've read all the threats on twitter.

I now think that transwomen are more of a danger than men, statistically speaking.

Missingstreetlife · 08/05/2019 09:20

You have to distinguish between old style transexual and modern transactivist, which the activists don't want you to do. Transwomen (&intersex) gay or straight, with or without surgery or certificate who just want to live in their preferred gender are now rejecting generic trans label (see Miranda Yardley) and support women's rights, or just minding own biz.
The newer type of trans people includes non binary, and agp, and some who may be confused lesbians. Some are reasonable and some support self ID and are extremely hostile to any debate. Agp is a sexual orientation and not a gender preference, this is where the problems start. Some say they are lesbians and want to have PIV sex with lesbian women.

LangCleg · 08/05/2019 09:27

There is an extra layer of why?

The Uncanny Valley effect. And it signals extra danger (due to perceived deception) not less danger.

BernardBlacksWineIcelolly · 08/05/2019 09:30

Yes. I was in a ladies loo at the weekend where two workmen were fixing something. I was completely fine with it because I knew why they were there.

But if they’d been dressed to comply with feminine stereotypes? Completely different kettle of fish

FloralBunting · 08/05/2019 10:20

Yes. Male people can be alarming enough in unexpected places. If dressed in what we understand to be a feminine manner and in a female space, our subconscious will start alerting us to a situation where someone is attempting to deceive us. Simple as that, really.

Hearhere · 08/05/2019 10:37

A man claiming to be a lesbian and insisting he should be able to have sex with lesbians
This is the quintessential wolf in sheep's clothing

I doubt that there's much to distinguish, to be honest.

A male person in a female space is still ignoring women's boundaries regardless of the motivation.

DodoPatrol · 08/05/2019 14:29

I don't think it's just the Uncanny Valley effect. I think it's also that dressing to fit a female stereotype highlights the differences between male and female, and throws them into relief.

So, India Wotsit looks like a gentle-featured, feminine man on earlier photos, but a very masculine and hard-featured 'woman' on current ones; LM looks exceptionally stringy for a girl; and let's not talk about Heather Peto.

Meanwhile, even slim girls in boy-style school uniform look like they suddenly have huge hips, because you aren't expecting that curve there; and my misguided white friend who likes to wear saris looks ashy-pale with a hint of grey, rather than her usual English beige.

DodoPatrol · 08/05/2019 14:32

Though maybe that IS the Uncanny Valley effect? Confused myself now!

Childrenofthestones · 08/05/2019 16:38

Izzard is something of an irritating twat.
I wouldn't be surprised if his disastrous appearance just on question time just before the referendum convinced fence sitters to get their arses down to the polling booth and vote yes, in numbers big enough to tip the balance of the vote.

MrGHardy · 08/05/2019 16:43

So why did people complain when there was a 'change' in Brunei about homosexuality? Same logic applies, no Eddy?

Lottapianos · 09/05/2019 15:51

Jesus, hes really pitiful in that interview. Has he given any thought whatsoever to any of this? Perfect example of having a mind so open that your brain falls out

Important thread discussing history of transactivism, AngryAttackKittens wrote:
"I'm going to point every "but the nice, harmless old school transsexuals whose movement has been unfairly appropriated by the nasty transgender people" person to this thread from now on.

All the same elements we're seeing now were there in that old BBC roundtable from the 70s with the 4 transwomen, the politician, and the doctor. None of this is new."

How? Some of the activists who have got us into this mess are "old style transsexuals". If you mean surgery, hormones etc., it's not a requirement for gender reassignment.

SirVixofVixHall · 10/05/2019 13:08

Uncanny Valley, yes.

DH in his early twenties was boyish and pretty- clear skin, pink cheeks and long lashes, long hair. I once persuaded him to let me put make up on him out of curiosity, but as dodo says above, in fact it accentuated everything masculine in his face, threw his maleness into relief. He suddenly looked much more manly, less boyish. It was amusing and interesting to see how much difference it made.
Women need to be able to recognise men in order to improve their survival chances.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 10/05/2019 17:22

Males without and facial surgery done - and I’ll put my neck out here - never pass. Is it the skin maybe?
