Mentioned before, I know, but quite a punchy headline today

Crikey, the Herald's not sitting on the fence, is it?!

Popchyk · 22/04/2019 09:08

Yes, very punchy headline.

But there can be no cries of transphobia because those are the words that Glasgow Life uses itself.

www.glasgowlife.org.uk/media/4196/sports-transgender-policy.pdf

"Transgender people may or may not choose to alter their bodies hormonally and/or surgically".

Transgender people includes:

"Cross-dressing people (who cross-dress because they feel more comfortable expressing themselves in particular feminine or masculine clothing)".

"Please use the Hate Crime Reporting Incident protocol to report incidences of violence or abuse against transgender customers or staff".

The Guidance is very clear that no man will ever be asked by staff to leave a female changing room and that complaints from women will either be dismissed or that the women will be reported to the police.

Really would not want to be a member of staff there. Your employers are not going to support you if you try to keep women and children safe.

Significantown · 22/04/2019 09:09

Foesn’t the article slso say that when anyone complains, staff have been told to fill in the hate crime form? Women-keep quiet or you will be criminals!

R0wantrees · 22/04/2019 09:13

I've just read this.
Seems to have gone further than the 're-education' part of (since withdrawn after #ManFriday exposure) Swim England's policy:

(extract from OP article)

"It adds that the policy includes: “Cross-dressing people (who cross dress because they feel more comfortable expressing themselves in masculine or feminine clothing).”

The guidelines say any customers who object, should have the policy “sensitively” explained to them.

“Some customers may complain if they feel that someone whom they think of being of the opposite sex is in their changing room. This is understandable and it requires sensitive explanation of .... our policy of trying to facilitate equal access within our venues.”

*But such customers may be unlikely to get a sympathetic hearing, as in the same section staff are urged to “use the Hate Crime Reporting Form for any incidents”.

Shock
Popchyk · 22/04/2019 09:14

Yes, it's a short document but it does go into detail about how to dismiss complaints from women.

Interesting that they are very clearly anticipating complaints. So they know that this isn't going to be popular. But they're doing it anyway.

  1. Customer Complaints

Some customers may complain if they feel that someone whom they think of being of the opposite sex is in their changing room. This is understandable and it requires sensitive explanation of transgender, the law – the Equality Act (2010), and of our policy of trying to facilitate equal access within our venues. Customers can be directed to the Policy and Research Team on the contact number below if they want to know more or are still unhappy with the explanation.

  1. Reporting of Incidents

Please use the Hate Crime Reporting Incident protocol to report incidences of violence or abuse against transgender customers or staff. This is different from the general venue Incident Reporting Form. See the link below: glintranet/supportservices/policy-research-development/policydevelopment/equalities/anti-harassmentprocedures/Documents/Hate%20Crime%20Incident%20Log%20Pro-Forma.doc

R0wantrees · 22/04/2019 09:14

Apologies for bold fail:

"But such customers may be unlikely to get a sympathetic hearing, as in the same section staff are urged to “use the Hate Crime Reporting Form for any incidents”.

Prawnofthepatriarchy · 22/04/2019 09:18

Sounds like it might be time for some religious/community leaders to point out that this new policy bars women from some faiths/communities from participating in what used to be women only sessions.

mummmy2017 · 22/04/2019 09:20

I wonder what would happen if all the women clubbed together to book a pool section and just worse trunks....

Popchyk · 22/04/2019 09:22

The document rather neatly demonstrates the balance of power at play.

Those people who are not allowed to make a complaint - women and children

Those people who are allowed to make a complaint - men who wish to access female spaces

Whisky2014 · 22/04/2019 09:22

The women who use these facilities should boycott them. Hit them where it hurts...the pocket.

MrsSnippyPants · 22/04/2019 09:25

I’m with mummy2017

I think I would gather together a group of brave women and all go swimming in trunks, making sure to tip off a friendly journalist.

should have the policy “sensitively” explained to them

Yeah, right.

Women really need to start going on strike.

mummmy2017 · 22/04/2019 09:27

We can take in one of the blow up balls and play catch. So want to do this now

Whisky2014 · 22/04/2019 09:29

Im pregnant. I so want to go and enter male changing rooms, swan around half naked and go for a swim whilst declaring I am a man. But unfortunately, I'm sure some of the guys woukd like it...

ReSistingPink · 22/04/2019 09:30

Boycott the place. Boycott their vendors.

Let them shut their doors for good when half of their members don't renew/stop attending.

Places that do not put the safety of women and children first do not even deserve a cheeky protest, that will only get them more media attention.

Cold shoulder. Finish them.

OldCrone · 22/04/2019 09:30

This is understandable and it requires sensitive explanation of transgender, the law – the Equality Act (2010), and of our policy of trying to facilitate equal access within our venues.

I'd ask them to show me the part of the EA which says that crossdressing men should have access to female facilities.

Ereshkigal · 22/04/2019 09:32

It could be construed as sexual harassment, in fact.

R0wantrees · 22/04/2019 09:33

It must be about a year ago that the first #ManFriday action took place?

'Why ManFriday?'

"Below is the full text of the speech made by ManFriday’s Media Officer at a Women’s Place UK meeting on 17th May 2018.

My name is Hannah Clarke.

I support the rights of women and girls.

Men do not belong in female spaces.

A woman cannot have a penis.

I am not afraid to speak the truth.

I am here tonight to talk to you because of my involvement in the ManFriday movement. I’m sure that most of you will have heard of us, but for those who haven’t I’ll start with a brief overview.

I’ve called ManFriday a movement, I think a better word might be concept. (continues)

This all came about when Amy Desir took it upon herself to address the ludicrous guidance Swim England produced to engage trans people in swimming. This guidance, soundly rejected by the good ladies of Mumsnet, included such gems as telling us women who object to penises in their changing rooms require education, whilst our boobs should be covered at all times for fear of causing offence. Amy started a Mumsnet thread one Friday morning in February telling us that she had arranged a meeting at her local pool to discuss her inclusion in men only swimming sessions as a self identified man in accordance with the guidance.

This thread inspired a whole lot of us – around 160 at the last count – to get behind the concept and thus ManFriday was born. We started with a Facebook page where we plan our protests and share resources and now have a website, a very active (and funny) twitter account, and a whole load of unconnected women joining in on Twitter every Friday using the hashtag ManFriday.

I joined after seeing Amy’s thread coincided with me wanting to be able to do something. I had attended the Woman’s Place meeting in London in February and was in awe of all the women there. I was too shy to put my hand up and talk – I didn’t feel like I had anything to say at all, but I think might make up for that now." (continues)

LangCleg · 22/04/2019 09:34

Remember the Swim England transgender guidance that inspired Man Friday? Women had to be educated about the feminine trans penis. Masculine trans breasts had to be covered up to save the blushes of men.

BruceAndNosh · 22/04/2019 09:35

Some customers may complain if they feel that someone whom they think of being of the opposite sex is in their changing room
They ARE of the opposite sex, even if they consider themselves of the same gender.

Ereshkigal · 22/04/2019 09:35

Yes, Lang. Exactly this type of thing.

Whisky2014 · 22/04/2019 09:42

Was it a trans person who write the policy? The article states they've interpreted the EA incorrectly.

Ereshkigal · 22/04/2019 09:46

I'd be willing to bet that either a trans person or a trans organisation had a hand in writing it.
