Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

If Glinner is such an 'ally' why is he working only with white men?

I'm a GC feminist, but I do find all the fawning around Graham Linehan to be pathetic. He's barely given a peep about women's rights in the past, and suddenly he's jumped on the anti-TRA bandwagon, centering himself in what is and should a women-led movement (i.e. feminism).
The last straw for me is seeing fellow feminists fawn over this tweet - he posits himself as an ally, yet shows 0 interest in opening up the world of comedy beyond the thoughts of white men.

A heterosexual man being critical of transgenderism =! feminism

I think it’s all right. Even women won’t agree what feminism constitutes. He should care as much for women’s rights as you care for men’s rights.

It’s like Peterson or Shapiro who are also gender critical but don’t believe in gender pay gaps.

AnotherLass · 29/03/2019 13:42

I'm happy to fawn over Graham

Literally no other person of his level of celebrity is doing what he is doing. That doesn't mean that I agree with the guy on everything (I don't). He's still a total hero.

And it is ludicrous to say that he is doing this for attention - he's taken a huge amount of shit for what he's doing, and literally nobody speaks out on this issue for popularity

Plinytheprettier · 29/03/2019 13:44

CaptainKirksSpookyghost because I have functionig eyes and am capable of distinguishing the sex of a fellow human being Hmm.

Zippey those two are not gender critical not even close! They are conservatives who are patriarchy 101. My enemy's enemy is not my friend, and right wing men are no better than woke bros

OP You may want to do a bit of research rather than rushing in and making yourself look rather silly.

His last project was Motherhood, a successful series on BBC2, written alongside 3 women.

tellmewhenthespaceshiplandscoz · 29/03/2019 13:45

Exactly what Nappydisco said

Whatisthisfuckery · 29/03/2019 13:46

Oh Jees, is this one of those shit stirring purity politics threads again?

Makes W sign on forehead

CaptainKirksSpookyghost · 29/03/2019 13:47

No you can't you can NEVER tell.

My enemy's enemy is not my friend,

What a very black and white view. people have opinions, some are agreed with and some are not. There's no "friends" or "enemies", it's not a war situation.

notatwork · 29/03/2019 13:48

He's giving the issues an airing such that it can be seen by those who may not follow the social media of feminist philosophers.
And he called out someone responsible for a lot of the social media 'silencing' which is in and of itself a good thing.
I don't think he's a feminist as such, but an ally to women at the moment.

CaptainKirksSpookyghost · 29/03/2019 13:48

conservatives who are patriarchy 101

Who are 'they'?

The conservatives have had two female leaders....

CaptainKirksSpookyghost · 29/03/2019 13:49

Isolate yourself all you want, but the suprise that others don't is pretty silly.

FeministCat · 29/03/2019 13:49

Well perhaps say that - instead of accusing him of not working with black people and saying that women supporting him are fawning and pathetic!!

It’s so woke to blame women for the patriarchy and their own discrimination, though!

Seriously OP though, this poster is right. If your complaint is Glinner gets more attention than woman saying the same thing maybe think about why that is? It’s not the women here not giving other women attention for saying the same things, something you would know if instead of parachuting in to attack women you spent some time reading around.

JessicaWakefieldSVH · 29/03/2019 13:50

Don’t come to a feminist board and tell women who we must or must not support and why, and to refer to support for him after he was targeted by SH as ‘fawning’ is just more sexist BS. He isn’t our leader, this isn’t a political party. We’ll support who we want, when we want.

Plinytheprettier · 29/03/2019 13:50

CaptainKirksSpookyghost I mean i feel like you're being sarcastic, but if you're being serious most people can tell 99.9% of the time what sex someone is (even if they've taken cross-sex hormones, had surgery etc)

I mean it's as 'black and white' as this to me. All men are complicit in patriarchy unless they try and break it down. I see Glinner get a lot of attention for criticising TRAs (which is good) but I think that tweet made me see red as it seemed very same old same old. Perhaps I did jump the gun in my post, but I will reiterate that I will not ally with the like of Peterson and Shapiro under any circumstances. They are just as much of a threat to women's sex based rights as TRAs

Yes.

CaptainKirksSpookyghost · 29/03/2019 13:52

I will not ally with the like of Peterson and Shapiro under any circumstances.

YOU don't have to, we are not people being lead by a leader, we are individuals with our own path, and our own opinions.
Why are you tewlling people what is and isn't acceptable?

GirlDownUnder · 29/03/2019 13:53

SharkBastard ....”made of stern stuff!”

Good for you Brew Gin Glitterball

Please remember though, whilst we are all strangers we also all support you. Don’t be ‘stern stuff’ all on your own k.

Glinner, you absolutely rock... mwah x

Bluestitch · 29/03/2019 13:53

He hired white men to play Irish priests as well, you know. Shocking isn't he.

AdultHuman · 29/03/2019 13:53

You know what OP, you are entitled to your opinion and choices and you are entitled to start a discussion on this.

Can you please explain why you started by mentioning Glinner in particular?

JessicaWakefieldSVH · 29/03/2019 13:54

I will not ally with the like of Peterson and Shapiro under any circumstances.

Nobody is asking you to. Agreeing on one thing, does not mean we’re ‘allying’ with anyone. This sort of unintelligent tribalism is really tiresome.

Plinytheprettier · 29/03/2019 13:54

But the feminist movement is a collective, not about individuals. I think as a collective moment I support ending patriarchy in all forms, not using one arm to stop the other.

OP posts:
CaptainKirksSpookyghost · 29/03/2019 13:55

But the feminist movement is a collective
Grin

Yes "the" feminist movement.

Plinytheprettier · 29/03/2019 13:56

AdultHuman thank you. Honestly I saw that tweet and saw a couple feminists I respect praising it. It made me frustrated because I now how often women are excluded in comedy, and to see an all male team like that by someone who seems to cast himself in the role of 'ally' was rather jarring. I think I did the jump the gun a bit.
My point about social conservatives and patriarchy in general still stands though

OP posts:
CaptainKirksSpookyghost · 29/03/2019 13:56

Maybe you should look up feminist before all else?

JessicaWakefieldSVH · 29/03/2019 13:56

I’m a women’s rights campaigner, I’m not part of a feminist tribe thank you very much. We don’t all think the same, we do not have a leader or a bible to follow.

The fact you took a photo of him working with other white men as some sort of proof he’s not the right kind of ally, is really embarrassing.

CaptainKirksSpookyghost · 29/03/2019 13:57

social conservatives and patriarchy in general still stands though

So nothing about Glinner really then?
