Women don't have to justify why they declined a particular male HCP for their smear test. Doesn't matter whether the male in question is a transwoman - like Rachel - or not.

HCPs centre the medical need of the patient, not themselves. My lovely, very professional male gynaecologist doesn't tell women to 'shut the fuck up' if they request his female colleague. Because he's not rapey and because that would be really quite weird and aggressive.

I honestly don't understand why a trans hcp would ever be doing smear tests. Most GP surgeries (and presumably gum clinics etc) have multiple employees. One nurse might specialise in doing the asthma clinics or the diabetes. Someone else might do a phlebotomy list. Obviously there's lots of general stuff too. I would expect that one or two nurses would do a regular Pap smear session. Surely they would make sure it was a female nurse who had that particular responsibility and find other areas for the trans hcp to specialise in. Most male nurses would run a mile from the smear list just as I have succeeded in never learning male catheterisation.
If they were particularly keen to do the smear list that would be a red flag to me. Unless, I suppose, the whole practice was so woke they were oblivious to the evidence of their eyes and TWAW etc.

Well, exactly: what kind of TW volunteers to do smear tests and do you want that sort of person anywhere near you when you're in a state of vulnerability? Either they are just insensitive or they are something worse...

The problem is women need to know the correct words to use. If we request a women, what does that mean? Male transpeople with a GRC can use the word female, even those without a GRC, claim to have female on their passport.

With the words women and female apparently meaning different things to different people, I don't know how anyone is supposed to request a suitable hcp with confidence.

No that's a fair comment which reflects the trauma some women have due to sexual abuse or assault.

If the feelings of the HCP are more important than the patient they are in the wrong job and can do harm to a patient. Harm can be psychological as well as physical.

Failure to understand and recognise this isnt just insensitive.

Trust is at the heart of good healthcare.

If someone feels they can not trust a HCP for any reason, that's legitimate. Particularly for intimate examinations.

Breeching that can lead to the complete breakdown of the doctor patient relation. This is not a minor thing.

I came on to see if there was a thread on McKinnon's graphs which I've just seen on Twitter. I see there have been a few mentions here. I've looked at them all and I can only see data that says men have more testosterone, are taller and heavier. So what if there is an overlap? It still shows a massive difference between men and women or am I missing something?

Yes, RedToothbrush, quite agree! It's the mechanistic approach to things like smears (a lot of things, actually) that run up red flags make me uneasy, as if these people were approaching being female as a sort of algebraic substitution. Find + replace.

So smear test uptake is at an all time low and yet this idiot thinks it’s ok to discourage women from attending if they are not happy for a biological male to perform the test. You couldn’t make this up.
