"More young people than ever are exploring their gender identity. Last year, two and a half thousand under-eighteens were referred to NHS England's gender identity clinics for support. Some are hoping to get access to potentially irreversible treatments as soon as they can. Doctors are divided about the best way to help."

"Dr Faye Kirkland investigates how much we understand about the care being offered to transgender children."

Did we know Helen Webberley would be on this?

Would the bbc consult a GP with a criminal conviction for running an illegal private practice on any other subject?

If they were talking about heart surgery, would they consult that heart surgeon that was struck off? Confused

Cwenthryth · 25/02/2019 20:35

Here we go

So far - teens saying they’re transgender because they wanted to be an angel in the school play/wear certain clothes.

That was Helen Webberly - she who has been convicted of running an illegal clinic. Sincerely hope they mention that!

RedRosa90 · 25/02/2019 20:36

This is actually quite traumatic to watch. They are medicalising children like how I was and am. Children who see sex stereotypes for the bullshit they are and think they are wrong rather than that society is wrong.

EweSurname · 25/02/2019 20:36

I’m not sure if it was her - it was too short a glimpse for me to be able to tell!

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 25/02/2019 20:37

Christ my sister was a whale in the school play. What the hell does that make her?

misscockerspaniel · 25/02/2019 20:37

I thought it looked like HW but she isn't claiming to be in it on her twitter a/c.

RedRosa90 · 25/02/2019 20:38

Lordprof, LOL.

ToeToToe · 25/02/2019 20:38

"Early stages of puberty" - so my 11yr old DD's age then. She's starting puberty now.

My 11yr old daughter is not old or mature enough to understand the long-term consequences of being guided onto such a medical pathway.

Polly C does not know for sure that they are fully reversible.

Cwenthryth · 25/02/2019 20:39

Jade is breaking my heart already. Someone get the kid a time machine to when they could run around as flamboyant as they like, with as extreme makeup as they like, and do it as a boy/man and not be led to believe it means there’s anything wrong with them.

Serious criticism of puberty blockers coming up now.

EweSurname · 25/02/2019 20:39

This seems like it might actually be a balanced, evidence-focussed programme

HumberElla · 25/02/2019 20:40

Jade seems very creative, alternative and expressive. Wanted to be an angel and told no. This teen was a child who, like many of us, wanted to be free to have fun and express themselves in their own way.
Now this is being medicalised?!

ToeToToe · 25/02/2019 20:40

RIght, Cwenthryth.

It's like Boy George, Marilyn etc never even happened. Sad

misscockerspaniel · 25/02/2019 20:41

What have we been saying about live experimentation?!

Muststopfaffing · 25/02/2019 20:41

Difficult to hear the teenagers with dysphoria and feel their distress but so far looking at evidence for puberty blockers and risks. Polly Carmichael making what seems to be a technical differentiation on what “reversible” means.

EweSurname · 25/02/2019 20:42

“There’s a reason why people have begun to think about such [drastic treatment]”. How do they square this with an affirmative pathway, if it’s such a unknown, risky treatment?

SomeDyke · 25/02/2019 20:42

"Christ my sister was a whale in the school play. What the hell does that make her?"
trans species, but still a mammal.........
What if your role in the school play was an inanimate object? Any trans rocks? (take care as regards word order and meaning.......).

They are medicalising children like how I was and am. Yep, SO many of us glad we were then not now.

Mrskeats · 25/02/2019 20:43

Marilyn is very much on our side: he’s quite vocal on Twitter.

Muststopfaffing · 25/02/2019 20:44

😡 at “runs like a boy” now on to Helen Webberley

CaptainKirksSpookyghost · 25/02/2019 20:44

They are medicalising children like how I was and am.
Yes, we knew this but isn't it heartbreaking to see.

pombear · 25/02/2019 20:45

Well this is different. (Waves to Faye) (Doesn't wave to Helen W)

EweSurname · 25/02/2019 20:45

Helen Webberly! What was she saying on her twitter feed because she’s clearly agreed to be interviewed for this

GrimSisters · 25/02/2019 20:45

Very sympathetic towards Webberley so far. Hmm

BernardBlacksWineIcelolly · 25/02/2019 20:46

all the patients that webberly has treated say she's right?

how long has she been in business (literally)?

RedRosa90 · 25/02/2019 20:47

Omg somebody save Jade!!

HumberElla · 25/02/2019 20:47

Born female. Was told at 12 ran like a boy and walked like a boy? Didn’t identify with feminine things?
And lo and behold Helen W obliged with providing hormones.
Helen says that’s ok because the patient (child) says they are ok with it. All good.
