I'm so pleased to see this. I've been a big fan of Martina since I was a kid and this just makes her go up even higher in my estimation:

Quelle surprise

Martina speaks out!
FloralBuntingIsObnoxious · 17/02/2019 07:06

Oh, the sweet, sweet payoff of McKinnon losing their shit. Go on, sweetie, dangle your unmentionables in front of everyone's face by making this your moment in history. Funny stuff.

DisrespectfulAdultFemale · 17/02/2019 07:06

Good for Martina.

And fuck off, McKinnon you narcissistic cheat.

feministfairy · 17/02/2019 07:08

And David Walsh, their Chief Sports Writer with an excellent (and sensitive) piece about Caster Semenya:

RollerJed
Good article Martina! But agree with one of the comments on the article that if Semenya does have external testes then that is XY and needs to compete as.

I take it you mean internal testes. If she was believed to be female at birth and brought up as female, that would be because any testes she has are internal. We are assuming the cause of the hyperandrogenism is genetic maleness, but if Semenya is genetically female, would that change your opinion of whether she should be able to compete with other females?

zanahoria · 17/02/2019 07:22

Joyful news, the cause could not have a better champion. I believe this piece is a game chamber as she will embolden others to speak out. Martina is not only the greatest female athlete of all time but has an impeccable record of fighting for human rights. She also has a great way with words, I love the way she explains how she went away, learned, considered the options. It is such a dignified response and so typical of a truly wonderful woman.

She has hit the best return of her career, Mckinnon is tasting the dust.

CountFosco · 17/02/2019 07:23

Martina Navratilovais a sporting legend. I'm so glad someone with such influence has spoken out on this so clearly. Thankyou Martina.

charlestonchaplin · 17/02/2019 07:28

And while I agree transsexuals have committed to their new gender, they still retain many of the advantages she talks about.

Kunkka · 17/02/2019 07:36

As a sports fan I am totally baffled how anyone who loves sports and competion believes letting men and women compete against each other is ever a good idea. (Except sports like chess, etc)

boatyardblues · 17/02/2019 07:36

There’s a recent comment under the Gilligan piece by Irreverence scoffing “well, why don’t we just let TW box with women” that’s crying out for a reply about Fallon Fox and Tammika Brents if anyone is able to oblige....

birdsdestiny · 17/02/2019 07:37

We need to show her some support as it's likely she will get some unpleasantness on twitter to say the least.

boatyardblues · 17/02/2019 07:41

I see a poster called JobMarch has already done the honours. Jo - If you are on here, great post!

boatyardblues · 17/02/2019 07:41

Sigh. Jo March, not Job...

ChattyLion · 17/02/2019 07:42

Excellent brave truth-telling by Martina Navratilova. She’s said nothing transphobic she’s been thoughtful and kind in this article and is informed.
She’s rightly drawn boundaries to protect all of women’s sport over the validation and unfair advantage some are insisting on. So she’s calling out unfairness and drawing attention to this clash of rights. No phobia involved there. It’s very brave and good of her to speak out - thank you to her Flowers.

‘Ever the peacemaker, I promised to keep quiet on the subject until I had properly researched it.

Well, I’ve now done that and, if anything, my views have strengthened. To put the argument at its most basic: a man can decide to be female, take hormones if required by whatever sporting organisation is concerned, win everything in sight and perhaps earn a small fortune, and then reverse his decision and go back to making babies if he so desires. It’s insane and it’s cheating. I am happy to address a transgender woman in whatever form she prefers, but I would not be happy to compete against her. It would not be fair.

Simply reducing hormone levels — the prescription most sports have adopted — does not solve the problem. A man builds up muscle and bone density, as well as a greater number of oxygen-carrying red blood cells, from childhood. Training increases the discrepancy. Indeed, if a male were to change gender in such a way as to eliminate any accumulated advantage, he would have to begin hormone treatment before puberty. For me, that is unthinkable.’

Anlaf · 17/02/2019 07:45

Oh she is brilliant

JudgeRulesNutterButter · 17/02/2019 07:46

Well done Martina!

GC feminists could not have a better champion. Fair and thoughtful piece.

MiddleoftheRoad · 17/02/2019 07:54

Good on you Martina.
Predictible reply from McKinnon.

boatyardblues · 17/02/2019 07:55

If the TRAs go after Martina on Twitter because of this article, it will have the same effect as the mum in cells/unmentionable lawyer case earlier this week. Martina is an athlete with global recognition and reach - she is entirely the wrong person to pick a fight with.

EweSurname · 17/02/2019 07:58

Navratilova makes a “critical distinction” between athletes such as McKinnon, who retains her male anatomy

The more people that see ”her male anatomy”, (the phrase rather than literally!) the better

MiddleoftheRoad · 17/02/2019 08:00

And so it begins. Please report this American 'blogger' if you're on Twitter. Calling for the 'execution' of Martina.

Martina speaks out!
boatyardblues · 17/02/2019 08:02

Calling for the 'execution' of Martina.

Is that the sound of Barbara Streisand I can hear singing in the background? 🙄

SparkiePolastri · 17/02/2019 08:06

This is fantastic. I had never heard of McKinnon until her run-in with Martina, and then I thought nothing further was going to come of it.

I can't believe someone so influential and credible is coming out so strongly with the blatantly obvious truth.

DisrespectfulAdultFemale · 17/02/2019 08:08

Execution? How sad to feel that way.

Qcng · 17/02/2019 08:10

I love how RM is Tweeting about the article! Helping the peak-trans effect ride over Twitter....
