Women's March London says trans voices should be elevated over women's voices

Women's march london is a fully intersectional and trans inclusive collective, as laid out in our guiding principles. We fully recognise trans women as women and sisters and welcome them to all our actions. We acknowledge that all who were assigned female at birth, including our trans brothers and some non-binary siblings share many of the same struggles and believe that the voices of trans men and AFAB non-binary people should always be heard and elevated in discussions of reproductive justice or menstrual equity.
We will not tolerate anyone who comes to our actions or our spaces with the intent to cause harm to others and believe that transphobia has no place in feminist action. Bread and Roses is an all genders action and one where we hope people of all genders and none can feel safe and welcome. If any trans sibling feels threatened or unsafe on the march we urge them to come speak to our stewards or one of the organisers and we will do our best to help.

Observer: 'Hundreds join London Women's March to protest austerity'
(extract)
"Propelled by a mass public rendition of Sisters Are Doin’ It for Themselves and accompanied by a thudding police helicopter overhead, hundreds of protesters rallied in central London on Saturday in solidarity with an estimated 89 Women’s Marches worldwide.

“Today is about improving the living and working conditions of women”, said organiser Shola Mos-Shogbamimu, a lawyer and activist. “On the ground and in the data, it is proven that austerity is disproportionately affecting women, especially vulnerable women. Brexit has stolen from us.”

Themed as the bread and roses march, in homage to the 1912 strike that revolutionised working women’s rights, the London chapter closed down the length of Regent Street, roared through Piccadilly Circus and on to Trafalgar Square to hear a coalition of speakers from the Fawcett Society, Solace Women’s Aid and the Women’s Equality Party." From the Evening Standard article linked above:

"The leader of Women’s Equality UK Sophie Walker addressed the crowds.

“Patriarchy doesn’t just take women for granted, it relies on our oppression to ensure others thrive,” she said."

the others being.... males?

merrymouse · 19/01/2019 19:32

According to the Conservatives austerity has ended, so that’s that then.

adultFemaleElf · 19/01/2019 20:20

That march sounds like a load of old bollox. Quite literally.

2rebecca · 19/01/2019 20:38

I'm confused. I thought the march was today but the Guardian says it was yesterday. I still don't get what roses have to do with anything. They aren't an essential and just make it sound as though women are sulking because they haven't received enough bouquets.

borntobequiet · 19/01/2019 20:39

Oh yes, another thing that put me off was the WEP.

R0wantrees · 19/01/2019 20:43

I think it may be an article written for tomorrow's Observer.

I’m very struck by how much of what passes for left these days wants a politics without actual politics. They just want to be right. And to be seen to be right, and in their rightness, convert others to rightness. It’s all a moral crusade, not a politics. There’s no actual engagement with power.

So true.

Ereshkigal · 19/01/2019 20:49

Further, each year, thousands of women and girls, particularly women of colour, migrants and transgender women and girls, are kidnapped, trafficked, or murdered.

MTF trans make up a minuscule proportion of that.

Angryresister · 19/01/2019 21:40

Heard an interview on a recent Womans Hour talking about the Women's marches internationally. They're was talk about anti semitism but the discussion with whoever the London rep was, was a bit strange...sounded like eggshells were being trodden on, and elephants avoided in order to not talk about who we mean by women.

Yes don't you dare focus on women as the Pink Woke will object and rewrite the script so as to be inclusive/s

merrymouse · 19/01/2019 21:51

fullfact.org/economy/austerity-women/

Women are more adversely affected by austerity because they are more likely to claim benefits related to caring responsibilities. Nobody is going to solve that problem with sparkles and slogans.

womanformallyknownaswoman · 19/01/2019 21:59

Thx Mouse - The House of Commons Library estimates that, looking at all changes to taxes and benefits from 2010-2017, 86% of the reduction in government spending is in spending on women. This is based on which person in a household receives a benefit or is taxed, so doesn’t factor in the “indirect” impact on partners and household budgets.

No wonder the political, media and business class want to do away with women - we don't have enough money to spend to be of any interest to them/s

terfing · 19/01/2019 22:02

How did Munroe's speech go? Anyone know where I can find it?

womanformallyknownaswoman · 19/01/2019 22:08

Extract from the report from FullFact re impact of austerity on women:

The EHRC also shows that the relative impact on men and women varies according to income level. By dividing the country into ten income “deciles” (with 1 being the lowest 10% of earners, and 10 being the highest-earning 10%), the smallest difference in impact is among the lowest 10% of earners (an average loss of just over £800 per year for men and around £1,000 for women).

The biggest gap is in decile 7 (a loss of around £220 for men, and around £740 for women). Men toward the top end in deciles 8 and 9 are typically no worse off, and men in decile 10 have gained an average of just under £200 a year. Women in deciles 8 and 9 are an average of £400 worse off, and typically £500 worse off in decile 10.

The report argues that “the result that women experience larger losses than men is mainly driven by the fact that women receive a much larger proportion of benefits and tax credits than men” and that since 2010 “the largest negative impact on incomes is as a result of cuts to benefits”....

The report also picks out a number of other groups, beyond women, who are particularly affected by tax and benefit changes. Ethnic minority households, households containing someone with a disability, lone-parent families, and families with three or more children are all picked out as “significantly adversely impacted”.

It’s just a lefty march about every ism under the sun and new ones you’re not yet aware of. Don’t think it has anything to do with women’s rights at all and was started as political thing against Trump before he even took office.

As people have said there is very nasty elements regarding the founders but most people won’t be aware so not saying they agree with them. It’s just a good day out protesting about what? Doesn’t matter for the majority - it’s cool man. Great pictures for Facebook

R0wantrees · 19/01/2019 23:21

Munroe Bergdorf
'I want you all to all hands. I want us all to promise that we'll be there for each other. Not just the women that you know but the women that you dont. Not only the women that you know but complete strangers"

I want you to repeat after me, 'I stand by you my sister'

It's more intersectional than spaghetti junction.
We need to focus on one thing at a time, intersectionality is just complicating and complicating so the momentum (small m) is lost.
If we were only to follow those with identical politics to ourselves we wouldn't follow anyone, and wouldn't go anywhere.

ALittleBitofVitriol · 20/01/2019 00:17

Hang on..??

"free and able to care for and nurture their families, however they are formed, in safe and healthy environments free from structural impediments."

Again, because I'm not sure I believe what I'm reading... Wtf?

free and able to care for and nurture their families

That's what women are for? That's what the women's march is about?

So progressive, much woke.

BigotedWoman · 20/01/2019 00:29

Monroe always look so bloody smug.

When I saw ‘roses’ capitalised, I briefly thought it referred to Roses chocolates.

WTFIsAGleepglorp · 20/01/2019 01:00

Hearts starve as well as bodies, give us bread and roses too.

I'm guessing the Woko Haram are stylin' the Pride movie.

Check the lyrics.

We're so nurturing. So warm and womanly......

James Oppenheimer wrote the music.

As we go marching, marching, in the beauty of the day
A million darkened kitchens, a thousand mill lofts gray
Are touched with all the radiance that a sudden sun discloses
For the people hear us singing, bread and roses, bread and roses.

As we come marching, marching, we battle too, for men,
For they are in the struggle and together we shall win.
Our days shall not be sweated from birth until life closes,
Hearts starve as well as bodies, give us bread, but give us roses.

As we come marching, marching, un-numbered women dead
Go crying through our singing their ancient call for bread,
Small art and love and beauty their trudging spirits knew
Yes, it is bread we. fight for, but we fight for roses, too.

As we go marching, marching, we're standing proud and tall.
The rising of the women means the rising of us all.
No more the drudge and idler, ten that toil where one reposes,
But a sharing of life's glories, bread and roses, bread and roses.

Freespeecher · 20/01/2019 01:31

WTFIsaGleepglorp

You do realise I'm going to have to nick 'Woko Haram' and claim it as my own?

AspieAndProud · 20/01/2019 01:42

I’d be fascinated to know what proportion of transwomen are caters. They seem pretty much focused on themselves.
