www.newshub.co.nz/home/world/2018/11/social-media-divided-on-twitter-s-ban-of-misgendering-and-deadnaming.html

What a great way to protect sex offenders who want to hide their past, and to get rid of feminists.

Right after Wordpress suddenly added that to their rules as well:

As have already been brought up on this board, Meghan E Murphy (of feministcurrent.com) has been permanently suspended from twitter. Reason: She tweeted that men aren't women.

I think twitter might have overstepped the mark here, they are clearly forcing people to lie. To state fiction over fact. Ian Huntley committed his crimes as a man and that is in no way hate speech. This bollocks of dead naming is absurd.

Prestonsflowers · 24/11/2018 17:55

I’ve been agreeing with glinner and have tweeted that several notable people are definitely not women.
I haven’t been banned yet. So I’ll just carry on

AspieAndProud · 24/11/2018 17:57

If we can’t deadnane there should be some kind of verification like the blue tick for celebrities so we can declare our biological sex.

Serfisafleur · 24/11/2018 18:10

I keep holding onto the hope that Twitter will eventually go the way of MySpace and other SM sites. They all fade in the end. Twitter is really struggling to monetize it's business model and it's share price is on another decline.

Can't fight them. Just ditch them.

DragonFire99 · 24/11/2018 18:13

That’s bonkers. They’re trying to tell us what to think?? It’s a fact that e.g. Caitlin Jenner was born Bruce. It’s not a lie. Not being allowed to say that is like rewriting history.

TheChampagneGalop · 24/11/2018 18:26

like rewriting history
It is, and Twitter shouldn't aid people in rewriting their past.

Glinner not playing: twitter.com/Glinner/status/1066351319693357065

Serfisafleur · 24/11/2018 18:32

Glinner will be banned.

Serfisafleur · 24/11/2018 18:34

There needs to be a "Spartacus" movement on Twitter where thousands of people Tweet "Humans can't change sex" etc.

Spartacus caught the attention of MNHQ and helped shape their policy.

FloralBunting · 24/11/2018 18:42

He will, yes. And all the dafties will crow long and illiterate.

It seems likely the flotsam and jetsom will end up coming here, so be aware - the censorship on other parts of the 'net will increase the pressure on MNHQ. I think more crunch moments for FWR are on their way, and it will be interesting to see if MNHQ have the salt to hold the line.

VickyEadie · 24/11/2018 19:10

There are actually people on that Twitter thread arguing that Brooks at al are WOMEN. It's a fucking nightmare.

arranfan · 24/11/2018 19:12

Twitter and Wordpress are implementing censorship that is indistinguishable from totalitarianism and is profoundly disturbing in many ways.

I'm waiting for the following organisations to make a stand:

Index on Censorship - www.indexoncensorship.org

Pen International - pen-international.org

Full Fact - fullfact.org

BBC Reality Check - www.bbc.co.uk/news/topics/cp7r8vgl2rgt/reality-check

C4 FactCheck - www.channel4.com/news/factcheck

I'm including the fact checking organisations because I don't understand how much longer they'll be free to state facts and statistics if individual tweeters are being banned for quoting UK law or official statistics.

pombear · 24/11/2018 19:17

Vicky

We could call it a nightmare (which it is) but we can also reframe it as an opportunity.

How great it is to have yet more evidence to show to most of the general public, who haven't been aware of this as of yet, that the cult-like slavish 'they're a woman if they say they're a woman' argument marches on.

Many of us have been where many others may be right now. Be nice, don't want to be seen as 'phobic' (now a meaningless cover-all), think most trans discussion is about people who have dysphoria.

Moments like these are opportunities to have the conversation widely again.

Mostly people are 'boiling frogs' thinking everything's sort of OK, not affecting them, not really a problem.

Actions like this ban is pouring a pan of hot water directly on frogs who were only midly simmering before!

Johnnyfinland · 24/11/2018 19:22

I disagree with a lot of gender critical rhetoric but this is worrying. There are times when it is absolutely in the public interest to say what sex people were born as, in the case of crimes as you’ve pointed out. I’m wondering now how this will impact online news outlets outlets hosted on Wordpress (as many mainstream national news sites are)

AspieAndProud · 24/11/2018 19:22

Wordpress banned Jerry Coyne’s Why Evolution is True blog in Pakistan because he reprints the Jesus and Mo cartoons.

Transgenderism is the West’s new religion and criticism is blasphemy.

BlackeyedGruesome · 24/11/2018 20:20

The more people they ban the less money they will make from advertising.

AspieAndProud · 24/11/2018 21:56

I’ve noticed over the last couple of years that even hardcore libertarians have started arguing that Twitter and Facebook are virtual monopolies and need to be broken up.

Markets only work when there is competition.

They need to be regulated as public services, because that is what they now are — they stepped into the agora and took it over. But the agora has to be a free marketplace of ideas or it’s not an agora, it’s only a pulpit.

Totally agree.

uglyandlovingit · 25/11/2018 00:00

Am I allowed to say that Tommy Robinson's real name is Stephen Yaxley-Lennon?

Ereshkigal · 25/11/2018 00:05

Yes, because he's not trans. If he changed it to Tamara, no.

arranfan · 25/11/2018 00:07

Unclear - read point 9 here.

But, he probably does have the right to apply for the Right to be forgotten under GDPR.

AspieAndProud · 25/11/2018 00:11

Even converts to Islam never insisted that all reference to their former names be erased.

Wikipedia hasn’t deleted references to Cassius Clay from Muhammad Ali’s biography and you can still buy albums by Cat Stevens.

Francis Crook executive director of the Howard League for Penal Reform "said that she was worried that ‘some men with a history of extreme violence and sexual violence against women have found a new way of exercising aggression towards women’.

‘These men are not transitioning because they like women and want to be a woman, but in order to exert a new kind of control and dominance over women, a sort of infiltration."

Claude Knights (safeguarding expert, retired after 15 years as head of Kidscape, ivolved with anti-bullying charity and Westminster Safeguarding group)
on sex offenders who transition and are afforded the opportunity to change their name and hide their history as a consequence & recent case of "Christopher Noble, 32, transitioned to Christyl Knight while behind bars for keeping a stash of over 4,000 vile pictures and videos of kids as young as six months old"

“Allowing these individuals to hide a secret past is a dangerous practice.”
“Anyone who’s fuelled the vile trade in indecent images of children and therefore contributed to their sexual abuse should not be allowed to change their name.”
