Stella O'Malley, Trans Kids: It's Time To Talk

Apologies if there is already a thread about this. Channel 4, 10.00 tonight. 'Stella O'Malley considers the huge rise in numbers of young people embarking on gender transition, through the prism of the gender identity issues she experienced when she was a child.' According to The Times no TRA groups were prepared to contribute to this . Stella feels this may be because she was a tomboy as a young girl, (even insisting she was a boy until she hit puberty), and is now a confident, mature woman who believes that nowadays she would be pressured to go down the transition route. Sounds like it will be worth watching.

The young woman on now is interesting to hear.

BernardBlacksWineIcelolly · 21/11/2018 22:58

so interesting that she's focussing on transboys and transmen

really unusual

drum123 · 21/11/2018 22:59

'I think they're lost, and they're being led.'

Brava Stella. Compassionate, kind and honest

Bittermints · 21/11/2018 22:59

That was very well done.

deepwatersolo · 21/11/2018 23:00

I wonder if some of the pro TRA women MPs are watching this. Is Leyla Moran seeing the soul of the protesters? Or does that only work in changing rooms.

BernardBlacksWineIcelolly · 21/11/2018 23:00

it was really refreshing to see that focus on the female experience of transition

even here when we talk about trans we're often really focused on transwomen because that's where the primary threat to women's rights is

but who is looking out for those confused girls?

pombear · 21/11/2018 23:00

Stella If you happen to be here. I'm not a fan of flowers normally but it's mumsnet's way of waving and showing love so, for your documentary, your bravery in speaking out, but also your last comment Flowers

BouncingOn · 21/11/2018 23:01

That was powerful. I'm kind of stunned.

drum123 · 21/11/2018 23:01

So glad this programme was made, and aired. She presented it with passion and love. Channel 4 need to be commended for this.

Drum123 - this for me too 😢. The programme and the movement

I think they're lost, and they're being led.'

TheLurkingOne · 21/11/2018 23:02

Damn you all I've been looking for you on my other thread about this! Here you are!

Good wasn't she?

TBDO · 21/11/2018 23:02

The ending was so powerful. These poor lost children being led down a path from which they can’t return, and if they do return, it’s to a different version of themselves with added (potential) medical issues.

The girl who has transitioned back to being a girl - I wonder if she said she didn’t regret it as she has had to accept her reality and not be consumed by regret for following the path that she did? It would be hard to live life if you were constantly thinking ‘what if I hadn’t somebody that’

WaveThoseHands · 21/11/2018 23:03

😢 Yes to being made with love, amazing TV.

MsJeminaPuddleduck · 21/11/2018 23:03

Stella - from me too - thank you. Your compassion and understanding of these kids shone through this.

kayaking · 21/11/2018 23:05

She said she didn't regret it, but the expression on her face said she did.

CoolCarrie · 21/11/2018 23:06

Well done and thank you to all who took part.

MsJeminaPuddleduck · 21/11/2018 23:06

Our culture is really f*cked up isn't it? That kids are crying out for help and this is what they get. Not understanding, not support but processed through a sausage machine of drugs, surgery and unobtainable dreams

Milander · 21/11/2018 23:07

Don’t go to the channel 4 /support page for help though

JudasPrudy · 21/11/2018 23:08

Excellent programme. I'm amazed C4 had the balls to air this - I thought #bornrisky only went as far as pro LGBTQ+ programming. Loved that they aired the behaviour of protesters at a feminist debate. Very brave of Stella. Lots of anger about this on Twitter.

KatVonGulag · 21/11/2018 23:09

That was powerful tv.

Really powerful.

pombear · 21/11/2018 23:10

I think they're lost, and they're being led

The reason why many of us are here, and elsewhere. offline.

To support the 'lost' and the 'led'.

No 'phobia'. No aggression.

Just because we see and recognise, sometimes in our own experiences in our journey to adulthood, the 'lost' and the 'led,' and the attack on women and children's rights from those from a different quarter.

CathyDyson · 21/11/2018 23:11

Does Debbie still live with her family? I thought I read somewhere that she didn't

scotsheather · 21/11/2018 23:11

Didn't see all of it but I'm glad they showed the Bristol thugs for the silencing tactics the TRAs are using. Interesting it seemed to be all young transmen except Debbie. The boys and women seem to be left out the arguments at present.

Anoisagusaris · 21/11/2018 23:14

Great programme.

I love Stella. She is regularly on Irish radio speaking about parenting issues. Is this her first appearance on UK tv?
