Stella O'Malley, Trans Kids: It's Time To Talk

Apologies if there is already a thread about this. Channel 4, 10.00 tonight. 'Stella O'Malley considers the huge rise in numbers of young people embarking on gender transition, through the prism of the gender identity issues she experienced when she was a child.' According to The Times no TRA groups were prepared to contribute to this . Stella feels this may be because she was a tomboy as a young girl, (even insisting she was a boy until she hit puberty), and is now a confident, mature woman who believes that nowadays she would be pressured to go down the transition route. Sounds like it will be worth watching.

Looking at her expression, Debbie's wife didn't seem very happy at all. She has stayed with her spouse purely for the sake of the children I think.

Maybe someone can explain, but I don't understand why so many of these late transitioning MTF transpeople have female partners that they have fathered children with? Surely if they had always felt themselves to be essentially female, they wouldn't have been able to bear having sex as a man?

Coughed · 22/11/2018 01:12

They are religious, Christian.

charlestonchaplin · 22/11/2018 01:33

I think she (Debbie Hayton's wife) was honest about the upheaval and difficulty her husband's transition caused. Taking things a few hours at a time, different beds. Clearly she has accepted the situation, at least for now. I don't think she declared she was 'happy'. Did I miss that bit?

She doesn't have to bare her soul to the TV cameras or to anyone else. I think she's an intelligent woman who has decided to remain in her marriage, all things considered. We don't all have to choose the same path.

Pemba · 22/11/2018 01:41

No she never declared she was happy, at all. I noticed her poker face when Stella was saying 'Well done' on supporting Debbie. Her expression and some of the things she said seemed to indicate that she was resentful, as indeed she has every right to be.

WichBitchHarpyTerfThatsMe · 22/11/2018 01:52

Pemba I think that late transitioning men usually have a solid framework of support, 20 years of marriage or so with a woman. They've built relationships with women who they know aren't likely to just drop them. The men are their children's fathers. The trans widows won't simply jump ship because they have children together and will put up with a lot of shit simply to keep their children in a familiar home and school environment.

I'd be very interested to know how many single, middle aged men transition. Those without the established support and safety of a long term relationship with a woman.

DeRigueurMortis · 22/11/2018 01:53

Just watched on catch up.

The biggest "moment" to me was when Kyle said she didn't regret her transition/detransition but the moment after she looked devastated.

It was almost as if it was the first time she'd been asked (perhaps it was) and she had this stock answer but then actually started to think about the question.

My heart went out to her.

I'm glad they covered what happened in Bristol properly - especially compared to the Munrore documentary version - and I don't think anyone can be in doubt about the aggressive tactics of TRA's.

Overall I think it was a good documentary but I'd liked to have seen more information on the lack of medical research and known side effects to date on blockers and cross sex hormones.

Pemba · 22/11/2018 01:58

Yes I see. But what about the sex thing I wonder?

Milliepede · 22/11/2018 03:56

Kyle's expression, when she said that she had no regrets, betrayed her true feelings. I thought she was going to cry. It was absolutely heartbreaking, I feel so sorry for her.

Thingybob · 22/11/2018 03:58

Brilliant well done Stella, you are a brave and stunning woman. And Debbie thanks to you and your amazing family for appearing in the programme.

As for the TRAs? It's just unbelievable that that bunch of misfits feel they are qualified to challenge any of the adults at the meeting.

Milliepede · 22/11/2018 04:01

The TRAs were brilliant, they must have Peak Transed thousands of people by their chanting and appalling behaviour.

SignMeUp · 22/11/2018 05:17

When I went to register at ch4 they asked my gender!

Still waiting to watch here in the US..taking forever to load

I've been waiting for transmen in popular media. The thousands of girls and young women going down that road will bring the whole house of cards down

tsonlyme · 22/11/2018 05:40

Good programme, thank you Stella!

I was on the telly 😳 outside the Bristol meeting (briefly) and a couple of long enough to be clearly recognisable shots of me in the audience - I hope there’s no backlash from that, a couple of friends have recently voiced their other sided views of ‘hating the hate’ without critical thought. People who cannot be argued with so I stayed quiet, much to my shame.

That was the first time I’d see footage of the vitriol when they first stormed the building, crikey.

And I looked like shit so there’s that to worry about too 😂

Hidingtonothing · 22/11/2018 05:50

That footage from Bristol Shock The TRA's are so full of rage and hate, ironic when they're so sure we are the hateful ones. I think they will struggle to convince anyone not already immersed in their ideology that Stella is transphobic, the tone was too thoughtful (and hopefully thought provoking) for people to be taken in.

TheLurkingOne · 22/11/2018 06:51

Thanks for the Twitter links. They are frothing aren't they.

Can anyone tell me is the Twitter poster who says literally hundreds of trans people have been decapitated etc speaking sense? I'm sure I read on here that those were skewed and overly dramatised statistics.

StarsAndWater · 22/11/2018 06:53

Yes, that Jam Jar footage was really illuminating.

And the sex divide was so clear too. Mostly women inside, mostly men outside, with men trying to physically stop women from entering, repeatedly calling the women cunts and saying 'you have no rights' when a woman mentions women's rights.

It doesn't get much clearer than that.

deepwatersolo · 22/11/2018 07:06

Cole, who was featured, has made a youtube clip (Channel4 Documentary - my Response). Very grounded, very positive, very happy that the documentary can start a debate.

Quite a marked contrast to the Twitter meltdown going down in Woketopia.

KatVonGulag · 22/11/2018 07:07

Guess who thinks we are "Nazis"

It's India "let that penetrate" Willoughby

KatVonGulag · 22/11/2018 07:17

Stella has protected her tweets because she knows she is wrong. Says the people who refused to participate and ran around calling people Nazis.

KatVonGulag · 22/11/2018 07:19

You saw the Tran's rights activists...
Shouting
Screaming
Etc

But did you know it could all have been a set up? Were the hissing brats really te*fs in disguise?

India isn't even logically consistent here. GenderCritical is not the same as BlackCritical or AsianCritical on many levels, most obviously because only a proportion of people are black or asian, but everybody has a gender (even though some of uns do not like and are critical of what society projects onto us via gender, just because of our biology).

SaskiaRembrandtWasFramed · 22/11/2018 07:39

I would say that suggesting being Asian or Black critical is logically inconsistent because Asian and Black people are live human beings, unlike gender which is a socially constructed stereotype which varies according to time and place. India's analogy would only work if they were referring to stereotypes of Asian or Black culture or behaviours.

Also, the constant use of the word Nazi in this context is dismissive of the victims of actual Nazis. India, in case you're reading (I've heard you like to lurk in these parts), someone disagreeing with you is not equivalent to mass murder on an industrial scale.

Catsize · 22/11/2018 07:50

Like Stella, had my partner been born today, she'd have gone down the transition route too. She is very glad she didn't.

OrchidInTheSun · 22/11/2018 07:54

Lurking - it's total hogwash. And that's one of the reasons you can't debate with people like this - how can you argue with people who resort to lies and hyperbole when challenged (and yes Dawn Butler, I'm looking at you)?

R0wantrees · 22/11/2018 07:57

India isn't even logically consistent here

No and this is often the case with IW and other influential TRAs.

If people would just pause and feel able to question the illogical pronouncements that are made so frequently.

R0wantrees · 22/11/2018 08:05

Christine Hart's comment is bizarre.

The protest by Bristol TRAs was comprable to WPUK's Oxford event.
The groups in Bristol were open about their intentions to prevent discussion.

There were two camera crews there, one with Munroe Bergdorf (for the documentary 'What Makes A Woman?) and another from Channel 4 (now known to be with Stella O Mally)

There is a recording of the live feed from Jam Jar 'We Need To Talk About Sex' event:
