Also most people including most of us here support trans equality, but also don't think people can really change sex or that men should use women's services/spaces.
Absolutely. Nobody really believes that you can change sex, and those that do believe it tie it to GRS.

Datun · 17/10/2018 11:47

It's clever as there is no mention of what they really want.

Get the public sympathetic first, then slowly bring in the changes they want.

It's too late. The initial equalities report is now being seen as fatally flawed.

Newspapers know, MPs know, interest groups know.

If someone completes the one click Stonewall consultation in good faith and then finds out what they have added their name to, their fury will be monumental.

Exactly this. I would have done it myself a few years ago, not knowing.

BertBox · 17/10/2018 11:51

On that Twitter #, lots of the aforementioned companies are tweeting their support. People could contact them through that? ( though if you tweet on their timeline you may get a load of abuse, so be aware of that )

I can’t use my twitter as its linked to my work, but I’m sad to see Barnardo’s in particular aligned with Mermaids.

RiverTam · 17/10/2018 11:53

Yes, Javed Khan, CEO of Barnardo's, is top of my list to send Turph's list of questions to (though having email issues so can't do so till this evening, dammit!).

Bonions · 17/10/2018 11:53

Some CEO email addresses

Channel 4 - Alex Mahon [email protected]
Amnesty International - Salil Shetty (secretary General) [email protected]
ASOS - Nick Beighton [email protected]
AVIVA - Mark Wilson [email protected]
Barclays - Mr Jes Staley [email protected]
Ebay - Rob Hattrell (Managing Director) [email protected]
IBM - Bill Kelleher [email protected]
ITV - Carolyn McCall [email protected]
Lloyds Banking Group - Antonio Horta-Osorio antonio.osorio:lloydsbanking.com
Tesco - Dave Lewis [email protected]

There are more companies but ran out of time to find them all. This site is useful but you can only access a few before a paywall goes up:

Turph · 17/10/2018 11:55

Bonions that's really helpful thanks

RiverTam · 17/10/2018 11:56

Barnado's - [email protected]

Waspnest · 17/10/2018 12:05

Bigotedwoman I agree, I think that is what most people will do - it's what I would have done before I became aware of the self-ID issues. actually I probably wouldn't have noticed either of the ads

See I'm not sure it is that clever because
a) as above, the majority of readers won't even notice it
b) those who support Stonewall already know the issues and will have already filled in the consultation using their guidance
c) when drawn to the attention of those of us who are GC, we will actually hold those companies putting their name to it to account which actually draws attention to the self ID problems.

That's what's (almost) funny about this battle(?). Very few people will have noticed the 'Woman' billboard in Liverpool until some TRAs complained about it and then it was reported in the news and people started saying WTF? about self ID. I think the word is getting out largely because of massive own goals by TRAs. Last week for the first time ever a friend on FB mentioned the GRA consultation with a link to the WPUK site and she got a lot of support and likes.

Penny1976 · 17/10/2018 12:09

Interestingly I saw a mocked up version of the adult human female poster about the school secretary on my facebook today. Being shared and laughed about by mums.

That's what's (almost) funny about this battle(?).

Exactly. The reason they have made that advert so meaningless it's because they can't draw attention to what they actually want.

That's the rub. That will always be the rub. And that's why this won't work. Because what they want is wrong.

All you have to do is listen.

AngryAttackKittens · 17/10/2018 12:14

It's like an ad saying "Buy Food" that can't tell you which kind of food precisely it wants you to buy because the people paying for it know nobody wants what they're selling.

FlowersAndHerts · 17/10/2018 12:21

Re this point earlier (I'm a bit late to the thread!)
Liberty is free to choose to support whatever campaign it wishes.
Yes, do you remember when the National Council for Civil Liberties supported PIE?

Redkeyboard · 17/10/2018 12:33

Yes, do you remember when the National Council for Civil Liberties supported PIE?

Yep.

IKeepFlouncing · 17/10/2018 12:41

Action for children 🤔 they took over our Sure Start Centre, promised to continue with some of services that was life line to many.

They stopped using sure start centre bunged a few groups over to Library, lots of staff lost jobs.

Guess where action for children are now? Fuck knows. Doesn’t really matter as Library has got temp hatitus on closure.

transdimensional · 17/10/2018 12:46

The point about Liberty/PIE is a valid one to bear in mind because there's a tendency by many to think that the latest "rights" agenda is part of the march of progress and will be vindicated in time (in the same way that gay rights were once controversial). But sometimes activists can go down blind alleys. Just because something is the cause of the moment doesn't in itself mean it will be proved right.

StormyDaniels · 17/10/2018 12:51

Ok I'll confess when someone first mentioned Liberty I didn't check the picture on the advert and I thought they meant the department store and I was a bit Confused
Blush

Floisme · 17/10/2018 12:56

Wasn’t the chief exec of Action for Children formerly with the Girl Guides?

EverardDigby · 17/10/2018 13:05

Stormy me too, I thought maybe they're being supportive because there's a new trans craze for tana lawn fabrics!

TheFemaleGaze · 17/10/2018 13:06

Talk about disingenous.

If you click that link this is what it says on the Stonewall site:

Speak up for trans rights and help reform the Gender Recognition Act
The UK Government is consulting on vital new rights for trans (including non-binary) and intersex people. This could be a huge step forward for trans equality. It is crucial that the Government sees trans people and allies coming out in support.

Failure to secure these reforms would not just hold back trans people's rights, it would represent a major setback in our collective efforts to secure LGBT rights and equality.

That's why we need you to come out in support, get your friends, family and networks involved, and show that people across Britain support trans people’s right to be accepted and live free from hate.

Not a single mention of Self ID. Not a sausage. Just a load of guff about trans equality.

They know that self ID is the world's worst idea. They know it.

Elephantinacravat · 17/10/2018 13:15

How the fuck is allowing self id going to help trans people live a life 'free from hate'?

HOW?

Arrgghhhhh!!!

AbsintheFriends · 17/10/2018 13:17

Late catching up on thread so far. So interested in RedToothBrush's analysis, as always. I totally agree, and think that it shows they're rattled. It's like the abusive partner putting on a loving show for the children as he hands them sweeties, while giving his wife that look over their heads. It's a look that says, 'see - I'm a good person. You're the one at fault for making me hit you.'

Datun · 17/10/2018 13:33

Elephantinacravat

This just shows what happens when you let narcissists write your copy.

Everywhere in mainstream media people are talking about Karen White and about how frightened MPs are to talk.

Dot connecting is happening all over the place. They are too late. People are beginning to know what's going on. They're not going to blindly accept this. Stonewall are treating the general public like idiots. A public who is already fed up with having this 'shoved down their throat' (a well worn phrase with all the BTL comments).

Stonewall are making themselves look like lying, deceitful manipulators.

And although secondary, that also pisses me off more than I can say. Why are people who are so one-dimensional, inexperienced and dim, being given these positions of influence?
