Transwoman takes women's world record

Rachel McKinnon has tweeted that Rachel has taken the women's 200m indoor cycling world record.

It makes me so angry for the women who have trained so hard to have to compete against male bodied athletes.

UCI Masters Track Cycling World Championships in Manchester in October 2019 I notice. Date for your diaries everyone?

theOtherPamAyres · 14/10/2018 21:31

McKinnon has deleted the victory photo, where they stood shoulders and head above the small slight women that were cheated. (It's not the photo shown above - it's another one and far more shocking). Has had to block about a thousand people who didn't say how stunning and brave the good Dr McKinnon was.

OvaHere · 14/10/2018 21:39

Good. I'm glad so many said how they felt. An abhorrent cheater who is anything but stunning and brave.

LemonJello · 14/10/2018 21:41

I’d be interested to see that pic

CaptainKirkssparetupee · 14/10/2018 23:18

Welcome to the future

MaverickSnoopy · 15/10/2018 06:13

Thanks to those of you who explained. I've been worried about self id for a while and have become quite passionate/stressed about it. I've read quite a bit and spoken to a few people/sharing links etc but am nowhere near as fluent and informed as some of the people on this board, so when I read the comment that I did, it wasn't that I doubted my beliefs, I just wanted to know more about the full picture (because I knew it wouldn't be that cut and dry). It's clear to see the physical differences but when "they" say they aren't there...I couldn't help but wonder why. It's basically lies and denial isn't it. It's really not a wonder that so many people (who aren't asking questions) take it at face value and don't see a problem with it - because so many people simply believe what they read.

MoltenLasagne · 15/10/2018 09:25

Nutrition and weight expectations for children starts to be significantly differentiated by sex around 7-8 years old. So the claim that reducing testosterone creates a level playing field after going through full male puberty is absolute crap and the IOC (who set Olympic rules) know it.

They also know that it's complete bullshit to set the testosterone limit at 10nmol/L when it's a level that has literally never occurred within female athletes. In fact, according to the NHS, men would not be treated for low testosterone unless they naturally had

AspieAndProud · 15/10/2018 10:02

Question. She says that she has taken drugs which has reduced her testosterone and which put her on a level playing field with women. What's this about?

If this actually worked third rate male athletes would transition into third rate female athletes, not first class athletes.

kesstrel · 15/10/2018 10:19

MaverickSnoopy I think (someone please correct me if I'm wrong) that the reason testosterone levels are thought of by many people as the key difference between men and women in sport is because there used to be a lot of publicity about female athletes doping themselves with testosterone to gain a 'male' advantage.

Obviously bone density, etc, was not publicised as important differences because there is no way of altering that, so no newsworthy "issue".

So when people see "lowered testosterone" they use backwards-logic (there's actually a name for this psychological tendency, I think) , to think "no longer male". And trans rights activists take advantage of that.

Charliethefeminist · 15/10/2018 10:20

The drugs can't wind back time and undo the effect testosterone had on the body years ago - musculature, lung capacity, skeletal development.

kesstrel · 15/10/2018 10:20

This tweet and its replies shows interesting further developments:

Katie Hopkins posted about this on Twitter. Her thread has 5,000 likes and 1,000 comments.

I don't like KH, but I can't deny that she is getting a huge response .

OvaHere · 15/10/2018 13:28

The KH thread is depressing though. Yes nobody agrees it's right but a huge amount are blaming women and feminists for bringing this on themselves. "Funny that no feminists are speaking out on this" is a common comment. Most of the population seemingly has no idea how hard we have been fighting back.

Lazypoolday · 15/10/2018 14:46

After looking at mckinnons Instagram, it's obvious that this person has bulked up considerably in the past couple of years, when they first appeared in women's cycling they were a lot skinnier. I wonder was that a calcuated move? There's no way a female could have thigh muscles like that
without cheating

whatsthecomingoverthehill · 15/10/2018 15:01

The people who advocate for transgender people in sport consistently state that "science has proved" that they do not have an advantage. Has anyone seen what the basis for this is?

FermatsTheorem · 15/10/2018 15:12

If this actually worked third rate male athletes would transition into third rate female athletes, not first class athletes.

Yes - this seems to happen with suspicious regularity. Bloke who is a distinct also-ran in men's sport (Fallon Fox, Laurel Hubbard) transitions, usually at an age (mid thirties onwards) at which most athletes of either sex are retiring, and suddenly becomes world-beating athlete.

Or peforms way beyond what you'd expect for someone in their age-group (e.g. Gabrielle Ludwig, 50-something taking a women's college basket ball place, what with being head and shoulders taller than their team-mates, or that person in Australia in their sixties playing women's cricket).

But no, get your testosterone bouncing along that 10 nmol/litre line and you're good to go. (As pointed out upthread, it's only below 8 nmol/litre that men would get treatment for "low testosterone", and women typically have testosterone of about 1.5 nmol/litre, 2.5 if they have PCOS - the 10 nmol/litre limit is five standard deviations away from the female mean).

Gosh. I could not possibly tell which is the man in that photograph.

whatsthecomingoverthehill · 15/10/2018 15:30

FermatsTheorem, Rachel said on twitter that "I'm still forced to have an unhealthily low endogenous testosterone value..it's virtually undetectable it's so low...way below the average for women". Is this just more lies?

FermatsTheorem · 15/10/2018 15:37

IIRC, Rachel has at least had complete surgery including an orchiectomy which means their testosterone is pushing zero - so Rachel is campaigning to have the limits on testosterone lifted completely, so they can take supplements.

There was a newspaper article where they discussed this with another transwoman (Joanna Harper, the biochemist who advises the IOC). Harper favours testosterone limits, but argues that all the other physiological differences are just one of those random things, like the way 5'2" me was never going to make it as a serious rower. McKinnon argues that testosterone limits are unfair.

I think McKinnon is living, visible proof that testosterone isn't the whole story, myself.
